INTRODUCTION: Managing burns in pediatric patients is crucial due to their unique physiology and higher risk of complications compared to adults. Key components of burn management for pediatric patients involve assessing the extent of the burn injury, administering appropriate pain management, and closely monitoring for signs of infection. Comprehensive burn management includes securing an adequate airway, administering appropriate anesthesia, performing surgical debridement, repairing damaged regions with skin grafts, providing nutritional support, and facilitating rehabilitation for optimal

BACKGROUND: Burns can result in damage to the skin and subcutaneous soft tissues, leading to temporary or permanent injuries. Resina Draconis (RD), extracted from the trunk of the dragon blood tree, possesses high medicinal value and exhibits properties that promote blood circulation, antioxidation, and anti-inflammation. However, the effects of RD on wound healing in laser burn remain unclear.
METHODS: Rats were exposed to the fractional CO2 laser to generate a standardized second-degree laser burn, thereby establishing the acute skin barrier disruption model. Changes in tissue morphology we

A 34-year-old patient with no medical history was admitted following severe thermal burns (>85% of the body surface area), including deep second- and third-degree injuries. Surgical management aimed to heal the entire upper body (thorax, abdomen, and back) using topical oxygen therapy (TOT) on the deep second-degree burns, without burn excision or skin grafting, while processing conventional management of the remaining burned areas alongside specialized intensive care. TOT was performed using an innovative oxygenating dressing (HEMHealing, Hemarina SA, Morlaix, France) combined with convention

OBJECTIVES: Hot water bottles are widely used for warmth and therapeutic relief, but improper use can lead to burns, ranging from superficial to full-thickness skin injuries. Following the natural gas shortage caused by the complete halt of Russian gas supplies, European countries experienced a sharp increase in hot water bottle-related burns. However, data for Germany were not yet provided. This study examines the incidence of hot water bottle burns over a 10-year period, exploring potential correlations with natural gas prices, natural gas consumption, ambient temperature, and respiratory in

Burn management has significantly advanced in the past 75 years, resulting in improved mortality rates. However, there are still over one million burn victims in the United States each year, with over 3,000 burn-related deaths annually. The impacts of individual patient, hospital, and regional demographics on length of stay (LOS) and total cost have yet to be fully explored in a large nationally representative cohort. Thus, this study aimed to examine various hospital and patient characteristics using a sample of over 20,000 patients. Inpatient data from the National Inpatient Sample from 2008

Immediate burn wound care is a critical factor influencing the outcomes of burn treatment. In this study, we developed a spray-type alginate hydrogel dressing that promotes wound healing, reduces pain, and increases the convenience of use in a burn treatment emergency. We investigated the efficiency of newly developed spray-type alginate hydrogel dressing on the wound healing process. We investigated the efficacy of the alginate hydrogel dressing for wound healing in 30 Sprague Dawley rats. Four deep, round second-degree burn wounds (diameter, 1.5 cm) were created bilaterally on the dorsum of

BACKGROUND: Poland syndrome is a rare congenital chest wall developmental defect. Traditional reconstruction applies open to harvest of the latissimus dorsi muscle flap, but issues like large incisions and high complication rates exist. Endoscopic-assisted harvest of the latissimus dorsi muscle flap has minimally invasive advantages worth exploring for application in Poland syndrome patients.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the surgical situations of five Poland syndrome patients at our center, and systematically searched the literature, including 31 cases of endoscopic-assisted latissim

BACKGROUND: Decreased bone mineral density (BMD) is a common condition after a burn with significant complications that would be a global health problem. Also, balance can further worsen due to burning complications. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the additive effects of selected Qigong training exercises for 2 months to the standard physiotherapy regimen on bone mineral density and balance control post-thermal burn injuries.
METHODS: 110 participants (75 males and 35 females), aged 25-50, with deep second and third-degree thermal burns affecting the trunk and lower extremities, and a

An 18-year-old woman with an established history of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) presented for her 1-year dermatologic follow-up. Physical examination revealed two subcutaneous nodules on her right arm, axillary freckling, scattered café-au-lait macules (CALMs) on the trunk, and a 12 cm × 17 cm hyperpigmented rectangular region on her right flank (Figure 1). The pigmented patch contained numerous new CALMs that were morphologically consistent with CALMs identified on prior examinations; neither the patch nor the CALMs within it were present at prior examinations. Interestingly, the appearan

Burn depth is a critical factor in determining the healing potential of a burn as the extent of injury ultimately guides overall treatment. Visible-Light Hyperspectral Imaging is an FDA-approved, noninvasive, and noncontrast imaging technology that uses light waves within the visible spectrum to evaluate skin and superficial soft tissue perfusion. In this case report, visible-light hyperspectral imaging was used to evaluate a 37-year-old male who presented to the Emergency Department with a thermal burn of the trunk, back, and right upper extremity. Images were taken at initial evaluation, 6 h

BACKGROUND: Escharotomy is the primary effective intervention to relieve constriction and impending vascular compromise in deep, circumferential or near-circumferential burns of the extremities and trunk. Training on escharotomy indications, technique and pitfalls is essential, as escharotomy is both an infrequent and high-risk procedure in civilian and military medical environments, including low-resource settings. Therefore, we aimed to validate an educational strategy that combines video-based instruction with a low-cost, low-fidelity simulation model for teaching burn escharotomy.

CONTEXT: Although pressure cookers are very common kitchen utensils used in the United States, only a few cases of serious injuries secondary to pressure cooker explosions have been reported in the medical literature. When second-degree (i.e., "partial-thickness") burns result from pressure cooker explosions, wounds involving near to or greater than 10% of total body surface area typically require multidisciplinary treatment, with burn center referral for proper wound care, potential fluid resuscitation, and eventual scar management.
EXAMPLE CASE: The example patient described in this report

Hemicorporectomy or translumbar amputation is an extensive surgical procedure consisting in removing the lower portion of the body. Thakur et al. found a total of 71 hemicorporectomies described in literature before 2017. In the form of a case study we present the case of our patient with terminal pelvic osteomyelitis, in whom hemicorporectomy was subsequently performed, namely from the spine surgery perspective. The man, 19 years old, was exposed to high-voltage electricity and fell down from a height of 4 meters. He suffered an instable comminuted fracture of T10 (AO A3.3.) with paraplegia (
