The threats leading to the extinction of humanity accelerate the evolution and development of materials that are capable of providing conditions for preserving health and, implicitly, life. In our work, we developed drug delivery systems based on mesoporous silica which can deliver an antibiotic, bacitracin, in a more controlled manner. The synthesis of the FDU-12 was performed through a sol-gel method and alternatively functionalized with -NH2 groups or with poly(N-acryloylmorpholine) chains. The loading of bacitracin was performed using the vacuum-assisted method we successfully used to load

Monitoring the health of cetaceans is challenging as traditional approaches including vessel-based surveys and necropsies are often opportunistic and limited in their ability to detect subtle physiological changes. Infrared thermography (IRT) offers a non-invasive alternative by detecting surface temperature anomalies that may reflect localised physiological variation, including changes associated with inflammation, scarring, tissue disruption or thermoregulatory processes. Mounted on drones, IRT can enable remote thermal imaging of free-ranging individuals. This case study presented prelimina

Respiratory motion is a long-standing challenge for lung stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), particularly for centrally located lung tumors where increased toxicity demands more precise motion management during treatment. Current two-dimensional imaging approaches are insufficient for 3D tumor deformable motion tracking. In this study, we developed and evaluated a Surface-derived Three-dimensional (3D) AI-driven Real-time (STAR) imaging system by transforming a surface imaging system into a 3D real-time imaging solution. STAR integrated two key components: (1) prior-model-free spatiotempora

BACKGROUND: Non-invasive estimation of intracardiac electrograms (EGMs) from body surface potential measurements (BSPMs) could reduce reliance on invasive mapping and enable safer, patient-specific characterization of atrial arrhythmias. Conventional inverse problem formulations, such as Tikhonov regularization, are limited by ill-posedness, sensitivity to anatomical inaccuracies, and low spatial resolution.
OBJECTIVE: In this work, we propose a dual-branch deep learning (DL) architecture based on a variational autoencoder (VAE) to directly reconstruct atrial EGMs from BSPMs.
METHODS: A data

The ubiquitous and highly conserved programmed cell death pathways that are essential for tissue development and homeostasis are accompanied by distinct morphological alterations. Apoptotic cells undergo fragmentation that is concomitant with the exposure of phosphatidylserine (PS) on the membrane surface. Large fragments, called apoptotic bodies, as well as much smaller and more numerous vesicles, are released. While the molecular mechanisms underlying apoptotic body formation have been explored, much less is known about vesicle biogenesis. We used an inducible, active form of TMEM16F to dete

Understanding the three-dimensional shape of children's feet is valuable for designing appropriate footwear and orthotic devices, tracking growth trajectories, and supporting foot health and development. The most important anthropometric change in the U.S. in recent years is the increase in body mass at every age, but the effects of these trends on child foot shapes have not previously been studied. To address this gap, we collected high-resolution, three-dimensional (3d) foot surface data from 490 children ages 3-17 years across body mass index (BMI) from 12.4 to 52.6 kg/m2 and developed a st

BACKGROUND: There has been increased interest in the biologic augmentation of osteochondral allografts (OCAs), specifically the use of autologous bone marrow, to decrease failure rates. The iliac crest is a common donor site, but its use is associated with increased pain separate from the primary surgical site and increased complexity in the operating room setup and draping. Local bone marrow aspirate (BMA) from the proximal tibia or femoral condyle addresses these limitations, but the quality of the aspirate may be lower. It has not been determined whether this difference in aspirate quality

This article discusses a recent article by Zha et al, which explores new pathogenic pathways contributing to diabetic nephropathy in a study conducted on male mice. Diabetic kidney disease outcomes remain suboptimal; it is the leading cause of end-stage kidney disease in the developed world. Previous knowledge about diabetic nephropathy focused on glomerular pathology. Advancing knowledge led to the introduction of new pathogenic concepts beyond glomerulopathy. This work by Zha et al explored an important podocyte pathway and its link to the proximal tubular cells. Podocytes are essential for

Two sets of high-quality epitaxial ruthenium oxide (RuO2) thin films with different thicknesses were synthesized in situ on cost-competitive sapphire substrates by using a pulsed laser deposition technique. The first set of films, with a thickness of 40 nm and a sheet resistance of 15.7 Ω/□, was prepared using 2100 laser pulses, while the second set of films, with a thickness of 87 nm and a sheet resistance of 6.7 Ω/□, was prepared using 4800 laser pulses. All other deposition parameters were kept the same. The post-deposition structural and morphological measurements showed that both sets of

It is rare for patients to survive and be discharged with extensive severe burns in combination with severe acute kidney injury (AKI). The case under discussion involved a patient who had sustained critical burn injuries, with 96% of the patient's total body surface area affected, 80% of which were categorized as third-degree burns. Severe AKI was observed on the initial day following the burn injury, and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) was commenced on the subsequent day. In response to inadequate oral intake, long-term enteral and supplemental parenteral nutrition was administere

Nanoscale metal-organic frameworks have great potential in constructing a high-performance anticancer nanodrug delivery system (NDDS) for combining phototherapy and chemotherapy. However, their practical applications are still challenged by a limited antitumor effect and complex component. In this study, we proposed constructing a multifunctional NDDS via simply integrating positron-emitting radionuclide 89Zr and chemotherapeutic doxorubicin (DOX) into the porous coordination network-222 (PCN-222) featuring intrinsic photoactivity and good guest accommodation ability. It has been demonstrated

Heterotopic ossification (HO), the abnormal formation of bone in soft tissues, is a debilitating complication that occurs after severe burns, trauma, and joint replacement surgery. Current diagnostic methods detect HO only after substantial progression, limiting opportunities for early intervention. In this study, we show that circulating mesenchymal progenitor cells (cMPCs), isolated using a microfluidic iChip from patients undergoing hip replacement and a mouse model of traumatic HO, exhibit HO-associated gene expression as early as 6 hours post-injury-41 days before radiographic detection.

BACKGROUND: Accurate assessment of arrhythmia propagation can help identify ablation targets, but current methods are limited by local activation time (LAT) variability, catheter orientation dependence, and inconsistent sampling density.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to extend LAT-independent omnipolar technology to catheters with arbitrary electrode arrangements, compare estimates with LAT-derived equivalents, and demonstrate a weighted resampling algorithm that produces clear and robust visualizations of wavefront propagation.
METHODS: Omnipolar estimates of conduction velocity (CV), activat

Clip-and-burn is a forestry and land management technique common in China and other tropical regions worldwide to clear land for agriculture or to manage vegetation. However, the dynamics of carbon and nitrogen in karst regions following clip-and-burn practices remain largely unknown. Here, we evaluate the impact of clip-and-burn management practices on carbon and nitrogen cycling in the Karst region of China. The treatments included high-intensity fire (HIF), low-intensity fire (LIF), clipping and fire (CF), clipping (CP), and control (CK). Soil samples were collected one year after treatment
