Biliary endoprostheses are widely used in the treatment of biliary lithiasis, malignant and benign strictures, and occasionally in long-lasting biliary fistulas. They can be placed endoscopically during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and radiologically (percutaneous) when the endoscopic route is not feasible. Complications associated with the endoscopic placement of biliary endoprostheses are well described in the literature, with migration being the most common. Intestinal obstruction is a rare complication associated with the migration of these devices. There are no reports i

An 8-month-old castrated male British Shorthair cat presented with acute anorexia and vomiting. The overall clinical presentation included generalized depression. Physical examination revealed palpable abdominal mass, thus foreign body or intussusception was suspected. Abdominal radiographs showed segmental dilation of small intestine and ultrasonography revealed target lesion with dilated small bowel loops and disrupted normal wall layering, suggestive of intussusception. Exploratory laparotomy confirmed congenital mesenteric defects associated with small intestinal obstruction. Surgical inte

We present a case of obstruction in the third portion of the duodenum secondary to a phytobezoar in an adult patient with no surgical history and without a vegan diet. High intestinal obstruction due to a phytobezoar is rarely described in the literature, posing a diagnostic challenge when evaluating potential differentials in the emergency setting. Subsequently, we conduct a review focusing on tomographic findings and the surgical specimen, highlighting key points to consider when addressing such pathologies.

Crohn's Disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract, posing diagnostic and management challenges due to its potential involvement of any segment from the mouth to the anus. Device-assisted enteroscopy (DAE) has emerged as a significant advancement in the management of CD, particularly for its ability to access the small intestine-a region difficult to evaluate with conventional endoscopic methods. This review discusses the pivotal role of DAE in the nuanced management of CD, emphasizing its enhanced diagnostic precision and therapeutic efficacy. DAE techniques

GOALS: This systematic review aims to evaluate the risk factors, clinical features, and outcomes of bowel perforation caused by stent migration after endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).
BACKGROUND: Distal migration of biliary stents can occur after ERCP. Upon migration, most stents pass through the intestine without adverse events; however, bowel perforation has been reported.
STUDY: A comprehensive literature search of PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases was conducted through October 2023 for articles that reported bowel perforation because of stent migration. Cases of

Trichobezoars are conglomerates of hair within the gastro-intestinal tract, commonly detected in the stomach, and they can present with the Rapunzel syndrome. Isolated small-bowel trichobezoars are extremely rare. Three female patients presented with abdominal pain and bilious vomiting, and underwent various imaging examinations. Two were diagnosed with small-bowel trichobezoars with intestinal obstruction and one with intestinal obstruction only. All three underwent surgery. Two underwent laparoscopic exploration and one underwent a laparotomy. One and two patients had isolated small-bowel tr

While bowel obstruction is the most common surgical disorder of the small intestine, small bowel obstruction due to Meckel's diverticulum is a relatively rare occurrence. We encountered a compelling case of small bowel obstruction that turned out to be more complex than anticipated, involving a Meckel's diverticulum with some unforeseen findings. We followed standard guidelines for history-taking, examination, investigations, and management of the intestinal obstruction. After exhausting conservative treatment options, we opted for surgical intervention, and the unexpected cause of the obstruc

BACKGROUND: Bladder foreign bodies commonly arise as urgent issues in urology. These foreign bodies are typically extracted through cystoscopy or cystotomy. In general, these surgical approaches rarely lead to serious complications.
METHODS: A 34-year-old woman presented with a one-year history of frequent urination, urgency, and urodynia. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan revealed the presence of an intrauterine device (IUD) [a medium-sized (20 mm × 22 mm) circular IUD] near the posterior bladder wall. The object was successfully removed via cystoscopy. Two months later, the patient ex

BACKGROUND: Ingestion of gastrointestinal foreign bodies (FB) is a common clinical problem worldwide. Approximately 10-20% of FBs require an endoscopic procedure for removal, and < 1% require surgery.
CASE DESCRIPTION: An 89-year-old male with Alzheimer's disease was hospitalized because of abdominal pain, abdominal distention, vomiting for three days, and cessation of bowel movements for six days. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan showed a small intestinal obstruction and an atypical FB in the small intestine. A pill and remaining plastic casing were removed from the small intestine du

INTRODUCTION: An endoscopic intragastric balloon (IGB) placement is one of the minimally invasive methods of obesity treatment. One of the rare serious complications is mechanical bowel obstruction requiring operative management. We report a case of a male patient with small bowel obstruction due to IGB migration and the literature review of complications during IGB treatment. Detailed Case Description: A patient with a BMI of 28 kg/m2 was admitted to the hospital with spontaneous deflation of an IGB. Due to the suspected location of IGB in the ileum laparoscopy was performed. The enterotomy w

ATP-binding cassette transporter subfamily G member 2 (ABCG2) is responsible for the excretion of foreign substances, such as uric acid (UA) and indoxyl sulfate (IS), from the body. Given the importance of increased ABCG2 expression in UA excretion, we investigated the enhancement of intestinal ABCG2 expression using Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 06CC2 (LP06CC2). Mice were reared on a potassium oxonate-induced high-purine model at doses of 0.02% or 0.1% LP06CC2 for three weeks. Results showed that LP06CC2 feeding resulted in increased ABCG2 expression in the small intestine. The expression lev

INTRODUCTION: A textiloma or gossypiboma is a retained surgical material in the body after an operation. It may be asymptomatic or revealed by complications such as occlusion, perforation, and fistulization.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of intraabdominal textiloma mimicking a mesenteric tumor. The patient has a history of open cholecystectomy. She was referred to our department for the discovery on abdominal computed tomography scan (CT-scan) of a mass in the mesentery. A laparotomy was performed observing a textiloma which was resected with part of the small intestine. The evolution was sat

Incidental identification of foreign body (FB) during daily screening endoscopy is not rare. The patients may have unspecific symptoms and do not report a history of FB ingestion at presentation. Although these FBs mostly pass through the gastrointestinal tract uneventfully, a certain proportion could be impacted and cause complications. Lack of a definite history of FB ingestion could make diagnosis difficult and delay treatment when FB presents with deceiving endoscopic appearances. We report a duodenal FB mimicking erosion found in screening upper endoscopy.

INTRODUCTION: Foreign body ingestion is a common occurrence in the pediatric population. Superabsorbent polymers (i.e., water beads [WB]), such as Orbeez, are brightly colored spheres, can expand up to 100x their original size and are marketed as toys for kids. Ingested WB may lead to a bowel obstruction and typically require surgical removal.
METHODS: Fully expanded WBs (N = 15) were placed into 1 of the 3 solutions: water (N = 5), gastrografin (N = 5), or 1:1 mixture of gg and water (N = 5), with serial diameter measurements obtained at 1, 4, 8, and 24 h. Additionally, fully expanded WBs we

BACKGROUND: Foreign bodies (FBs) in the gastrointestinal tract are a common occurrence in pediatric patients, often requiring medical intervention for removal. Conventional extraction methods can be challenging, particularly when the FB is unusually large, long, abnormally positioned, or tightly embedded, presenting a gap in safe, non-surgical management techniques.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this report, we describe the innovative use of a lasso structure formed by a guidewire and biopsy forceps to successfully remove a tightly embedded toothbrush from the duodenum of a pediatric patient with sch

BACKGROUND: Small bowel bezoar obstruction (SBBO) is a rare clinical condition characterized by hard fecal masses in the small intestine, causing intestinal obstruction. It occurs more frequently in the elderly and bedridden patients, but can also affect those with specific gastrointestinal dysfunctions. Diagnosing SBBO is challenging due to its clinical presentation, which mimics other intestinal obstructions. While surgical intervention is the typical treatment for SBBO, advancements in endoscopic techniques have led to increased use of non-surgical methods, such as endoscopic lithotripsy.

INTRODUCTION: Ingested foreign bodies are common in otolaryngology and gastrointestinal surgery, with grill brush bristles posing different risks. This case report describes a small bowel perforation after ingestion of a grill brush bristle. This is an extremely rare complication.
CASE REPORT: A 51-year-old woman presented with two days of left-sided abdominal pain. Lab tests showed elevated CRP, and a CT scan indicated inflammation and a possible foreign body. Diagnostic laparoscopy revealed a wire bristle perforating the small intestine, leading to resection and anastomosis. The bristle was
