Danger in the kitchen: pressure cooker burns.

BACKGROUND: Burns resulting from pressure cooker explosions are preventable domestic injuries that occur during routine kitchen use; however, they are underrepresented in the medical literature despite their potential severity. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and demographic characteristics, treatment approaches, and outcomes of patients with pressure cooker-related burns. METHODS: In this retrospective study, medical records of patients who presented to a tertiary burn center with pressure cooker-related burns between 2016 and 2024 were reviewed. Collected data included demographic

The Effect of the Coexistence of Hair Follicle and Perforator Artery Density on Length of Hospital Stay in Burns.

Whilst total body surface area, burn depth and age are established determinants of hospital stay, the independent influence of the anatomical region's biological microenvironment remains unexamined. This study evaluates the association between regional perforator artery density, hair follicle density and LOS in patients with second-degree burns. A single-centre retrospective cohort study was conducted on 1593 patients with second-degree burns. An isolated single-region subgroup (n = 352) was analysed independently. Regional perforator and hair follicle density data were compiled from published

From thunder to silence: Cochlear implantation for bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss after lightning strike.

INTRODUCTION: Lightning strikes can cause diverse neuro-otologic injuries. Tympanic membrane rupture is common, whereas bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss with vestibular dysfunction and perilymphatic fistula is rare. Cochlear implantation for lightning-induced deafness has been reported only once. A farm worker struck by lightning sustained second-degree burns and intracranial hemorrhages requiring emergency neurosurgical management and cervical wound closure. During intensive care, clear left-sided otorrhea prompted ENT evaluation, revealing bilateral tympanic membrane perforation

Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Restore Standards in Medical and Dental Education in Pakistan.

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

The prognostic relevance of full-thickness burns on ABSI.

INTRODUCTION: The Abbreviated Burn Severity Index (ABSI) by Tobiasen, which is commonly used to estimate the mortality risk of severely burned patients, calculates an additional point for the existence of full-thickness (third-degree) burns. [1] However, the score does not consider the extent of the body surface affected by third-degree burns. To understand whether there is a way to improve ABSI prediction power, this study aims to determine the influence of full-thickness burns on survival rates and how it affects the predictive precision of the ABSI. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study, the

Rare Case of Fusobacterium necrophorum Bacteremia and Pleural Empyema Originating from a Burn Ulcer in a 16-Year-Old Female Patient.

BACKGROUND Most Fusobacterium necrophorum infections originate in the head and neck region. Infections originating from sites other than the head and neck are rare but are more common in older than in younger adults and have a higher mortality rate than that of infections originating from the head and neck region. CASE REPORT We present the case of a previously healthy 16-year-old female patient who developed bacteremia and pleural effusions with a burn ulcer on the lower leg but had no abnormality in the head and neck region. She sustained a second-degree burn injury on the left shin that rem

Airway management for patients with tracheal stenosis and severe scar contracture of the face and neck via bronchoscopy: a case report.

Both anaesthesiologists and surgeons experience challenges in managing airway stenosis and scar contracture in the face and neck. Herein, we report the case of a 38-year-old woman (BMI 23.1 kg/m2, third-degree burns covering 40% of her body, an American Society of Anaesthesiologists physical status III) with an unusual case of airway constriction. This patient had a predictable difficult airway (mouth opening of 2 cm, bilateral nostril scar hyperplasia, Mallampatti score III, scarring of the head and neck, and severe tracheal stenosis). Tracheal stenosis measuring 5.5 mm in width as observed 8

INTRODUCTION: Oral commissure stenosis and lower eyelid ectropion from burns are functionally impairing and challenging to treat. Evaluation of various treatment modalities is limited by a lack of preclinical models. Described is a method for inducing controlled, titratable oral commissure and lower eyelid burns in swine for future treatment research. METHODS: Burn wounds 3 cm in diameter were applied to the lower eyelid and oral commissure of seven anesthetized Yorkshire swine for 10, 15, 20, or 30 s at 100 °C with a custom designed thermocouple-controlled burn device and observed for 3, 30,

The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Self-Inflicted Burn Injuries in Patients With Previously Diagnosed Bipolar Disorder.

Here we present a case of a 52-year-old female patient who was admitted to the Clinic in December 2021 due to the presence of right side facial burns which were caused by a cigarette lighter under suspicious conditions. Her past medical history revealed she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of 20 and was hospitalized multiple times for the treatment of manic episodes. The last psychiatric hospitalization took place in October 2021. She had deep second-degree burns on the right side of the face, head and neck, with a total body surface area involvement of approximately 3%. On hospi

A Rare Case of Severe Burn Injury to the Oropharynx Caused by a Flare Gun.

Flare gun injuries are rare, and patients often present with complex trauma that may require multiple operative interventions. Our objective is to explore a case of a 15-year-old male, who presented with second-degree flame burns to the face, left upper extremity and bilateral hands, as well as third-degree burns to the oropharynx and a tongue laceration after a flare gun was discharged into his mouth. The patient underwent multiple debridements of the oral cavity and oropharynx, and his hospital course was complicated by an intra-oral abscess. He eventually made a full recovery and was discha

The Therapeutic Role of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in the Interdisciplinary Treatment of Soft-Tissue Sarcomas in Germany-Cross-Sectional Results of a Prospective Nationwide Observational Study (PROSa).

Although the involvement of plastic surgery has been deemed important in the treatment of sarcoma patients to avoid oncological compromises and ameliorate patient outcomes, it is not ubiquitously available. The accessibility of defect reconstruction and its therapeutic impact on sarcoma care is the subject of this analysis. Cross-sectional data from 1309 sarcoma patients were collected electronically at 39 German study centers from 2017 to 2019. A total of 621 patients with surgical treatment for non-visceral soft-tissue sarcomas were included. The associated factors were analyzed explorativel

Tolerable degree of muscle sacrifice when harvesting a vastus lateralis or myocutaneous anterolateral thigh flap.

The myocutaneous anterolateral thigh (ALT) and vastus lateralis (VL) flaps include a large muscle mass and a sufficient vascular pedicle, and they have been used for decades to reconstruct traumatic and acquired defects of the head and neck and extremities. In spite of these benefits, musculoskeletal dysfunction was reported in nearly 1 out of 20 patients at follow-up. It is unclear whether the recently proposed muscle-sparing flap-raising approach could preserve VL muscle function and whether patients at increased risk could benefit from such an approach. Therefore, we performed a predictive

Three-port transoral robotic thyroidectomy without axillary incision: A preliminary report of 20 cases in China.

OBJECTIVE: Transoral scarless thyroid surgery has proven to be a popular alternative to traditional approaches. Transoral robotic thyroidectomy (TORT) has been reported using ports on the lower lip and axilla. Avoiding axillary incision can further reduce scars on the armpit. Here, we present our preliminary data from the initial 20 consecutive patients to explore the feasibility of three-port TORT without axillary incision. METHODS: From September 2017 to June 2019, we performed TORT at Beijing United Family Hospital using three intraoral ports without axillary incision via the da Vinci Si s

Face Burns: A 4-Year Experience.

Burns on the face pose unique management challenges because they are in a place that is constantly visible, so scars are hard to hide. The goal of this study was to review our experience of adult patients who had face burns. We performed a retrospective review of adult patients (≥18 years old) who were admitted to a regional burn center from July 2015 to June 2019 with face burns. Sex, age, ethnicity, burn etiology, burn size, and discharge status were collected from electronic medical records of the patients who met study criteria. RECONSTRUCTION OF DEEP HEAD BURN WITH A FREE FLAP - A CASE REPORT.

Third degree burn trauma of the head and neck requires an interdisciplinary approach. After emergency care and hemodynamic stabilization of the patient the focus lies on the reconstruction of the damaged tissue. The options of reconstruction are influenced by the general condition of the patient and by the condition of the surrounding tissues. The deep defects of the head are dangerous for a high risk of wound infection and possible fatal complications. In particular cases the first methods of choice for closure of the defect may be ineffective and a free flap transfer should be considered. We

Detection of helium in a fire victim: A case report.

We report here detection of helium in specimens derived from a burn autopsy case. A male was found in a burnt bedroom. Part of a heat-denatured plastic bag, sealing tape, and flexible tubing remained on his head and neck. In addition, five helium tanks were found near him. His history in conjunction with the discovery conditions suggested a suicide attempt by inhalation of helium. The body had extensive first to fourth degree burns caused by heat. A small amount of soot was deposited in the respiratory tract. Except for the thermal burns, no other injuries were found. Toxicologically, the bloo
