Nasal leech infestation causing persistent epistaxis.

Foreign bodies in the nasal cavity are commonly encountered as a cause of epistaxis; however, nasal leech infestation as a cause of unilateral persistent epistaxis is very rare. Examination of nasal cavity revealed fleshy material in the left nostril, which was identified as leech. The leech was removed with the help of an artery forceps following irrigation of the left nostril with normal saline and adopting wait-and-watch policy. In developing countries, leech infestation as a cause of epistaxis should be suspected in patients with lower socioeconomic status or in those living in rural areas

Incisor tooth in the nose: anecdotal sequel to dog bite in a 3-year-old child.

A 3-year-old male child presented to the casualty with history of unprovoked dog bite over the right lateral wall of nose. He was managed conservatively with antirabies prophylaxis and dressings. He presented after 3 months with a healed wound and the right upper central incisor projecting into the nostril. The Orthopantomogram showed a rotated temporary incisor with the roots of the permanent incisor placed normally. The tooth was extracted intranasally. Among the mutilating dog bite injuries referred to a plastic surgeon, this injury though thought provoking was also comical.

Traumatic displacement of maxillary permanent incisor into the nasal cavity.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper was to describe a case of unviable alveolar repositioning of an intruded tooth into the nasal cavity and to bring the subject of intrusive tooth injury among patients with dentoalveolar fractures to the attention of trauma surgeons. PATIENT: A 26-year-old male was involved in a car accident and crashed his mouth against the dashboard due to sudden deceleration. Intraoral examination revealed an anterior maxillary dentoalveolar fracture and absence of the central maxillary incisors, right lateral maxillary incisor, and left maxillary canine. Computed tomograp

The rhinolith-a possible differential diagnosis of a unilateral nasal obstruction.

Rhinoliths are mineralised foreign bodies in the nasal cavity that are a chance finding at anterior rhinoscopy. Undiscovered, they grow appreciably in size and can cause a foul-smelling nasal discharge and breathing problems. Giant nasal stones are now a very rare occurrence, since improved diagnostic techniques, such as endoscopic/microscopic rhinoscopy, now make it possible to identify foreign bodies at an early stage of development. We report the case of a 37-year-old patient who, at the age of 5-6 years, introduced a foreign body, probably a stone, into his right nasal cavity. On presentat

Snots and snuffles: rational approach to chronic feline upper respiratory syndromes.

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: While the most common cause of chronic upper respiratory disease signs in cats is viral disease, with subsequent, self-perpetuating inflammation, other, more discrete causes need to be ruled out. These include foreign bodies, bacterial or fungal infections, oral-dental diseases and neoplasia. Any factors contributing to alterations in the structure or function of the upper airways, including inflammation of any cause, will compromise normal function and predispose to chronic damage if the cat is unable to resolve the underlying factors. CLINICAL CHALLENGES: The chronic fe

Nasendoscopy for unusual nasal symptoms.

A 20-year-old woman who was fit and well presented with a history of left nasal blockage for 2 years. She was noted on anterior rhinoscopy to have nasal septal deviation towards the left. She was listed for septoplasty with the aim of relieving nasal obstruction. At operation she was found to have a mildly deviated septum to the left. There was also a rhinolith in the left nostril posterior to the deviated septum (figure 1). Following removal of the rhinolith, her nasal airway appeared adequate; hence, septoplasty was not performed. Postoperatively, the patient was pleased with the outcome. Wh

Maxillary sinusitis in patients ventilated for a severe head injury and with nostrils free of any foreign body.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to determine the frequency of maxillary sinusitis in the patients with traumatic head injury and nostrils free of any foreign body. In addition, the sensitivity and specificity of ultrasonography (US) for the detection of the presence of fluid in maxillary sinuses were evaluated. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty patients with severe traumatic head injury were included in the study. The patients who had displaced maxillary sinus fracture at the medial wall and naso-tracheal and/or naso-gastric tube were excluded. Paranasal computed tomography (CT) was performed along wit

[Foreign body which resembles concha bulloza in the middle meatus: a case report].

Diagnosis of foreign body in the nasal cavity may be difficult because it has a wide variety of presentations. Concha bullosa is defined as the pneumatization of the middle concha in various degrees. A 43-year-old female patient was admitted to our clinic with the complaint of breathing difficulty through her right nostril which had been going on for the last year. She had had some medical treatments previously in some different medical centers, there wasn't purulent discharge with unpleasant odour, bleeding and halitosis in the nose and there wasn't a history of a blow to the nose or a histor

[Accidents with foreign bodies in children under 15 years of age: epidemiological analysis of first aid services, hospitalizations, and deaths].

This study aims to analyze accidents involving foreign bodies among children less than 15 years of age residing in Londrina, Paraná State, Brazil, in terms of first aid, hospitalization, and death (2001). Data were obtained from general hospital records and the Municipal Mortality Database. A total of 434 accidents were analyzed, with a 3.7% hospitalization rate and 0.7% mortality. Boys predominated (53.7%), and the incidence rate was highest among children one to three years of age (7.2 per 1,000 children). Foreign body penetration in natural orifices (eyes, nostrils, and ears) accounted for

[Nasal cavity angiosarcoma: a case report and literature review].

Sarcomas constitute 5% of all of head and neck neoplasms. Angiosarcomas comprise 2% of all soft tissue tumors, 60% appear in skin and soft tissue, 50% in the head and neck and only 4% are present in the upper aerodigestive tract. We report a case of a 52 year old healthy woman with headache, weeping, foreign body sensation in the left nostril and epixtasis. The TAC identified a tumor in the left nostril that invaded the osseous lamina of the skull. The histopathologic diagnosis was angiosarcoma. We carried out a literature review and analysis from 1976 to 2004. Agiosarcomas of the upper aerodi

[Gastric foreign body. Rare complication of nasogastric tube placing].

The use of an uncuffed endotracheal tube for the placement of nasogastric tubes during surgery is not a procedure free of any risk. We report a rare case of gastric foreign body secondary to this procedure. A 67-year-old patient who had underwent a coronary bypass for a three vessels disease two years before complained of postprandial epigastralgia lasting for a few months. The investigations reported a gastric ulcer associated with a tubular gastric foreign body. The endoscopic extraction found an endotracheal tube. It is a common habit in our institution to use this method when placing this

A case of an inverted tooth in the nasal cavity.

We report a case of an inverted tooth in the nasal cavity. The patient was a 27-year-old man who attended our hospital in May 1998, complaining of left cheek-pain. There was nothing remarkable in his medical or family history. Fiberscopic (intranasal) and radiological examinations revealed a white foreign body in the left nasal cavity, within 2 cm of the left nostril. This foreign body was diagnosed as an inverted tooth. It was removed under general anesthesia and found to be 17 mm in length. Although the tooth showed a single root, it possessed two cusps and we deduced it to be a molar.

Air rifle injury with an entrance through the nose: a case report and review of the literature.

A case of attempted homicide is reported where a 31-year-old woman was shot in the left nostril with a pellet from an air rifle. The projectile channel reconstruction showed penetration of the nasal septum, the maxillary and sphenoid cavities and the dura mater, with the pellet finally lodging in the anterior cranial fossa between the sinus cavernosus and the internal carotid artery. The patient was finally discharged from hospital in a good physical condition without any neurological symptoms. Although the muzzle velocity of the air rifle was within the legal limits, the present case demonstr

Delayed removal of a fully intruded primary incisor through the nasal cavity: a case report.

Complete intrusion of a primary anterior tooth may initially be diagnosed as an avulsion injury. The importance of a correct first clinical and radiological examination of a young patient who has sustained trauma to the anterior primary teeth is stressed in this article. This issue is illustrated by a case presentation where a 3-year-old girl had a delayed treatment of 5 days after a primary incisor was fully impacted by a fall trauma into the nasal cavity. This was due to an incomprehensible clinical and radiological examination by the first examining dentist. The impacted tooth was later rem

Transnasal bamboo foreign body lodged in the sphenoid sinus.

Transnasal sphenoid sinus foreign body is a rare condition. We report a very rare case of transnasal bamboo foreign body lodged in the sphenoid sinus without damages to the orbital wall or skull base. A 69-year-old man fell down onto a bamboo stick, which snapped after penetrating his face through the right nostril. CT demonstrated that the bamboo stick stuck into the middle meatus, penetrated the ethmoid sinus just medial to the lamina papyracea and reached to the sphenoid sinus. No abnormal findings were detected in the orbit or skull base. The foreign body was removed from the nasal cavity

Transnasal penetrating brain injury with a ball-pen.

We report a case of a 44-year-old man with 1 day's history of epistaxis. He was an in-patient in a psychiatric ward with a history of depression. He had CSF rhinorrhoea, was confused and had no focal neurological deficits. A full length pencil was removed from his left nostril in the emergency department. CT of the brain revealed a tract, but also suggested another foreign body in the inter-hemispheric space. He had a para-sagittal craniotomy and a 14 cm ball-point pen was found lying between the two cerebral hemispheres. This was removed and the patient made an uneventful recovery. This is th
