Benign Nasal Mass as a Delayed Complication of Barbed Thread Rhinoplasty.

Barbed thread rhinoplasty for nasal tip projection, dorsal length elongation, and nostril correction is usually performed at private clinics. The procedure is minimally invasive and does not cause permanent external scarring, which is a common challenge in rhinoplasty. Limited studies have described the complications of this procedure, with no reports on its late complications. A patient presented to the authors' clinic with a nasal septal mass, which had developed 3 months before the visit. She had undergone rhinoplasty 10 years prior. During excisional biopsy, the authors found barbed thread

SUZYTM forceps facilitate nasogastric tube insertion under McGRATHTM MAC videolaryngoscopic guidance: A randomized, controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Nasogastric tubes can be easily inserted in patients under general anesthesia. However, for difficult cases, insertion techniques that can be used in routine clinical practice are limited. SUZY forceps are designed for the removal of pharyngolaryngeal foreign bodies under guidance of a McGrath videolaryngoscope. We hypothesized that using SUZY forceps under McGrath videolaryngoscopic guidance may facilitate nasogastric tube insertion and tested this in a randomized controlled trial. METHODS: Adult patients who underwent gastrointestinal or hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery were ran

Interventional therapy via flexible bronchoscopy in the management of foreign body-related occlusive endobronchial granulation tissue formation in children.

BACKGROUND: Occlusive granulation tissue formation, as one of the most common sequelae of chronic foreign body aspiration, can cause tracheobronchial obstruction and delayed fixed airway stenosis necessitating interventions. The aim of this study was to explore the clinical efficacy and safety of interventional therapy via flexible bronchoscopy for treatment of granulation tissue related airway obstruction secondary to foreign body aspiration in children. METHOD: Patients with long-term foreign body related granulation tissue were treated with flexible bronchoscopy therapeutic modalities, inc

A child with a foreign body in bronchus misdiagnosed as asthma.

Foreign body ingestion should be considered as an important differential in a child with difficult asthma. We report an 11-year-old male child with foreign body aspiration who initially was diagnosed and treated as difficult asthma. Later on, he was diagnosed to have a foreign body in the right bronchus, which was successfully removed by flexible bronchoscopy.

Aural and nasal foreign bodies in children - Epidemiology and correlation with hyperkinetic disorders, developmental disorders and congenital malformations.

OBJECTIVES: Foreign body incorporation in children is often a serious situation. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) could be a risk factor for self-insertion of foreign bodies. Large cohort analyses are missing. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of patients' records from a health insurance company representing 2.19% of the German population and 1.75% of German children and adolescents. According to the International Classification of Diseases, children in the age range between 1 and 18 years have been screened for foreign bodies in ear, nasal sinus and nostrils as well a

Traumatic transnasal penetrating injury with cerebral spinal fluid leak.

CSF leak in penetrating skull base injury is relatively rare compared to close head injury involving skull base fracture. We report a 5-year-old boy presented with epistaxis and impacted pencil into the left nostril. The child was hemodynamically stable without any neurological deficit. Intraoperatively, there was a nasal septal defect posteriorly with anterior skull base fracture associated with CSF leak. The pencil was removed from the left nostril and the CSF leak was repaired using harvested abdominal fat under the same setting. Computed Tomography (CT) of the brain showed right cribriform

Management of an Unusual Intranasal Foreign Body Abutting the Cribriform Plate: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

A 35-year-old man with history of schizophrenia presented 3 weeks after placing a screw in his right nostril. Initial imaging showed a screw in the right ethmoid sinus with the tip penetrating the right cribriform plate. On exam, the patient was hemodynamically stable with purulent drainage in the right nasal cavity but no visible foreign body. While most nasal foreign bodies occur in children and are generally removed at the bedside, intranasal foreign bodies in adults tend to require further assessment. The foreign body in this case was concerning for skull base involvement and the patient w

A nose out of joint: first reported case of prison-acquired marijuana-based rhinolith.

Rhinoliths are calcareous concretions of the nasal cavity formed around a nidus that may be endogenous (eg, dislodged tooth) or an exogenous foreign body (eg, plastic bead inserted by a child). Rhinoliths are often found incidentally on endoscopy or imaging to assess for other pathologies. The incidence is estimated to be 1 in 10 000 of all otolaryngology outpatient presentations, but this is likely to be an underestimate due to the often asymptomatic nature of this condition. We describe the unique case of a rhinolith that developed from a marijuana-filled balloon that the patient attempted t

Rhinomyiasis by Oestrus ovis in a tourist returning from Corsica.

In the Mediterranean basin, one of the most important agents of myiasis is Oestrus ovis Linnaeus 1758 (Diptera, Oestridae). Herein, we report a rare case of nasal myiasis with a secondary infection complication in a patient from northern Italy who had been visiting Corsica. A healthy, 39-year-old Italian woman spent 2 weeks of vacation in Corsica in June 2018. During her stay, she suddenly felt a foreign body inside her nose, followed by cough, pain, burning at the pharyngeal level, cephalalgia, and nasal congestion with secretions from the nostrils. The clinical examination showed a hyperemic

A Case of Unexpected Clinostomum complanatum Infection Initially Presenting as Foreign Body in Pharynx.

A 46-year old man visited our outpatient clinic with complaint of foreign body sensation in throat after consuming raw freshwater fish 5 days ago. Laryngoscopic examination revealed a motile worm attached on posterior pharyngeal wall. The worm was removed using biopsy forceps under transnasal endoscopy and evidently identified as Clinostomum complanatum after microscopic examination. Patient's subjective foreign body sensation of throat and hyperemia of laryngeal mucosa remained for approximately 2 weeks post-removal, which were eventually resolved after administration of non-steroidal anti-in

Retained Foreign Body in the Nasal Cavity After Oral Maxillofacial Surgery.

Retained foreign bodies sometimes occur in various surgical procedures and can lead to severe complications. Foreign bodies in the oral and maxillofacial region are not rare because of the use of many small items and the natural communication with the outside environment in some areas. We experienced a case of foreign body in the nasal cavity, which was discovered 1 year later at a second operation for hardware removal after maxillofacial surgery. A small, soft material is usually placed between the nasal endotracheal tube and nostril to avoid nasal pressure ulcer at the ala of nose after prol

Microbial Isolates from Vegetable Foreign Bodies Inhaled by Dogs.

Grass-seed inhalation is a common problem in canine patients, in particular during summer months, migrating in upper and lower respiratory tract. Grass awns can harbor bacteria and fungi, causing grass seeds foreign body-related disease (GSFBD). Aim of this study was to investigate the aerobic microbial flora isolated from grass awns extracted from 41 dogs with GSFBD and the antibiotic susceptibility of the isolated bacterial strains. Fifty-four grass awns were localized with diagnostic imaging tests and removed by endoscopy from respiratory tract. The most frequent localizations were in the l

Pattern Of Presentation Of Nasal Foreign Bodies, An Experience With 155 Patients.

BACKGROUND: Children commonly present to outpatient department with foreign bodies in the nose. Sometimes the history is straightforward but not infrequently presentation is with a foul-smelling unilateral discharge and obstruction. Most of the foreign bodies are inert and do not cause any local tissue reaction but some of these can cause serious complications. The frequency of the different types of foreign bodies is not known in our setup. Our study aims to determine the types and frequencies of different foreign bodies in our catchment area so as to make the attending surgeon aware of the d

Pulmonary influenza A virus infection leads to suppression of the innate immune response to dermal injury.

The innate immune system is responsible for many important functions in the body including responding to infection, clearing cancerous cells, healing wounds, and removing foreign substances. Although many of these functions happen simultaneously in life, most laboratory studies of the innate immune response focus on one activity. How the innate immune system responds to concurrent insults in different parts of the body is not well understood. This study explores the impact of a lung infection on the cutaneous wound healing process. We used two complimentary models of injury: the excisional tai
