Pyloric stenosis following hydrochloric acid-based bathroom cleaner ingestion in a toddler.

Accidental ingestion of corrosive household substances can lead to serious injuries in young children. While damage to the oesophagus is most common, injuries affecting the stomach, especially the pylorus, are rare and can be easily missed. We describe a toddler who developed persistent vomiting after swallowing a hydrochloric acid-based bathroom cleaner. Investigations revealed complete blockage at the gastric outlet due to scarring. She was successfully treated with surgery. This case highlights the importance of early recognition and timely intervention, especially when the child continues

Hampi Tariki Kit: thin-layer chromatography for semiquantitative screening of solid oral medicines in Peru.

INTRODUCTION: Essential precondition for the development of cervical cancer is a persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The majority - approximately 70% - of cervical carcinomas is caused by two high-risk HPV types (16 and 18). Recently, two vaccines have been approved to the German market with the potential to induce protection against HPV 16 and HPV 18 among additional low-risk virus types. OBJECTIVES: To analyse whether HPV vaccination is effective with regard to the reduction of cervical cancer and precursors of cervical carcinoma (CIN), respectively? Does HPV vaccination repres

A rare case of suicide by ingestion of muriatic acid: analysis of the medico-legal evidences.

Caustic substances are highly corrosive and dangerous, causing protein denaturation and tissue necrosis by altering pH upon contact. Common examples include muriatic acid, caustic soda, and ammonia. This case study details a 44-year-old man who ingested muriatic acid in a suicide attempt, leading to widespread esophageal and gastric ulcerations, tissue necrosis, pulmonary consolidations, and blood-stream infections (Klebsiella Pneumoniae, Acinetobacter Baumanii complex). Despite medical interventions, the patient died. An autopsy was performed and it revealed extensive multi-organ hemorrhages

Iron Mettle: Unveiling an Unusual Incidental Case Report of Esophageal Ulcer.

INTRODUCTION: Erosive damage to the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract caused by therapeutic oral iron supplements is relatively uncommon. While such injuries are frequently linked to overdoses of oral iron, they can also occur with doses within the standard therapeutic range. Cases have highlighted GI complications caused by iron, predominantly involving the stomach and sometimes the esophagus. During absorption, iron is initially processed as ferrous iron, which, when bound to proteins, can lead to cellular injury. Additionally, ferric iron exerts a corrosive effect on the GI mucosa and disru

Acute Esophageal Necrosis Associated with Alcoholic Ketoacidosis A Case Report.

Acute esophageal necrosis (AEN) is a rare condition associated with ischemia of the esophagus, corrosive injury by gastric fluids and reduced mucosal defense. It is also referred to as "Black Esophagus" or "Gurvit's syndrome". Its clinical presentation is most notable for upper gastrointestinal bleeding with signs and symptoms such as abdominal or epigastric pain, nausea, vomiting, dysphagia and fever. AEN is diagnosed via esophagogastroduodenoscopy, where the cardinal finding is a circumferential black discoloration of the esophagus, usually most pronounced in the distal esophagus. The lesion

The role of computed tomography and endoscopy in caustic esophageal injury in adults: a systematic review.

Caustic esophageal injury can cause severe morbidity and mortality. Despite the need for emergent treatment, individual experience in diagnosis and management can be limited. Computed tomography (CT) has emerged as a promising non-invasive modality for assessing injury severity, but the clinical utility of both CT and endoscopy should be investigated. A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. A comprehensive search of the PubMed database identified relevant articles published from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2023. Inclusion criteria encompassed studies investigating th

Esophageal advancement jejunoplasty (JAE) in the treatment of cervical esophageal strictures.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical esophageal stenosis is a complex surgical problem when endoscopic treatment fails. The distance between the stenosis and the dental arch (AD) determines the need for a longer flap, with an increased risk of ischemia. Our group proposed the use of an esophageal advancement jejunoplasty (JAE) in patients with esophageal stenosis less than 17 cm from the AD to "lengthen" the residual esophagus and, in a second stage, complete the reconstruction of digestive transit with a gastroplasty or coloplasty. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Descriptive and retrospective analysis of a prospecti

Role of Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) in Predicting Stricture Formation Following Caustic Injury.

BACKGROUND: Caustic ingestion remains a significant public health concern, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, and often results in long-term complications such as esophageal strictures. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is widely used for grading mucosal injury (Zargar classification) but cannot assess wall depth. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) allows visualization of transmural involvement, yet its prognostic role in caustic injuries is underexplored. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 63 adults with confirmed caustic ingestion who underwent both EGD and EUS within 24

A Word of Caution With Esophageal Replacement for Corrosive Esophageal Injury: A Case Report.

Corrosive ingestion remains a common problem in developing countries such as India due to the lack of strict laws that regulate the sale of caustics. Corrosives can damage any segment of the gastrointestinal tract. The chronic phase of corrosive injuries may result in several complications, with the most common among them being stricture. These chronic sequelae are frequently managed by esophageal replacement. Due to the associated injury to the larynx and the trachea, the airway management is complicated in the late phase when fibrosis and strictures distort the anatomy. We present a case of
