Hydrofluoric (HF) acid, an irritating and corrosive acid, is commonly found in cleaning supplies. Fatal HF acid ingestion has been documented, although relatively rare. We report a case of acute fluoride toxicity suicide due to the ingestion of a commercial product containing HF acid and ammonium bifluoride. To our knowledge, this is the first to describe the associated gastrointestinal histopathology in detail.A 56-year-old woman was found deceased near a rust remover product and a notebook containing suicide methods via chemical ingestion. Gross autopsy findings included laryngeal mucosal pe

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the role of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) in predicting the risk of cicatricial stenosis after chemical esophageal burn.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study included 56 patients with chemical esophageal burn grade III/IV. Primary endoscopy was performed upon admission. To estimate lesion of muscular layer of esophageal wall, we performed EUS using mini-sensor 20 MHz in 3-5 days after injury. To assess severity of chemical esophageal burn, we used the classification proposed by Volkov S.V. (1997) and supplemented by Pesnya-Prasolova E.A. (2006): grade I - catar

Corrosive injuries to the upper gastrointestinal tract, particularly those caused by alkaline substances, often result in more severe and deeper tissue injuries than those observed after ingestion of acidic substances. We report a case of severe corrosive injury following ingestion of chlorine bleach (200 mL), an alkaline agent. Initial endoscopic evaluation revealed severe esophageal and gastric injuries with necrosis (Zargar grade 3b), without any signs of perforation. The treatment plan included prolonged fasting with total parenteral nutrition, and enteral feeding was initiated via jejunos

Foreign body ingestions commonly occur in children aged under 6 years. While serious complications of ingestions are rare, sharp objects, caustics, multiple magnets, and button batteries can be associated with poorer outcomes including gastrointestinal (GI) obstruction, perforation, necrosis, and fistula formation. Initial workup should include history, physical examination, and plain film radiographs that will identify radiopaque objects. Removal of the foreign body is typically warranted if the object is high risk, it is located higher up in the GI tract, the patient is symptomatic, or the o

Nonoperative management of severe caustic injuries has demonstrated its feasibility, avoiding the need for emergency esogastric resection and resulting in low mortality rates. However, leaving superficial necrosis in place could increase the risk of esophageal stricture development. Data on the risk factors of esophageal stricture secondary to caustic ingestion are scarce. The aim of our study was to identify the risk factors for esophageal strictures after caustic ingestion at admission. From February 2015 to March 2021, all consecutive patients with esophageal or gastric caustic injury score

Perforations or fistulas in the gastrointestinal tract constitute serious emergencies and are associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Such lesions, occurring in the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum, may arise from noniatrogenic causes (e.g., peptic ulcers, corrosive insults, trauma, malignant tumors) and iatrogenic causes (e.g., endoscopic procedures and surgeries). A prompt diagnosis and an appropriate management strategy are crucial for early recovery before secondary complications occur that may be induced by infection and/or chemical damage from gastric acid or bile. BACKGROUND: Alteration in the strain properties of the Achilles tendon may lead to adaptations such as pathological stiffening. Stiff tendons have reduced adaptive ability, which may increase the risk for developing tendinopathy. Strain can be measured using musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging. A two-probe ultrasound procedure may reduce the measurement error associated with a one-probe procedure. However, the reliability of the two-probe procedure has not been established. This study aimed to determine the within-session intra- and inter-rater reliability and between-session reliability of a t

PURPOSE: Foreign body (FB) ingestion in children has varied presentation. When unwitnessed, it poses therapeutic and diagnostic challenges especially in the presence of pre-existing anatomical pathology. We aim to analyze the clinical course, management, and outcome of children with impacted esophageal FBs.
METHODS: Retrospective chart review (Jan 2000-Feb 2018) recruiting children with impacted esophageal FBs. FBs in cricopharynx and those that moved to stomach were excluded. Investigations/management were based on underlying anatomical pathology, duration of impaction, and difficult FBs. Cl

BACKGROUND: Esophageal injury after caustic ingestion can vary in severity and may result in significant long-term morbidity due to stricture development. The optimal management remains unknown. We aim to determine the incidence of esophageal stricture due to caustic ingestion and quantify current procedural and operative management strategies.
METHODS: The Pediatric Health Information System (PHIS) was utilized to identify patients 0-18 years old who experienced caustic ingestion from January 2007-September 2015 and developed subsequent esophageal stricture until December 2021. Post-injury p

BACKGROUND: This study aims to compare methylprednisolone frequently used in the therapeutic practices of corrosive esophagus burns, sucralfate, a protective material of mucosal surfaces, and alpha lipoic acid, the most potent antioxidant in a rat model.
METHODS: A total of 40 female Sprague-Dawley rats were used in this study. The rats were equally divided into control, alpha lipoic acid, methylprednisolone, and sucralfate groups (n=10). A corrosive esophagus burn was created by using 10% pH:12 sodium hydroxide. No treatment was applied to the control group, and each group was given their ow

OBJECTIVES: Computed tomography has become a critical component in evaluating adult patients with acute caustic ingestions and an alternative to endoscopy for detecting transmural gastrointestinal necrosis. This study assessed the performance and reliability of computed tomography findings of transmural gastrointestinal necrosis, given that the presence of the disease potentially signifies the need for surgery.
METHODS: A retrospective database search was performed to identify consecutive adult patients with acute caustic ingestions who had computed tomography with endoscopy or surgery within

BACKGROUND: Caustic substance ingestion is a high-risk medical emergency associated with high mortality and morbidity. To date, there are several treatment options with no standard method of care.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a corrosive agent ingestion complicated with third-degree burns and severe stenosis of the esophagus and gastric outlet. After failure of conservative treatment, the patient underwent jejunostomy placement for nutritional support followed by transhiatal esophagectomy with gastric pull-up and intra-thoracic Roux-en-Y gastroenterostomy with good outcomes. An aerodigestive foreign body injury in the throat is an otorhinolaryngology (ORL) emergency. Button batteries and coins are the most common foreign body aspirations or ingestions among the paediatric population. An impacted button battery in the aerodigestive tract is a surgical emergency, requiring urgent removal to prevent complications arising from the corrosive nature of the button battery. We report two cases that were brought in with a history of foreign body ingestion. Both neck radiographs showed a double-ring opaque shadow. The first child had a button battery eroding into his oesoph

Esophageal stricture is a narrowing of the esophageal lumen which is often characterized by impaired swallowing or dysphagia. It can be induced by inflammation, fibrosis or neoplasia which damages the mucosa and/or submucosa of the esophagus. Corrosive substance ingestion is one of the major causes of esophageal stricture, particularly in children and young adults. For instance, accidental ingestion or attempted suicide with corrosive household products is not uncommon. Gasoline is a liquid mixture of aliphatic hydrocarbons derived from the fractional distillation of petroleum, which is then c

The authors present ultrasonography-assisted endoscopic diagnosis of chemical burn of the esophagus. This method early predicted decompensated cicatricial stenosis of the esophagus that was valuable to determine treatment strategy. Preventive mini-invasive endoscopic percutaneous gastrostomy provided adequate enteral nutrition in a patient with decompensated esophageal stenosis before reconstructive surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Corrosive ingestion forms serious problem, with various outcomes depending on the time of diagnosis and treatment. We report here a case with rare and dangerous complications.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A two-year-old girl came to our hospital, complaining of solids' dysphagia. Retrieving her medical history showed that she had ingested a corrosive liquid accidentally. Without knowing the nature of the ingested agent, the local doctor removed it, using nasal gastric tube. This procedure induced vomiting, which in turn led to more damage. She stayed in the area's hospital for 40 days
