Shaved trunk skin folds of hairy mice were scalded for 20 s by water immersion. In one set of experiments the effect of increasing burn temperature (51 degrees C-60 degrees C) was studied, in another the folds were first scalded at 51 degrees C-54 degrees C and then immediately cooled for 30 min in 8 degrees C water. Animals were killed 2 h and 4 days postburn. Before sacrifice, Evans blue was injected i.v. to some animals to visualize preserved vascular perfusion and areas of increased permeability. Macroscopic observations (and photographic documentation) were made of the outside and inside

A report on a case of myositis ossificans following 50-60% burns (second to third-degree) on the trunk and extremities with periarticular localization of the ossification at the hip and knee joints. In terms of its extent and localization the ossification is primarily similar to post-paraplegic ossification of soft tissues.

The influence of hydration on the permeability of stripped and scalded skins of hairless mice was investigated in vitro using water and n-alkanols as test permeants. Irrespective of pretreatment, the permeation rates of water, methanol, and ethanol were unaffected by aqueous immersion of skin sections in a diffusion cell, consistent with earlier data on unprocessed skins. The permeation rates of butanol and hexanol also were insensitive to hydration, differing from earlier studies on normal, intact skin in which both solutes' rates doubled after 10 hr of soaking. Following both pretreatments,

The tanning method using 7% silvernitrate and 2% mebromide solution for second degree burns in childhood is demonstrated. The advantages of this method are described as singular and painless application of the agent, little annoyance of the patient, bactericidal effect in second degree burns, low expenses and easy medical care. The procedure of tanning is preferred in treating burn injuries of the trunk and non mobile areas of the extremities. We report on indication, procedure of tanning and results in the treatment of 129 burned children.

Freshly sacrificed hairless mice were burned dorsally by direct contact with 60 degrees C water for periods ranging from 15 seconds to 8 min. Wounds ranging in degree from superficial epidermis damage to injury penetrating well into subcutaneous musculature were inflicted. Burned skin sections and reference abdominal skin sections were excised, placed in diffusion cells and investigated with regards to their permeabilities to water, methanol, ethanol, n-butanol and n-octanol. The data were couched in terms of ratios of permeability coefficients of burned skin to normal skin (scalding coefficie

A 51-year-old man suffered third-degree caustic burns of the esophagus and proximal two-thirds of the stomach. A tracheoesophageal fistula developed, and surgery was performed to exclude the esophagus from gastrointestinal reflux and to divert the oral secretions. An uneventful postoperative course was interrupted on the 27th day after the burn by massive hemoptysis and sudden death. Autopsy revealed an aortoesophageal fistula in addition to a tracheoesophageal fistula.

Seventy-four cases of acalculous cholecystitis in infants and children (seven personal cases and 67 from the literature) were analyzed. In 45 cases the cholecystitis appeared as a complication of another illness. The primary illnesses in our patients were leptospirosis (four cases), diarrhea (two cases), and third-degree burns (one case). All seven children were critically ill. Abdominal pain and an abdominal mass were present in all. Fever was present in six of the seven patients, jaundice in four. Tube cholecystostomies were done in all cases. After recovery from their illness, the five surv

For purposes of comparison with the occlusive dressing method of treating burns, the exposure method was used in 30 cases-16 of first and second degree and 14 of third degree. Attempt was made to simulate the conditions which might be expected to prevail in mass treatment of burned patients-inadequate personnel and materials. Elaborate measures to immobilize burned areas were not employed. Healing of first and second degree burns was natural and the results satisfactory without further treatment. In third degree burns, skin grafting was necessary after the eschar was removed. Cracking of the e
