The origin and course of the coronary arteries were studied in 1,436 Syrian hamsters belonging to 10 breeding colonies subjected to high endogamous pressure by mating either animals of the same litter or first cousins. The 202 deaths connected with burns in 1976-1986 included 134 in which death occurred during the fire. In 49 cases the face was so badly charred that it was not possible to judge whether hemorrhage had occurred in the eyelids and/or conjuctivae. The method of accelerated plasty with an inguinal flap was used for treatment of 13 patients with electric burns and frostbites of the IV degree. The 2nd step of the non-free skin plasty was performed 5 days (120 hours) after the first operation which was possible following a special training--a periodical, with increasing duration of the compression of the flap feeding pedicle which was started next day after the first step of the plasty.

The care of burns to the head, face, and neck remains a challenge to the clinician. From 1978 to 1986, halo traction was used as an immobilizing device and as a protective frame for 31 patients with burns to the head (n = 8), face (n = 24), and neck (n = 28). The influence of hydration on the permeability of stripped and scalded skins of hairless mice was investigated in vitro using water and n-alkanols as test permeants. Irrespective of pretreatment, the permeation rates of water, methanol, and ethanol were unaffected by aqueous immersion of skin sections in a diffusion cell, consistent with earlier data on unprocessed skins. The tanning method using 7% silvernitrate and 2% mebromide solution for second degree burns in childhood is demonstrated. The advantages of this method are described as singular and painless application of the agent, little annoyance of the patient, bactericidal effect in second degree burns, low expenses and easy medical care. The procedure of tanning is preferred in treating burn injuries of the trunk and non mobile areas of the extremities. We report on indication, procedure of tanning and results in the treatment of 129 burned children.

A 51-year-old man suffered third-degree caustic burns of the esophagus and proximal two-thirds of the stomach. A tracheoesophageal fistula developed, and surgery was performed to exclude the esophagus from gastrointestinal reflux and to divert the oral secretions. An uneventful postoperative course was interrupted on the 27th day after the burn by massive hemoptysis and sudden death. Autopsy revealed an aortoesophageal fistula in addition to a tracheoesophageal fistula.

Seventy-four cases of acalculous cholecystitis in infants and children (seven personal cases and 67 from the literature) were analyzed. In 45 cases the cholecystitis appeared as a complication of another illness. The primary illnesses in our patients were leptospirosis (four cases), diarrhea (two cases), and third-degree burns (one case). All seven children were critically ill.
