Long-term Functional Outcomes Following Surgical Management of Corrosive Strictures of the Esophagus with Colon Conduit.

BACKGROUND: Corrosive ingestion leads to severe esophageal injury, often resulting in long-segment strictures requiring surgical reconstruction. When the stomach is unsuitable, colonic interposition (coloplasty) serves as an effective alternative. However, long-term functional outcomes and conduit-related complications remain underreported. AIM: The aim is to evaluate the long-term functional outcomes and complications of colon conduit following surgical management of corrosive esophageal strictures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective observational study was conducted at the Departmen

Duodenoesophageal fistula as a rare complication following emergency total gastrectomy for caustic injury.

Duodenoesophageal fistula (DEF) has not been previously reported. We present a case of DEF connecting the duodenal stump and the intra-abdominal esophageal stump following an emergency total gastrectomy without reconstruction due to caustic injury. Additionally, we describe our experience with one-stage surgical management of the fistula, along with digestive tract reconstruction. The patient underwent emergency surgery approximately 6 months prior at another hospital and was subsequently referred to our center for esophageal reconstruction. Preoperative investigations revealed the presence of

Profiling cases of button battery ingestion using Canadian and British Columbia poison centre data.

Ingestion of button batteries poses an acute life-threatening injury risk, particularly for small children. The Canadian Surveillance System for Poison Information reported 1021 single-substance button-battery ingestion cases from 2020 to 2023, and the British Columbia Drug and Poison Information Centre (DPIC) managed 548 unintentional ingestion cases from 2013 to 2023. Nearly all the DPIC cases required hospital admission for X-ray imaging, and seven patients required surgical removal of the battery from the esophagus. Our findings support developing product warning labels and enforcing child

A Hydrophilic Underwater Tissue Adhesive With Interfacial Conformity and Viscoelastic Displacement.

Adhesives that exhibit strong adhesion in wet and underwater environments are valuable in many biomedical applications. However, the presence of water substantially hinders contact between adhesives and substrates, leading to adhesion failure. In this study, a hydrophilic underwater adhesive (HUA) that can instantly adhere to wet and underwater tissues was constructed using a step-by-step photocrosslinking strategy to adjust hydrogel viscoelasticity. The HUA synergistically combined two core functional layers: adaptive fitting with interface morphology (i.e. "interface conformal") and the remo

Endoscopic puncture and recanalization in a child with corrosive esophageal stenosis and atresia: case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Corrosive esophageal stenosis and atresia represent severe late complications of caustic alkali ingestion, often leading to discontinuity of the esophagus and loss of oral feeding capability. While traditional surgical reconstruction is highly invasive and carries significant morbidity, endoscopic minimally invasive recanalization may represent a potential alternative in highly specific scenarios. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of an 11-year-old boy who developed long-segment esophageal stenosis and complete atresia following accidental alkali ingestion. Successful esophageal

Early Tracheoesophageal Fistula Following Tracheostomy in Severe Facial Burn with Inhalation Injury.

Tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) is a rare but devastating complication of mechanical ventilation and tracheostomy, classically described as a late sequela of prolonged airway instrumentation. Patients with severe burn injury and inhalation injury represent a uniquely vulnerable population due to airway mucosal ischemia, thermal injury, and impaired tissue healing. We report a case of fulminant posterior tracheal wall failure with early TEF formation occurring within days of tracheostomy in a 75-year-old patient with extensive full-thickness facial burns following thermal inhalation injury from

CLINICAL EFFECTIVENESS OF TRADITIONAL TREATMENT METHODS FOR GRADE III CHEMICAL ESOPHAGEAL BURNS IN CHILDREN.

INTRODUCTION: Chemical esophageal burns in children, especially grade III injuries, frequently lead to cicatricial strictures, persistent dysphagia, and prolonged hospitalization, creating a high risk of complications and disability. Traditional dilation methods (blind bougienage and gastrostomy with string-guided bougienage) remain widely used; however, they are associated with limited effectiveness and a risk of perforation. This study aimed to evaluate real-world outcomes of these traditional approaches and to define their main clinical limitations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective a

Long-term Outcomes of Esophageal Replacement in Children: A Multicenter Study by the Indian Association of Pediatric Surgeons.

INTRODUCTION: Esophageal replacement (ER) remains a challenging but essential reconstructive procedure in pediatric surgery when the native esophagus cannot be preserved, most often in long-gap esophageal atresia (EA) and corrosive strictures. Data from India are limited, with most reports representing single-center experiences. This multicenter study by the Indian Association of Pediatric Surgeons (IAPS) aimed to analyze national patterns, outcomes, and long-term results of pediatric ER. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective, multicenter observational study was conducted across eight IAPS-a

GUIDEWIRE-ASSISTED ESOPHAGEAL BOUGIENAGE IN SEVERE CHEMICAL BURNS IN CHILDREN: CLINICAL EFFECTIVENESS OF THE DEVELOPED METHOD.

BACKGROUND: Corrosive esophageal burns in children remain a clinically important problem because they frequently result in cicatricial strictures, persistent dysphagia, nutritional impairment, and the need for staged treatment. The greatest challenges occur in severe (grade III) injuries, where conventional blind bougienage is performed without visual control and carries a risk of additional esophageal trauma. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness and safety of endoscopically controlled guidewire-assisted bougienage with traditional treatment approaches in children with cicatricial strictur
