Effect of castor oil on esophageal stricture in rats and expression of ST-2, neopterin proteins in corrosive burn model.

Corrosive esophageal burn (CEB) is a disease with high mortality and morbidity rates. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of castor oil, in preventing stricture development at the experimental CEB model. In addition to studying standard histopathological damage data, neopterin, IL-33, and ST-2 proteins were also studied for the first time. Fifty Wistar-Albino rats were divided into randomized 5 groups. [Sham group (G1) (n:10), Control group (G2) (n:10), Early Stage Topical Application group (G3)(n:10), Late Stage Topical Application group (G4) (n:10), Oral Application group (G5

Fatal Zargar grade 3b corrosive injury after hydrochloric acid ingestion: A case report.

RATIONALE: Caustic substance ingestion is an emergency and life-threatening condition as it leads to tissue damage, acidosis, and multiorgan failure. This study presents a case report of hydrochloric acid ingestion and notably dark-red urine output due to acute tubular necrosis. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 59-year-old male presented with attempted suicide by ingesting 500 mL of hydrochloric acid (37%), and complained of severe abdominal pain and shortness of breath. Upon arrival, his vital signs showed a temperature of 34.3°C, blood pressure of 104/77 mm Hg, a pulse rate of 135 beats per minute, and

Acute Fluoride Toxicity Due to Intentional Ingestion of Hydrofluoric Acid Commercial Product.

Hydrofluoric (HF) acid, an irritating and corrosive acid, is commonly found in cleaning supplies. Fatal HF acid ingestion has been documented, although relatively rare. We report a case of acute fluoride toxicity suicide due to the ingestion of a commercial product containing HF acid and ammonium bifluoride. To our knowledge, this is the first to describe the associated gastrointestinal histopathology in detail.A 56-year-old woman was found deceased near a rust remover product and a notebook containing suicide methods via chemical ingestion. Gross autopsy findings included laryngeal mucosal pe

Endoscopic ultrasonography in diagnosis of chemical esophageal burn and prediction of cicatricial stenosis.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the role of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) in predicting the risk of cicatricial stenosis after chemical esophageal burn. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study included 56 patients with chemical esophageal burn grade III/IV. Primary endoscopy was performed upon admission. To estimate lesion of muscular layer of esophageal wall, we performed EUS using mini-sensor 20 MHz in 3-5 days after injury. To assess severity of chemical esophageal burn, we used the classification proposed by Volkov S.V. (1997) and supplemented by Pesnya-Prasolova E.A. (2006): grade I - catar

Severe Corrosive Injury Secondary to Chlorine Bleach Ingestion: A Case Report.

Corrosive injuries to the upper gastrointestinal tract, particularly those caused by alkaline substances, often result in more severe and deeper tissue injuries than those observed after ingestion of acidic substances. We report a case of severe corrosive injury following ingestion of chlorine bleach (200 mL), an alkaline agent. Initial endoscopic evaluation revealed severe esophageal and gastric injuries with necrosis (Zargar grade 3b), without any signs of perforation. The treatment plan included prolonged fasting with total parenteral nutrition, and enteral feeding was initiated via jejunos

Comparison of the effects of gasoline burn and chromic acid burn on different internal organs and immune functions in rats.

Burn as physical injury ranks as the fourth most prevalent trauma across the world. In this study, we aimed to compare the impact of gasoline burn and chromic acid burn on the internal organs and immune functions in rats. The results showed that the levels of methemoglobin (MHb) to total hemoglobin (Hb) as well as the Cr6+ content showed significant elevation in the chromic acid burn group relative to the gasoline burn group. HE staining was used to evaluate the histological changes in the injured tissues as well as the tissues excised from internal organs. We found that chromic acid burn-indu

Postmortem or Perimortem Injury? Presentation of an incredible court case in which flames are the protagonists of a murder.

BACKGROUND: Establishing the cause of death when analysing burnt human remains is limiting due to thermal degradation. The heat generated by high combustion degrades the bone structure, definitively hiding the perimortem trauma in most cases, which is crucial for solving a court case. CASE REPORT: In November 2019, a completely burnt corpse was found inside a car set on fire near a location in Reggio Calabria, Italy. The corpse was subsequently subjected to an initial radiodiagnostic examination and an anthropological/medico-legal investigation, in order to confirm the biological profile of t

Pediatric Esophageal Foreign Bodies and Caustic Ingestions.

Foreign body ingestions commonly occur in children aged under 6 years. While serious complications of ingestions are rare, sharp objects, caustics, multiple magnets, and button batteries can be associated with poorer outcomes including gastrointestinal (GI) obstruction, perforation, necrosis, and fistula formation. Initial workup should include history, physical examination, and plain film radiographs that will identify radiopaque objects. Removal of the foreign body is typically warranted if the object is high risk, it is located higher up in the GI tract, the patient is symptomatic, or the o

Can we predict the risk of esophageal stricture after caustic injury?

Nonoperative management of severe caustic injuries has demonstrated its feasibility, avoiding the need for emergency esogastric resection and resulting in low mortality rates. However, leaving superficial necrosis in place could increase the risk of esophageal stricture development. Data on the risk factors of esophageal stricture secondary to caustic ingestion are scarce. The aim of our study was to identify the risk factors for esophageal strictures after caustic ingestion at admission. From February 2015 to March 2021, all consecutive patients with esophageal or gastric caustic injury score

Clinical features of gastroesophageal reflux disease and erosive esophagitis: Insights from patients undergoing esophagogastroduodenoscopy in resource-limited Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common disease worldwide with varying clinical presentations and risk factors. Prevalence data for Africa is lacking, but an increasing trend is expected due to demographic and epidemiological transitions. Although endoscopic studies for general gastrointestinal disorders have shown some patients with erosive esophagitis (EE), no studies in Ethiopia have investigated the clinical characteristics, risk factors, and severity of GERD using esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). AIM: To assess the clinical features of GERD in Ethiopian patients w

[Endoscopic Treatments in Perforation or Fistula in Upper Gastrointestinal Tract].

Perforations or fistulas in the gastrointestinal tract constitute serious emergencies and are associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Such lesions, occurring in the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum, may arise from noniatrogenic causes (e.g., peptic ulcers, corrosive insults, trauma, malignant tumors) and iatrogenic causes (e.g., endoscopic procedures and surgeries). A prompt diagnosis and an appropriate management strategy are crucial for early recovery before secondary complications occur that may be induced by infection and/or chemical damage from gastric acid or bile. Analysis of Oxygen Concentration in the Oral Cavity During Intravenous Sedation with Intranasal Oxygen Administration for Dental Treatment.

PURPOSE: Intravenous sedation (IVS) with propofol (PPF) is commonly performed in dental treatment, particular in patients with dentophobia, with gag reflex, or undergoing implant surgeries, as PPF has the advantages of rapid induction and recovery. However, PPF and other intravenous sedatives may cause respiratory depression. Thus, IVS with PPF requires oxygen administration. But airway burn may occur when high-concentration oxygen is stored in the oral cavity and catches fire. For these reasons, the present study aimed to elucidate the changes in oxygen concentration (OC) under IVS with PPF a
