INTRODUCTION: Accidental ingestion of caustic agents poses a significant concern in pediatric emergency departments globally. It is a growing public health concern in low-to-middle income countries, which often lack comprehensive data reporting. This study examines high doses of corticosteroid treatment outcomes of caustic ingestion injuries in Syrian pediatric patients, addressing clinical features, and associated variables.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: A retrospective observational study was conducted at University Pediatric Hospital from January 2016 to January 2019. Medical records were reviewe

BACKGROUND: At present, there is no unified and effective treatment for extreme corrosive esophageal stenosis (CES) with esophagotracheal fistula (ETF). This case had extreme and severe esophageal stenosis (ES) and ETF after ingesting an enzyme-based chemical detergent, resulting in a serious pulmonary infection and severe malnutrition. Upper gastrointestinal imaging showed that he had an ETF, and endoscopy showed that he had extreme and severe esophageal stricture. This case was complex and difficult to treat. According to the domestic and foreign literature, there is no universal treatment t

BACKGROUND: Particulate matter exposure (PM) is a cause of aerodigestive disease globally. The destruction of the World Trade Center (WTC) exposed fifirst responders and inhabitants of New York City to WTC-PM and caused obstructive airways disease (OAD), gastroesophageal Refux disease (GERD) and Barrett's Esophagus (BE). GERD not only diminishes health-related quality of life but also gives rise to complications that extend beyond the scope of BE. GERD can incite or exacerbate allergies, sinusitis, bronchitis, and asthma. Disease features of the aerodigestive axis can overlap, often necessitat

BACKGROUND: Caustic ingestion is associated with long-term sequelae like esophageal stricture, gastric cicatrization, and long-term risk of dysplasia or even carcinoma. However, only a few small studies have explored histopathological aspects of caustic-induced esophageal/gastric injury.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated specimens of patients undergoing surgery due to caustic ingestion-related complications from 2008 to 2020. Pathological examination was conducted by two independent gastro-pathologists to evaluate the extent and depth of the caustic injury, presence or absen

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis of eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases is largely based on mucosal eosinophil counts, but thresholds and normal ranges beyond the esophagus are debated, calling for much-needed methodological standardization. We aimed to develop a standardized workflow for duodenal cell quantification and estimate duodenal eosinophil and mast cell numbers in healthy controls.
METHODS: Software-based histological cell quantification using free-sized or fixed-sized regions was developed and applied to digitized hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained slides from 58 individuals (health

Ingestion of a corrosive substance may cause corrosive esophagitis. Curcumin has anti-inflammatory and mucosal protective effects. In this study, the effects of curcumin on the acute phase of corrosive esophagitis were investigated. Twenty-seven Wistar Albino rats were divided into four groups; sham (group I), control (group II), and experiment groups (group III, 100 mg/kg curcumin; group IV, 200 mg/kg curcumin). Forty percent sodium hydroxide solution was used to erode the esophagi of rats in groups other than the sham group. Curcumin was applied to animals in the experiment groups 10 min aft

BACKGROUND: Caustic ingestions are relatively uncommon, but remain a significant source of morbidity. Patients with caustic injury often undergo an urgent EGD, although it is not clear if an EGD is routinely needed in an asymptomatic patient. The study has two primary objectives; 1) to determine the utility of routine EGD in asymptomatic suicidal caustic ingestions; 2) to determine if asymptomatic unintentional acidic ingestions can be managed with observation alone, similar to basic ingestions.
METHODS: This retrospective study, which took place at 14 hospitals in three countries evaluated a

INTRODUCTION: Esophageal chemical burns often occur through accidental or intentional oral consumption of chemical agents and lead to severe complications such as esophageal stricture, acute perforation, and even death. Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma is a squamous epithelium tumor that lines the normal esophagus. Additionally, adenocarcinomas are tumors located at the interface between the distal esophagus and the proximal gastric and divided into esophageal adenocarcinoma and gastric-cardia adenocarcinoma. Various conditions, such as chemical burns, are considered risk factors in the dise

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Button battery ingestion has been a common condition encountered by otorhinolaryngologists. Impaction in the esophagus can lead to serious and fatal complications such as tracheoesophageal fistula. Management involves a multidisciplinary team and varies from supportive therapy to surgical intervention.
ABSTRACT: Ingestion of button batteries has been seen with increasing frequency over the past decade. In several small numbers of reported cases, their impaction in the esophagus has led to severe, sometimes fatal, complications. The management of these cases has varied fr

INTRODUCTION: Caustic ingestion almost occurs accidentally in children and mostly intentionally in adults. The ingestion of caustic substances can cause various degrees of damage to the gastrointestinal tract. Depending on the severity of the injury, surgery may be a part of the treatment plan.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 32-year-old man was referred to our hospital after swallowing drain cleaner. Due to evidence of peritonitis and endoscopy results, he underwent emergency surgery. During the surgery, necrotic parts, including the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, head of the pancreas, and initial pa

Benign esophageal strictures are characterized by the narrowing of the esophageal passage due to fibrotic changes. These strictures can arise from various causes, including gastroesophageal reflux disease, which leads to peptic strictures; surgical procedures causing esophageal injury, resulting in anastomotic strictures; radiation therapy, ingestion of corrosive substances, or endoscopic resection. Approximately 10% of benign esophageal strictures do not respond to conventional dilation therapy, prompting the consideration of temporary stent insertion as an alternative treatment approach. How
