Ingestion and surgical retrieval of an endodontic file: a case report.

Ingestions and aspirations of foreign bodies are rare, but do occasionally occur during dental treatment. Although reports exist, few include photos demonstrating the extensive surgical intervention that may be necessary to manage such events. Perhaps this lack of visualization, and associated lack of awareness, is one of the reasons some clinicians still provide non-surgical root canal therapy (NSRCT) without a rubber dam. This case report outlines the medical treatment of a 30-year-old male who initially presented to a general dentist's office (not associated with the authors) for NSRCT of t

Coexisting of small bowel perforation and abdominal cocoon syndrome: A case report.

Abdominal cocoon syndrome (ACS) is a rare situation and has an unknown etiology. Patients are characterized by the development of intraabdominal fibrotic tissue surrounding the small intestine as a result of chronic inflammation of the peritoneum. Small bowel perforations due to foreign bodies are not frequent in clinical practice. The coexistence of these two rare situations are extremely uncommon. In this article, the radiological findings and treatment process of the patient who presented with acute abdomen syndrome findings and the association of these two rare conditions are presented.

General anesthesia with endotracheal intubation ensures the quick removal of magnetic foreign bodies: A case report.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of ingestion of magnetic foreign bodies in the gastrointestinal tract has been increasing year by year. Due to their strong magnetic attraction, if multiple gastrointestinal foreign bodies enter the small intestine, it can lead to serious complications such as intestinal perforation, necrosis, torsion, and bleeding. Severe cases require surgical intervention. CASE SUMMARY: We report a 6-year-old child who accidentally swallowed multiple magnetic balls. Under timely and safe anesthesia, the magnetic balls were quickly removed through gastroscopy before entering the sm

Exploring the uncommon: A case report on localized peritonitis caused by ingested toothpick.

INTRODUCTION: Bowel perforation is a serious emergency. Occasionally, sharp objects like toothpicks can get stuck in narrow parts of the small intestine, potentially resulting in impaction, obstruction, or perforation. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 20-year-old male arrived at our hospital's emergency department with sudden, severe abdominal pain persisting for 24 h. On examination, his abdomen showed tenderness, and bowel sounds were reduced. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) indicated possible small intestine inflammation due to a foreign object and a diagnostic laparoscopy revealed a h

Endoscopic management of duodenal perforation caused by foreign bodies in adults: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Duodenal perforation caused by foreign bodies (FBs) is very rare but is an urgent emergency that traditionally requires surgical intervention. Several case reports have reported the successful endoscopic removal of duodenal perforating FBs. Here we aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of endoscopic management of duodenal perforating FBs in adults. METHODS: Between October 2004 and October 2022, 12,851 patients with endoscopically diagnosed gastrointestinal FBs from four tertiary hospitals in China were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were enrolled if they were end

Robotic D3 Partial Duodenal Resection with Primary Side-to-Side Anastomosis.

Duodenal stenosis is a condition that can be related to several diseases, being either intrinsic, such as neoplasm and inflammatory stenosis, or extrinsic, such as pancreatic pseudocyst, superior mesenteric artery syndrome, and foreign bodies. Current treatments range from endoscopic approaches, such as endoscopic resection and stent placement, to surgical approaches, including duodenal resection, pancreaticoduodenectomy, and gastrointestinal bypass. Minimally invasive robot-assisted surgery is gaining importance due to its potential to decrease surgical stress, intraoperative blood loss, and

Gastrointestinal Bezoars in Paediatrics: Case Series and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Bezoars are indigestible lumps which are usually found in stomach. Types of bezoar include phytobezoar, trichobezoar, lithobezoar, pharmacobezoar, plasticobezoar, lactobezoar and metal bezoar. Trichobezoars mostly affect females in 20s and 30s with a rarity in paediatrics. Unexplained complaints with a palpable mass are commonly found in these patients. Treatment involves retrieval of mass with searching for others. The purpose of this study was to present data and surgical management of cases with trichobezoars. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We documented a retrospective review of trich

Enhanced accuracy for classification of video capsule endoscopy images using multiple deep learning convolutional neural networks.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Video capsule endoscopy (VCE) is widely used in the detection of abnormalities in the small intestine. However, it remains challenging to correctly identify a limited number of possible abnormal images from tens of thousands of total images, and this impediment has limited expansion of the technology. More recently, artificial intelligence (AI) technology has been used in classifying VCE images from patients, but clinical-grade diagnostic accuracy (>99%) has not been achieved. METHODS: This study proposes a system for the automatic classification of a number of categories

Three-dimensional computed tomography reconstruction diagnosed digestive tract perforation and acute peritonitis caused by Monopterus albus: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Few reports have described living foreign bodies in the human body. The current manuscript demonstrates that computed tomography (CT) is an effective tool for accurate preoperative evaluation of living foreign bodies in clinic. The three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction technology could clearly display anatomical structures, lesions and adjacent organs, improving diagnostic accuracy and guiding the surgical decision-making process. CASE SUMMARY: Herein we describe a 68-year-old man diagnosed with digestive tract perforation and acute peritonitis caused by a foreign body of Monopter

The displaced polymer clamp entered the duodenum causing an abscess: A case report.

RATIONALE: The Hem-o-lok clip, made from a nonabsorbable polymer, and its predecessor the metal ligation clip have been used widely for laparoscopic or robot-assisted surgery to ligate the cystic duct after a cholecystectomy, to ligate the appendix after an appendectomy, or control hemorrhage or on occasion to occlude a fistula or enterotomy. Displacement of these ligation clips to distant sites is an extremely rare complication in clinical practice. PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient is a 67-year old female who sought medical attention for 3 days due to worsening intermittent upper abdominal pain

Duodenal diastatic perforation due to double gastric and jejunal trichobezoar in a patient with Rapunzel syndrome.

Rapunzel syndrome is a rare clinical entity in which a trichobezoar is produced by the ingestion of hair at the gastric level, extending in the form of a tail towards the duodenum. It occurs in young patients with trichotillomania and trichophagia. We present the case of a 24-year-old woman with a history of anxiety without treatment, who for 10 years presented trichotillomania and trichophagia, producing a picture of intestinal obstruction that required surgical intervention, evidencing a giant Trichobezoar throughout the gastric cavity and one jejunum associated with diastatic perforation. d

An atypical death from Rapunzel syndrome: a case report.

Trichotillomania is a psychiatric disorder characterized by recurring urges to pulling out hairs, eyelashes, or down in other parts of the body. Trichophagia, which is the urge to ingesting the pulled-out hairs, can cause Rapunzel syndrome, an unusual disorder where gastric trichobezoars can be found in the small intestine. Trichobezoars, amorphous masses composed of undigested food formed by hairs, can obstruct the gastrointestinal tract up to simulating symptoms typical of bowel obstruction. Rapunzel syndrome, named after Grimm's tale, may cause death, especially in the pediatric population,

An Atypical Case of Meckel's Diverticulum with Small Bowel Obstruction: Surgical Anatomy, Embryology and Clinical Implications.

Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the most frequent congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Atypical presentations with life threatening complications include intestinal obstruction, intussusceptions, peritonitis, foreign body lodgement in the MD, perforated viscera etc. which require prompt diagnosis. Ectopic gastric and pancreatic tissues are found in up to half of the cases which can escalate the complications. However clinical diagnosis is not easy especially when the presentation is atypical. A high index of clinical suspicion is required to diagnose elusive MD with associated

Multiple bezoars causing small bowel obstruction: a unique case of resolution with upper and low GI endoscopy.

Reports of obstructing foreign bodies in the small bowel are rare and the majority describe surgical resolution. We report a case of successful endoscopic treatment of a small bowel obstruction (SBO) caused by multiple bezoars. A 92-year-old female presented to the Emergency Department with a history of persistent vomiting. Computed tomography (CT) showed gastric distension and an intraluminal ovaloid foreign body with a heterogenous density in the second portion of the duodenum, suggestive of bezoar.
