INTRODUCTION: Fish bone ingestion is common but rarely causes complications such as abdominal wall abscesses, which can mimic malignancies such as sarcomas on imaging. Abscesses require drainage and antibiotics, while sarcomas need wide excision. Therefore, the differentiation between abscesses and sarcomas is important and often requires multidisciplinary involvement.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old woman presented with anorexia and a painful abdominal mass. Laboratory tests showed inflammation but normal tumor marker concentrations. The abdominal wall mass was hard and poorly mobile. Ultra

INTRODUCTION: A bezoar is a mass of undigested or partially digested material in the gastrointestinal tract, with trichobezoar being the second most common type. It is primarily composed of hair and can lead to complications such as bowel obstruction, ulceration, perforation, and intussusception. Early diagnosis is challenging due to vague symptoms, making it critical to have a high index of suspicion. The inclusion of sanitary pad within the trichobezoar makes this case unique.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 26-year-old Ugandan female presented with features of complete bowel obstruction. Contrast Enh

Management of gastrointestinal perforation in patients with vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (vEDS) is clinically challenging. A male in his 40s with vEDS presented with right lower abdominal pain. Computed tomography revealed a foreign body in the ileum with bowel perforation. A detailed inquiry revealed that he had consumed codfish six days prior. Based on these findings, he was diagnosed with a small bowel perforation caused by a fish bone. Emergency laparotomy was performed and intraoperative findings showed a fish bone in the ileum penetrating the mesentery. We resected ~5 cm of the small

BACKGROUND Meckel diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract. It results from incomplete obliteration of the vitelline duct, leading to the formation of a true diverticulum of the small intestine, and is often clinically silent. However, complications can occur, including gastrointestinal bleeding, bowel obstruction, Meckel's diverticulitis, or perforation. CASE REPORT We present the case of a 62-year-old male patient in good health, with no prior history of surgery, who presented with abdominal pain in the right iliac fossa and elevated C-reactive protein

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine whether Ginkgo biloba special extract EGb 761 amplifies the known effects of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) on platelet aggregation, bleeding time or other coagulation parameters in healthy subjects.
METHODS: In a double-blind, double-dummy procedure, 50 healthy male subjects (20-44 years) were randomly allocated in equal numbers to one of two possible treatment sequences, i.e. ASA followed by ASA + EGb 761 or ASA + EGb 761 followed by ASA. Each treatment lasted 7 days; the washout period between treatments was 3 weeks. Study medication was taken

BACKGROUND: Traditional sutures often fail to meet the complex demands of wound closure across diverse anatomical environments. This study introduces a novel drug-eluting, multiscene absorbable biological suture derived from decellularized fish swim bladder, designed to address limitations in mechanical performance, pH resistance, and foreign body reactions.
METHODS: Swim bladders were decellularized, microdissected into 0.3-mm strips, and functionalized with rapamycin (RAPA) or necrostatin-1 (NEC-1) via hyaluronic acid/polyvinyl alcohol coatings. Sutures were evaluated for cytotoxicity [huma

Toothpick ingestion is an uncommon condition. It has been reported that an estimated incidence of 3.6 toothpick related injuries per 100,000 people per year. However, the incidence of toothpick-related gastrointestinal tract perforation is as high as 80%, with small bowel perforation accounting for 18% of cases. Common symptoms associated with toothpick ingestion include abdominal pain, fever, nausea, diarrhea, and constipation. However, it may lead to peritonitis, abscesses, and sepsis in severe cases. The diagnosis of toothpick ingestion is difficult. Only a minority (12%) of patients rememb

BACKGROUND: Ingestion of thermometers is a very rare occurrence and associated with penetrations of hollow organs. An event decades ago can lead to the development of fistulas.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 62-year-old male who swallowed multiple thermometers with a length of up to 22 cm over a period of 40 years. Diagnostic imaging presented a retroperitoneal abscess due to a duodenal perforation of the longest thermometer as well as multiple other thermometers stuck in the small intestine. After all thermometers were removed and the abscess drained, the patient showed a clinical

BACKGROUND: Foreign body ingestion in adults is commonly encountered in clinical practice. The therapeutic approach of whether to follow-up or extract is often controversial.
AIM: We aimed to explore predictors for spontaneous passage of ingested foreign bodies by focusing on foreign body type, length, and location of impaction.
METHODS: We performed a 12-year retrospective single-center study. Logistic regression analysis was done to identify predictors of spontaneous passage.
RESULTS: Overall, 365 patients with foreign body ingestion were included. The rate of spontaneous passage was 53.7

Ingestion of foreign bodies is very common in clinical practice. However, gastrointestinal perforation caused by a foreign body is rare, as most foreign bodies can pass the alimentary tract spontaneously or be removed endoscopically. Ingesting a foreign body causes gastrointestinal tract perforation in less than 1% of cases that require surgery. In the past, the literature about gastrointestinal tract perforation caused by foreign bodies had been widely reported worldwide. However, the case of foreign bodies causing gastrointestinal perforation without significant abdominal infection was rarel

A man in his 60s with a virgin abdomen presented with sudden-onset generalised abdominal pain and fevers. The night prior, he snacked on supermarket purchased dehydrated apples. CT abdomen and pelvis revealed small bowel obstruction (SBO) to the mid ileum and small amount of free fluid within the pelvis. The patient underwent emergency exploratory laparotomy. High-grade SBO was identified, caused by large obstructing phytobezoars, with three further proximal large phytobezoars identified. All four phytobezoars were extracted and found to be rehydrated pieces of dehydrated apple that had increa

Acute purulent enteritis is uncommon, which occasionally occurs in association with mechanical injuries from foreign bodies of helminth parasites and the contaminated food, leading to bacterial invasion. Herein we report a case of acute purulent enteritis after appendectomy. A 44-year-old male was diagnosed with right lower abdominal pain and vomiting. Acute appendicitis was diagnosed, and an open appendectomy was performed. Postoperatively, the patient developed symptoms of small intestine obstruction. A laparotomy revealed necrosis of the small intestine, and resection was performed. Patholo

BACKGROUND: Trichobezoar is an extremely rare condition characterized by a foreign body in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) among children. The foreign body may exist in the digestive tract for several years, and it becomes evident if complications develop. The current study aimed to present 21 cases of GIT trichobezoars.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of children who were diagnosed with trichobezoars between August 2012 and December 2022. Patient demographics, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and therapy were collected and analyzed.Twenty-one patients had GIT trichobezoars. Data were colle

Small intestinal obstruction in rabbits, although demonstrated to be common, is still poorly characterized. The objective of this study was to report features of small intestinal obstruction caused by trichobezoars in rabbits upon CT and their clinical outcomes. Rabbits with a diagnosis of intestinal obstruction that underwent CT scanning were included in this study. From each CT scan, obstruction location, appearance, Hounsfield units, size (mm), volume (mm3), distance from the stomach, and diameter of the small intestine proximal and distal to it, were extracted. Nine rabbits were included i

BACKGROUND Unintentional medication-blister ingestion is rare but frequently leads to intestinal perforation. The diagnosis of intestinal perforation following blister ingestion is often delayed because of an unreliable history and nonspecific clinical presentation. The purpose of this case report is to raise awareness about a rare but difficult diagnosis and its importance in avoiding potentially fatal events. CASE REPORT Herein, we describe successful cases of surgical and endoscopic removal after blister ingestion. The first case was that of a polymorbid 75-year-old man who presented with a

Biliary endoprostheses are widely used in the treatment of biliary lithiasis, malignant and benign strictures, and occasionally in long-lasting biliary fistulas. They can be placed endoscopically during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and radiologically (percutaneous) when the endoscopic route is not feasible. Complications associated with the endoscopic placement of biliary endoprostheses are well described in the literature, with migration being the most common. Intestinal obstruction is a rare complication associated with the migration of these devices. There are no reports i

An 8-month-old castrated male British Shorthair cat presented with acute anorexia and vomiting. The overall clinical presentation included generalized depression. Physical examination revealed palpable abdominal mass, thus foreign body or intussusception was suspected. Abdominal radiographs showed segmental dilation of small intestine and ultrasonography revealed target lesion with dilated small bowel loops and disrupted normal wall layering, suggestive of intussusception. Exploratory laparotomy confirmed congenital mesenteric defects associated with small intestinal obstruction. Surgical inte
