Radiopaque pediatric oxygen absorber ingestion and the hidden risks of active packaging.

We report the case of a 5-year-old girl who presented to the emergency department after accidental ingestion of the contents of an oxygen absorber sachet found in packaged food. Abdominal radiography demonstrated multiple fine, diffusely distributed radiopaque granules throughout the stomach and small bowel, producing a distinctive sandstorm-like appearance. The ingested material was confirmed to be iron powder mixed with sodium chloride, a compound commonly used in active food packaging with low gastrointestinal bioavailability. The patient exhibited no symptoms during the observation period

Gastrointestinal Phytobezoars in Small Animals: A Retrospective Study of 18 Cases.

A phytobezoar is a compact mass formed by the accumulation of indigestible food fibers (such as cellulose and lignin) within the stomach and/or intestine. To date, only limited reports describe the clinical management and diagnostic approach to gastrointestinal phytobezoars (GIPs) in dogs and cats. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical features and diagnostic findings obtained through imaging and instrumental investigations in canine and feline cases with GIPs. Medical records of 25 animals diagnosed with GIPs were reviewed, and data on signalment, clinical signs, imaging findings

A Magnetic Hazard: A Case of Multiple Foreign Body Ingestion in a Two-year-old Child.

Magnetic foreign body ingestion is an increasingly recognized hazard in young children and poses a significant risk for severe gastrointestinal injury, particularly when multiple magnets are swallowed. Such cases can result in pressure necrosis, perforation, fistula formation, and bowel obstruction. We report the case of a 2-year-old girl who presented with a 3-4-day history of abdominal pain and vomiting. Imaging studies demonstrated multiple foreign bodies within the ileum, and the child was initially managed conservatively. Due to persistent symptoms and imaging findings, surgical explorati

A case report: an unusual case of multiple jejunal foreign bodies.

BACKGROUND: Enterolithiasis is an uncommon condition that can be hard to identify its underlying cause. Jejunal diverticula are also rare (with an incidence of less than 5%) and may be associated with enterolithiasis. It is essential to identify and address the cause of enterolithiasis to prevent recurrence. We herein report typical findings and a course of treatment of true primary enterolithiasis and a jejunal diverticulum, hoping to offer helpful information for clinicians. CASE PRESENTATION: In this case, a 14-year-old female patient demonstrated a one-year history of intermittent abdomina

An unusual cause of acute small bowel obstruction in a child: multiple trichobezoars diagnosed on CT.

We report a case of three bezoars identified on computed tomography (CT) in a paediatric patient presenting with acute small bowel obstruction. The bezoars were surgically removed via laparotomy with gastrotomy and enterotomy, confirming their classification as trichobezoars. A trichobezoar is a mass of undigested hair in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). This case report demonstrates the use of CT in the diagnosis of this extremely rare case.

Transmural Ileal Fibroplasia Causing Mechanical Obstruction in a Dog: Surgical Management, Histopathology, and Molecular Findings.

Small bowel obstruction (SBO) in dogs is most commonly caused by foreign bodies or neoplasia; however, SBO secondary to transmural fibroplasia remains a rare clinical complication of canine chronic enteropathy. This report describes the complex case of mechanical SBO caused by transmural ileal fibroplasia and inflammation at the ileocolic junction in a 9-year-old mixed-breed dog with concomitant hyperadrenocorticism (HAC). The primary presentation involved chronic severe weight loss and intermittent anorexia, contrasting with the acute presentation typical of most SBO cases. Imaging studies re

Small bowel perforation by ingested fish bone in a post-gastric bypass patient: a case report.

Gastric bypass effectively treats morbid obesity but may cause complications like anastomotic strictures and marginal ulceration. Bowel perforation from foreign body ingestion is rare. A 49-year-old woman with previous gastric bypass presented with acute abdominal pain. A fish bone perforated her small intestine, causing an acute abdomen. Emergency laparotomy was performed, successfully repairing all perforations. Patients with gastric bypass may have anatomical changes increasing their risk of foreign body-induced perforation. Clinicians should consider this possibility when assessing sudden

Occult fish bone ingestion inducing cross-site injury: a rare case report of gastric bleeding and jejunal perforation.

BACKGROUND: Fish bone ingestion is a common clinical problem. However, occult ingestion causing concurrent gastric bleeding and jejunal perforation is extremely rare and easily misdiagnosed. CASE PRESENTATION: A 72-year-old male presented with upper abdominal pain and hematemesis with no clear history of foreign body ingestion. Abdominal CT revealed a high-density shadow in the stomach, localized gas-fluid accumulation in the small intestine, and minimal surrounding exudation. Emergency gastroscopy failed to identify the source of bleeding. The patient subsequently developed peritonitis, and

The role of enteroscopy in the diagnosis and interventional management of small intestine diseases.

Evaluation of the small intestine is technically difficult because of its length and anatomy. Capsule endoscopy and device-assisted enteroscopy (DAE) have expanded diagnostic and therapeutic options in recent years. This narrative review summarizes the current indications, therapeutic procedures, safety, and role of enteroscopy compared with other small bowel imaging methods. A literature search was performed in the MEDLINE database covering publications from February 2001 to February 2025, using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The main indications include small intestinal bleedin

Small bowel obstruction induced by migrated sacropexy mesh: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a frequent cause of surgical emergency, most commonly due to adhesions, hernias, or tumors. Mesh-related SBO following laparoscopic sacropexy is an exceptionally rare complication, often presenting years after the initial procedure and difficult to diagnose preoperatively. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 69-year-old Caucasian woman with a history of laparoscopic sacropexy for cystocele repair using mesh eight years prior, presenting with abdominal pain, bilious vomiting, and distension. Laboratory tests revealed leukocytosis and elevated inflammat

Delayed rupture of right external iliac artery pseudoaneurysm after removal of foreign body from small intestine: a case report.

Small bowel foreign bodies in adults are rare, and secondary pseudoaneurysm are even rarer. We report a case of a right external iliac artery pseudoaneurysm that occurred one month after removal of a small bowel foreign body. A woman presented with bleeding from a pelvic drainage tube one month after open surgery for small bowel foreign body removal. Preoperative computed tomography (CT) had clearly demonstrated the foreign body in the right pelvic intestine, adjacent to the right external iliac artery. Contrast-enhanced CT at the time of the bleeding showed pelvic hemoperitoneum but did not c
