The Effect of the Coexistence of Hair Follicle and Perforator Artery Density on Length of Hospital Stay in Burns.

Whilst total body surface area, burn depth and age are established determinants of hospital stay, the independent influence of the anatomical region's biological microenvironment remains unexamined. This study evaluates the association between regional perforator artery density, hair follicle density and LOS in patients with second-degree burns. A single-centre retrospective cohort study was conducted on 1593 patients with second-degree burns. An isolated single-region subgroup (n = 352) was analysed independently. Regional perforator and hair follicle density data were compiled from published

From thunder to silence: Cochlear implantation for bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss after lightning strike.

INTRODUCTION: Lightning strikes can cause diverse neuro-otologic injuries. Tympanic membrane rupture is common, whereas bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss with vestibular dysfunction and perilymphatic fistula is rare. Cochlear implantation for lightning-induced deafness has been reported only once. A farm worker struck by lightning sustained second-degree burns and intracranial hemorrhages requiring emergency neurosurgical management and cervical wound closure. During intensive care, clear left-sided otorrhea prompted ENT evaluation, revealing bilateral tympanic membrane perforation

Rare Case of Fusobacterium necrophorum Bacteremia and Pleural Empyema Originating from a Burn Ulcer in a 16-Year-Old Female Patient.

BACKGROUND Most Fusobacterium necrophorum infections originate in the head and neck region. Infections originating from sites other than the head and neck are rare but are more common in older than in younger adults and have a higher mortality rate than that of infections originating from the head and neck region. CASE REPORT We present the case of a previously healthy 16-year-old female patient who developed bacteremia and pleural effusions with a burn ulcer on the lower leg but had no abnormality in the head and neck region. She sustained a second-degree burn injury on the left shin that rem

Design and validation of a preclinical model for oral commissure and lower eyelid thermal injury.

INTRODUCTION: Oral commissure stenosis and lower eyelid ectropion from burns are functionally impairing and challenging to treat. Evaluation of various treatment modalities is limited by a lack of preclinical models. Described is a method for inducing controlled, titratable oral commissure and lower eyelid burns in swine for future treatment research. METHODS: Burn wounds 3 cm in diameter were applied to the lower eyelid and oral commissure of seven anesthetized Yorkshire swine for 10, 15, 20, or 30 s at 100 °C with a custom designed thermocouple-controlled burn device and observed for 3, 30,

The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Self-Inflicted Burn Injuries in Patients With Previously Diagnosed Bipolar Disorder.

Here we present a case of a 52-year-old female patient who was admitted to the Clinic in December 2021 due to the presence of right side facial burns which were caused by a cigarette lighter under suspicious conditions. Her past medical history revealed she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of 20 and was hospitalized multiple times for the treatment of manic episodes. The last psychiatric hospitalization took place in October 2021. She had deep second-degree burns on the right side of the face, head and neck, with a total body surface area involvement of approximately 3%. On hospi

Acellular fish skin matrix on thin-skin graft donor sites: a preliminary study.

OBJECTIVE: Surgery for head and neck cancer often requires free flap reconstructions, whose harvesting site often requires a thin-skin graft. Wounds from the thin-skin donor site are comparable to an intermediate or deep second-degree burn. This is uncomfortable and can lead to complications such as a long healing time, local infections and pain. Since they are reproducible, these wounds may serve as a model for an objective assessment of new healing medical devices. The acellular fish skin matrix is a new medical device designed to improve healing quality and time. METHODS: We compared the o

Statistical analysis of factors affecting re-operative times in paediatric patients with scar deformity after deep second-degree burn injury.

Deep second-degree burn injuries pose a challenge for treating scar deformity in developing paediatric patients. Some patients underwent several re-operations during their development. There was no literature reporting which factors affect re-operative times. In this article, we intend to analyse possible influential factors that are responsible for re-operative times in paediatric patients with scar deformity after deep second-degree burn injuries. From 2010 to 2016, 177 paediatric cases with a history of deep second-degree burn injury who underwent re-operation once, twice, and equal to or m

Burns from ignited household aerosols in the kitchen: a case series.

Aerosol sprays are commonly used products in daily living. Aerosols in kitchen products have prompted for use of 'food grade' or chemically inert propellants; however, they commonly contain gases or gaseous mixtures such as butane, propane and dimethyl ether that are flammable. When such sprays are used near heat sources, such as kitchen appliances, combustibles in these products can result in ignition and burn injury. Given the ubiquity of such sprays, surprisingly burns sustained from household aerosols are not characterised in the literature. We conducted a retrospective search of all burn

Methylene blue and parathyroid adenoma localization: Three new cases of a rare cutaneous complication.

Methylene blue has been safely used for the localization of parathyroid glands during parathyroidectomy, and only a few adverse effects have been documented. Methylene blue administration as a cause of pulse-oximetry-related skin injury is extremely rare. We describe 2 such cases in patients who developed a blister on the second digit at the pulse oximetry site after an uncomplicated excision of a parathyroid adenoma. In another case, a patient became bradycardic intraoperatively; she was successfully resuscitated, but she incurred a second-degree burn at the pulse oximetry site. In all 3 case

Electrophysiologic monitoring correlates of recurrent laryngeal nerve heat thermal injury in a porcine model.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Thermal injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) may not be visually apparent and may go unrecognized intraoperatively. This study aimed to investigate the heat thermal tolerance of RLN and evaluate the electrophysiologic correlates of electromyographic (EMG) signal change during an acute RLN heat damage. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective porcine model with continuous intraoperative neuromonitoring (CIONM). METHODS: Ten pigs (20 RLNs) undergoing CIONM had their EMG tracings recorded and correlated with heated normal saline (NS) irrigation of varying temperature and durati

An experimental burn wound-healing study of non-thermal atmospheric pressure microplasma jet arrays.

In contrast with a thermal plasma surgical instrument based on coagulative and ablative properties, low-temperature (non-thermal) non-equilibrium plasmas are known for novel medicinal effects on exposed tissue while minimizing undesirable tissue damage. In this study we demonstrated that arrays of non-thermal microplasma jet devices fabricated from a transparent polymer can efficiently inactivate fungi (Candida albicans) as well as bacteria (Escherichia coli), both in vitro and in vivo, and that this leads to a significant wound-healing effect. Microplasma jet arrays offer several advantages o

Emergent treatment of button batteries in the esophagus: evolution of management and need for close second-look esophagoscopy.

OBJECTIVES: The evolving epidemiology of pediatric button battery ingestion is alarming. Currently, assessment of the degree of damage relies heavily on the initial esophagoscopy in a manner similar to the management of caustic ingestion. We have noted that use of this classic approach may delay the return to normal oral intake. Using several cases treated at our institution, we illustrate the value of "close second-look esophagoscopy" (CSLE) in expediting a return to normal oral intake after button battery ingestion. METHODS: We present a retrospective case series. RESULTS: Five patients (1

Firefighter burn injuries: predictable patterns influenced by turnout gear.

Approximately 100 firefighters suffer fatal injuries annually and tens of thousands receive nonfatal injuries. Many of these injuries require medical attention and restricted activity but may be preventable. This study was designed to elucidate etiology, circumstances, and patterns of firefighter burn injury so that further prevention strategies can be designed. In particular, modification of protective equipment, or turnout gear, is one potential strategy to prevent burn injury. An Institutional Review Board-approved retrospective review was conducted with records of firefighters treated for
