BACKGROUND: Corrosive ingestion leads to severe esophageal injury, often resulting in long-segment strictures requiring surgical reconstruction. When the stomach is unsuitable, colonic interposition (coloplasty) serves as an effective alternative. However, long-term functional outcomes and conduit-related complications remain underreported.
AIM: The aim is to evaluate the long-term functional outcomes and complications of colon conduit following surgical management of corrosive esophageal strictures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective observational study was conducted at the Departmen

Duodenoesophageal fistula (DEF) has not been previously reported. We present a case of DEF connecting the duodenal stump and the intra-abdominal esophageal stump following an emergency total gastrectomy without reconstruction due to caustic injury. Additionally, we describe our experience with one-stage surgical management of the fistula, along with digestive tract reconstruction. The patient underwent emergency surgery approximately 6 months prior at another hospital and was subsequently referred to our center for esophageal reconstruction. Preoperative investigations revealed the presence of

BACKGROUND: Corrosive esophageal stenosis and atresia represent severe late complications of caustic alkali ingestion, often leading to discontinuity of the esophagus and loss of oral feeding capability. While traditional surgical reconstruction is highly invasive and carries significant morbidity, endoscopic minimally invasive recanalization may represent a potential alternative in highly specific scenarios. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of an 11-year-old boy who developed long-segment esophageal stenosis and complete atresia following accidental alkali ingestion. Successful esophageal

PURPOSE: Radiographic corrosion of impacted esophageal button batteries has recently been proposed as a potential predictor of severe injury. We aimed to reproduce these findings and evaluate the association between radiographic corrosion and clinical outcomes in a pediatric population treated at a tertiary referral center. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of children under 13 years of age admitted for esophageal button battery impaction between January 2022 and December 2024. All patients underwent repeat anteroposterior and lateral chest radiography on admission. Corrosion was

INTRODUCTION: Esophageal replacement (ER) remains a challenging but essential reconstructive procedure in pediatric surgery when the native esophagus cannot be preserved, most often in long-gap esophageal atresia (EA) and corrosive strictures. Data from India are limited, with most reports representing single-center experiences. This multicenter study by the Indian Association of Pediatric Surgeons (IAPS) aimed to analyze national patterns, outcomes, and long-term results of pediatric ER.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective, multicenter observational study was conducted across eight IAPS-a

BACKGROUND: Corrosive esophageal burns in children remain a clinically important problem because they frequently result in cicatricial strictures, persistent dysphagia, nutritional impairment, and the need for staged treatment. The greatest challenges occur in severe (grade III) injuries, where conventional blind bougienage is performed without visual control and carries a risk of additional esophageal trauma.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness and safety of endoscopically controlled guidewire-assisted bougienage with traditional treatment approaches in children with cicatricial strictur

OBJECTIVES: The ability to predict the severity of corrosive injury in patients remains challenging. This study aims to explore the potential of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) as novel diagnostic markers to predict the severity of esophageal injury following corrosive substance ingestion (CSI).
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort analysis on patients with CSI. Demographic data, complete blood counts, and endoscopic findings were collected and analyzed. Esophageal injuries were graded using Zargar's classification. The NLR and MLR w

Esophageal emergencies include a heterogeneous group of conditions that, if not promptly recognized and treated, may progress rapidly to life-threatening complications including mediastinitis, sepsis, and multiorgan failure. The clinical presentation is typically non-specific, including symptoms such as chest pain, dysphagia, odynophagia, and dyspnea, which frequently overlap with more common cardiopulmonary pathologies, making the clinical diagnosis challenging. Imaging therefore occupies a central position in the diagnostic pathway. While fluoroscopic contrast esophagography has historically

BACKGROUND: Refractory caustic esophageal stricture (RCES) is a highly morbid condition. Prevention, rather than treatment, remains the ultimate goal. During the acute phase of injury, we have observed abundant fibrinous adhesions on the luminal surface of the injured esophagus, leading to luminal obliteration. We hypothesize that maintaining luminal patency during this period using our novel technique-Repeated Endoscopy with Intraluminal Fibrinous adhesioLysis of the Esophagus (RIFLE)-is crucial for successful subsequent esophageal dilation and for reducing the prevalence of RCES.
METHODS: P

Gastric outlet obstruction (GOO) is a late complication of corrosive ingestion, particularly in children. Although corrosive injuries primarily affect the esophagus, involvement of the pyloric antrum with progressive stenosis is also common. Optimal surgical management remains debated, and evidence supporting the use of Billroth 1 reconstruction continues to evolve. The study reviews eight patients who developed corrosive acid-induced GOO and underwent surgical intervention. All patients were evaluated clinically and radiologically to assess the severity of obstruction. The operative procedure

BACKGROUND: Button batteries are a common household item that are, unfortunately, attractive to young children. If ingested, they are corrosive and potentially fatal. Button battery ingestion is frequently unwitnessed, delaying the diagnosis. In the USA, approximately 6,000 accidental ingestions occur annually (2.2 deaths per year over a decade on average). Community awareness of this danger appears to be low.
METHODS: We conducted a 22-question online questionnaire-based study to assess and raise awareness of this exceptional childhood risk.
RESULTS: A total of 561 survey responses were ana

BACKGROUND: Corrosive esophageal injury frequently results in esophageal stricture requiring repeated endoscopic dilatation and substantial healthcare expenditure. This study evaluated the cost-effectiveness of omeprazole plus standard treatment compared with standard treatment alone for preventing esophageal stricture in adult patients with Zargar grade 2b and 3a corrosive esophageal injuries.
METHODS: A trial-based economic evaluation was conducted alongside a randomized controlled trial from the healthcare provider and patient perspectives. Twenty patients were randomized to receive either

BACKGROUND: Esophageal stricture is the most frequent caustic ingestion sequela, leading to dysphagia and malnutrition. The colon is the most commonly used graft for esophageal reconstruction. The most dreadful early complication of colonic interposition is leakage of cervical esophagocolic anastomosis, which can be caused by several factors. Tension pneumothorax has never been reported in the medical literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 5 year-old Black African male patient with retrosternal pain and dysphagia was admitted to the department of surgery. The patient had a history of accidental cau
