Risk of Burns During Active External Rewarming for Accidental Hypothermia.

This article describes 3 incidents in which therapeutic or experimental warming of cold individuals caused first- to third-degree burns to the skin. Mechanisms for these injuries are considered. We conclude that active external rewarming of the trunk of a cold patient in the field can be administered safely and burn risk reduced if 1) manufacturer instructions are followed; 2) insulation is placed between the skin the and heat source; and 3) caregivers make regular efforts to observe heated skin for possible pending burn injury. Direct inspection is mandatory for the skin of areas that are on

Acellular fish skin matrix on thin-skin graft donor sites: a preliminary study.

OBJECTIVE: Surgery for head and neck cancer often requires free flap reconstructions, whose harvesting site often requires a thin-skin graft. Wounds from the thin-skin donor site are comparable to an intermediate or deep second-degree burn. This is uncomfortable and can lead to complications such as a long healing time, local infections and pain. Since they are reproducible, these wounds may serve as a model for an objective assessment of new healing medical devices. The acellular fish skin matrix is a new medical device designed to improve healing quality and time. METHODS: We compared the o

Stepwise Management of Severe Thoracogenic Scoliosis in Burned Child.

BACKGROUND: Skin and soft tissue retraction secondary to burns of the trunk may induce severe and progressive thoracogenic spinal deformities in children. Its management is rarely described. CASE DESCRIPTION: Our study reports a case of severe thoracic scoliosis in a 13-year-old adolescent, secondary to soft tissue retraction due to trunk burn in early childhood. The Cobb angle of the scoliosis was 100 degrees. The 3-stage surgical strategy consisted of scar excision and skin graft in the first stage, halo gravity traction in the second stage, and posterior correction and fusion of the spine

A rare approach? Microsurgical breast reconstruction after severe burns.

Breast deformity, in post-burn patients, is a common problem leading to lower self-esteem and reclusive behavior that impairs quality of life. The authors present the course of treatment of an 18-year-old immigrant girl who suffered second- to third-degree burns over approximately 20% of her total body surface area in her early childhood. The second- to third-degree burns were located on her right trunk and abdomen, as well as her right shoulder, neck, and right groin area. Since it was not offered in her home country, reconstructive surgery, including microsurgical breast reconstruction, was

Statistical analysis of factors affecting re-operative times in paediatric patients with scar deformity after deep second-degree burn injury.

Deep second-degree burn injuries pose a challenge for treating scar deformity in developing paediatric patients. Some patients underwent several re-operations during their development. There was no literature reporting which factors affect re-operative times. In this article, we intend to analyse possible influential factors that are responsible for re-operative times in paediatric patients with scar deformity after deep second-degree burn injuries. From 2010 to 2016, 177 paediatric cases with a history of deep second-degree burn injury who underwent re-operation once, twice, and equal to or m

Reclaiming Autologous Amputated Tissue for Limb Salvage of a Diabetic Foot Burn with Underlying Critical Limb Ischemia.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus is a worldwide pandemic that impacts more than 387 million people, with 29 million individuals affected in the United States alone. Diabetic patients have a 25% lifetime risk of developing a diabetic foot ulcer (DFU). Having a DFU is associated with a risk of recurrence approaching 70%. In addition, 1 in 6 patients with DFU will have a lower-limb amputation, with an associated increase in mortality ranging from 47% to 70%. Therefore, limb salvage is critical in patients with DFU. CASE STUDY: This article describes the case of a 70-year-old man with diabetes melli

Burns from ignited household aerosols in the kitchen: a case series.

Aerosol sprays are commonly used products in daily living. Aerosols in kitchen products have prompted for use of 'food grade' or chemically inert propellants; however, they commonly contain gases or gaseous mixtures such as butane, propane and dimethyl ether that are flammable. When such sprays are used near heat sources, such as kitchen appliances, combustibles in these products can result in ignition and burn injury. Given the ubiquity of such sprays, surprisingly burns sustained from household aerosols are not characterised in the literature. We conducted a retrospective search of all burn

Methylene blue and parathyroid adenoma localization: Three new cases of a rare cutaneous complication.

Methylene blue has been safely used for the localization of parathyroid glands during parathyroidectomy, and only a few adverse effects have been documented. Methylene blue administration as a cause of pulse-oximetry-related skin injury is extremely rare. We describe 2 such cases in patients who developed a blister on the second digit at the pulse oximetry site after an uncomplicated excision of a parathyroid adenoma. In another case, a patient became bradycardic intraoperatively; she was successfully resuscitated, but she incurred a second-degree burn at the pulse oximetry site. In all 3 case

Hybrid NOTES transvaginal intraperitoneal onlay mesh in abdominal wall hernias: an alternative to traditional laparoscopic procedures.

INTRODUCTION: Abdominal wall hernias are increasingly treated by laparoscopic placement of an intraperitoneal onlay mesh (IPOM). We present an alternative technique for women: the laparoscopic-assisted transvaginal IPOM. METHODS: Before surgery, all patients underwent a gynecological examination. The patients agreed to IPOM repair via a transvaginal approach, and written informed consent for surgery was obtained. Pneumoperitoneum was established with a Veress needle at the umbilicus. This access was subsequently dilated to 5 mm (VersaStep), and a 5-mm laparoscope was inserted. Under laparosco
