Modeling and Analyzing for Thermal Protection of Firefighters' Glove by Phase Change Material.

Firefighter injures caused by burns and thermal stress occupies around 5%-10% of the total injuries annually. Glove is the thinnest/weakest components among the firefighter turnout gear, which can put firefighters, are at risk of severe wrist and hand burns during fire calls. Burns can occur quickly and enhancing the thermal protective performance of firefighters' gloves will prevent these burns. One-dimensional (1D) heat transfer modeling and simulations were performed through the COMSOL Multiphysics software to investigate the improvement of thermal protective performance when integrating a

Blinking Dermatitis: A Case Report.

CASE REPORT: Quincke sign manifested on the wrist of a young healthy man. The patient had self-treated with topical antibiotics and steroids for a second-degree burn, but then developed contact dermatitis followed by cellulitis. He presented to the emergency department with a "blinking" effect of the skin lesion. CONCLUSION: The "blinking" effect is the result of focal subcutaneous arterial dilatation in the zone of subcutaneous inflammation.

[Clinical effect of free anterolateral thigh flap combined with arterial vascular reconstruction on repairing high-voltage electrical burn wound on the wrist].

Objective: To explore the clinical effect of free anterolateral thigh flap combined with arterial vascular reconstruction on repairing high-voltage electrical burn wound of type Ⅱ and Ⅲ on the wrist. Methods: From May 2016 to February 2019, 25 patients with deep high-voltage electrical burn wounds on the wrist were admitted to Zhengzhou First People's Hospital, including 23 males and 2 females, aged 11-63 years. Among them, 4 cases had bilateral electrical burns on the wrist, and 21 cases had unilateral electrical burns on the wrist. There were 29 wounds in 29 affected limbs with depth of full

Incidence and characteristics of chemical burns.

OBJECTIVES: Chemical burns can lead to serious health outcomes. Previous studies about chemical burns have been performed based on burn center data so these studies have provided limited information about the incidence of chemical burns at the national level. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence and characteristics of chemical burns using nationwide databases. METHODS: A cohort representing the Korean population, which was established using a national health insurance database, and a nationwide workers' compensation database were used to evaluate the incidence and characteristi

Firefighter burn injuries: predictable patterns influenced by turnout gear.

Approximately 100 firefighters suffer fatal injuries annually and tens of thousands receive nonfatal injuries. Many of these injuries require medical attention and restricted activity but may be preventable. This study was designed to elucidate etiology, circumstances, and patterns of firefighter burn injury so that further prevention strategies can be designed. In particular, modification of protective equipment, or turnout gear, is one potential strategy to prevent burn injury. An Institutional Review Board-approved retrospective review was conducted with records of firefighters treated for

Multisource surveillance system for work-related burns.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to develop a multisource surveillance system for work-related burns. METHODS: For 2009, records about work-related burns were obtained from Michigan's 134 hospitals, the Workers' Compensation Agency, the state's sole Poison Control Center, and death certificates. Companies where the most severe burns occurred were referred to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. RESULTS: There were 1461 work-related burns in 2009. Sixty-six percent of the burns were reported in male workers and 85.3% in whites. One third of the individuals sustained bur

Treatment of severe burn with DermACELL(®), an acellular dermal matrix.

For treatment of skin burn injuries, there exist several methods of treatment related to tissue regeneration, including the use of autograft skin and cryopreserved skin. However, each method has drawbacks. An alternative method for tissue regeneration is allograft acellular dermal matrix, with potential as a biocompatible scaffold for new tissue growth. One recently produced material of this type is DermACELL(®), which was used in this case presentation for treating a scar resulting from second- and third-degree burns in a 33-year-old female patient. The patient presented with significant hype

[Acute carpal tunnel syndrome secondary to prolonged pressure on the wrist during enolic coma].

We report a case of acute carpal tunnel syndrome caused by prolonged compression. A 40-year-old man was admitted for an acute carpal tunnel syndrome secondary to direct compression of the wrist which was blocked in supination under his thorax for ten hours during a period of alcoholic coma. Total sensorial anesthesia of the median nerve territory was noted. The emergency procedure consisted in simple opening of the carpal tunnel without nerve exploration due to the risk of bacterial contamination resulting from skin lesions, devascularization and postoperative fibrosis. Initially, the skin on

Fist position for skin grafting on the dorsal hand: II. Clinical use in deep burns and burn scar contractures.

The fundamental problem in all types of hand burns is a loss of skin and subsequent deformities. The goal of skin grafting on the dorsal hand is to graft a sufficient amount of skin, as much as the original amount, and to restore normal hand function without secondary deformities. The safe, or Michigan, position commonly has been used for immobilizing the hand. However, this position is to protect hand function rather than to provide for adequate skin grafting. This institution has developed a new hand position (the fist position) for grafting the greatest amount of skin on the dorsal side of
