The effect of blood urea nitrogen (BUN)/albumin ratio in evaluating mortality in pediatric burn patients with 20% or greater total body surface area involvement.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to evaluate the predictive value of the blood urea nitrogen (BUN)/albumin ratio for in-hospital mortality in pediatric burn patients with a total body surface area (TBSA) of 20% or greater and to compare its performance with established scoring systems, namely the Abbreviated Burn Severity Index (ABSI) and the Pediatric Baux Score (P-Baux). METHODS: Patients hospitalized with burns involving 20% or greater TBSA in our pediatric burn unit between 2018 and 2023 were reviewed retrospectively. Patients were analyzed for demographic information, basic clinical data, cau

Association of left ventricular outflow tract velocity-time integral with severity of pulmonary embolism in patients treated with catheter-directed therapies.

Pulmonary embolism is a leading cause of cardiovascular death. Given the increased use of catheter directed therapies (CDT), tools for patient selection have become more impactful today. Several parameters have been used to identify vulnerable patients. These include demographic, physical, imaging and laboratory findings which can be used collectively to risk stratify patients. Left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) velocity time index (VTI) is not incorporated in these calculators, but data suggests it is effective in prognostication. Using a retrospective review, we assessed 105 consecutive p

Associations between tattooed body surface area and maladaptive personality traits in a community sample.

Evidence for personality differences between tattooed and non-tattooed adults is mixed. Assessing dimensional maladaptive traits may help clarify these associations. A community sample of adults in Cyprus (N = 280; M = 28.0, SD = 9.5; range 18 to 64) completed the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 Brief Form Adult (PID-5-BF) and a Tattoo Coverage Tool estimating the percentage of body surface area tattooed (tBSA). Analyses included t-tests, correlations, and hierarchical regressions controlling for age, sex, and socioeconomic status. More than half (58.6%) of the participants reported having at

Infectious Complications in Burn Patients: A 10-Year Multicenter Study in the Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX) Hospital Network.

BACKGROUND: Infectious complications are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in burn patients, particularly in tertiary care centers treating complex cases. The loss of the skin barrier, systemic inflammatory response, and secondary immunosuppression increase susceptibility to colonization, sepsis, and multidrug-resistant infections. Understanding the epidemiology and timing of these complications is critical to optimize prevention and treatment strategies. However, multicenter data describing long-term infection patterns and antimicrobial resistance in burn patients from Latin American

Oxygen supply capacity across early-life stages in common snook Centropomus undecimalis.

Estuaries supply a critical habitat to many ecologically and commercially valuable fish species, providing safety and food availability during the larval and juvenile stages. However, dissolved oxygen is naturally dynamic in these systems, varying from complete anoxia to hyperoxia. In some species, the larval stage may be particularly vulnerable to low-oxygen stress due to incomplete development of oxygen transport systems, high metabolic cost associated with early feeding and a narrow aerobic scope to support additional activity. Increasing seawater temperatures further increase oxygen demand

V-A ECMO for refractory malignant arrhythmia and cardiogenic shock following acute hydrofluoric acid burns: a case report and pathophysiology review.

BACKGROUND: Hydrofluoric acid (HF) exposure causes severe systemic toxicity through fluoride ion-mediated electrolyte disturbances, leading to life-threatening cardiovascular complications. While extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been reported for respiratory failure in HF poisoning, its use for refractory malignant arrhythmias and cardiogenic shock remains extremely rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year-old male worker sustained extensive HF burns (30% of total body surface area) following an industrial accident. Despite aggressive electrolyte correction and blood purification, he

Microbial interactions mediate the fairy ring type effects on alpine meadow plant communities on the Tibetan plateau.

The Fairy ring (FR) is a circular formation created by the mycelium of the FR fungus during its dynamic proliferation in the soil. FRs were categorized into three types based on their varying effects on adjacent plants. Type I FRs (T1) cause extensive damage with wilting and necrosis, Type II FRs (T2) promote growth with dark-green zones, and Type III FRs (T3) feature fruiting bodies with minimal impact on vegetation. T2 FR often display conspicuous growth-promoting zones and thus are studied more frequently than other types. Here we compare three FR types-Agrocybe sp. (T1), Agaricus campestri

Breast Implant Illness Symptom Resolution Over 24 Months After Explantation: A Prospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Breast implant illness (BII) is an emerging but poorly defined clinical entity characterized by a constellation of systemic symptoms. While explantation is increasingly reported to improve outcomes, the temporal dynamics of symptom recovery remain insufficiently studied. METHODS: We conducted a prospective single-center observational study of 20 women undergoing breast implant removal for suspected BII. Symptoms were categorized into four clusters-musculoskeletal, neurocognitive, constitutional, and dermatologic-and assessed at baseline and up to 24 months postoperatively using nu

Small prey fight back: post-capture defences shape prey-predator size relationships.

Size relationships between prey and predators are a key topic in ecology. A positive correlation often exists between the sizes of prey and predators. Although predators can consume much smaller prey, some preferentially target larger prey and avoid very small ones. Prey size preferences can be shaped by prey quality, alternative prey availability, and handling costs. Additionally, the defensive behaviour of small prey may prevent ingestion after capture, although this hypothesis has not been experimentally tested. In this study, I observed the behavioural responses of the predatory fish Silur

Effects of chronic exposure to environmentally realistic microplastics on Daphnia magna: importance of particle size and morphology and implications for risk assessments.

Most ecotoxicity research with microplastics (MPs) in laboratories uses primary MPs, such as plastic microbeads. The present study aimed to determine the effects of three environmentally representative MPs: nylon and Kevlar microfibers and polystyrene cup fragments on Daphnia magna. The organisms were exposed to each MP type at five test concentrations (0.0064, 0.064, 0.25, 2.5, and 25 mg/L) for 21 days to investigate MP uptake and effects on survivorship, growth, and reproduction. Daphnia magna ingested all MP types and the uptake concentration increased logarithmically with exposure concentr

Assessing health in aging male and female mice: does cardiac function dictate frailty or physical resilience?

As the global population over age 65 is projected to triple by 2050, understanding the physiological mechanisms of aging and the role of sex as a biological variable is critical. Research conducted on old mice demonstrates that age-related cardiac dysfunction is differentially linked to markers of frailty and resilience in a sex-dependent manner. We assessed post-anesthesia recovery time, wire hanging test, and a deficit accumulation-based frailty index as markers of whole-body frailty and resilience, and correlated these variables with cardiac parameters obtained by echocardiography and Doppl

Fluorescent bionanosensor for picomolar detection of biomarkers in fluids.

Fast and simple detection of diseases at their early stage and clinical monitoring of healing progress directly from body fluids, namely from urine, is a hot topic in modern personalized medicine. Functionalized nanofibers seem to be an ideal solution for the construction of specific and highly selective detection systems and microfluidic tools due to their extremely high ratio between their surface and volume, and also tunable sensitivity. The aim of this study is development of biosensors based on functionalized nanofibers leading to signal enhancement which would enable fluorescence detecti

Life cycle environmental impact of novel radiative thermal management textiles in China.

New types of textiles are being developed to meet requirements such as adjusting body surface temperature according to changes in the surrounding environment. However, these new textiles can have a significantly different impact on the environment throughout their entire lifecycle from cradle to gate compared to traditional textiles due to their complex composition. Therefore, sustainability should be taken into consideration in the development of textiles in addition to their performance. This study employs life cycle assessment to evaluate the system boundary from cradle to gate and analyzes

Climate-driven population dynamics, growth, and phenology of the moon jellyfish Aurelia coerulea in the Mediterranean thau lagoon.

Global warming is reshaping marine ecosystems by altering species distributions, trophic interactions, and the timing of life-cycle events. Gelatinous zooplankton, such as jellyfish, are key players in these dynamics, yet long-term field records remain rare, limiting our ability to assess their ecological responses to climate change. Here, we analyzed a 13-year time series (2010-2023, excluding 2012) of Aurelia coerulea (von Lendenfeld, 1884) in Thau Lagoon, a French Mediterranean coastal ecosystem, based on bi-monthly sampling. Abundance and body size were quantified for both ephyra and medus

Low thermal inertia of carbonaceous asteroid Bennu driven by cracks observed in returned samples.

Thermal inertia is used to infer physical properties of asteroid surfaces. The carbonaceous asteroid Bennu has low thermal inertia suggestive of a surface covered in sub-centimeter rock fragments. However, spacecraft observations revealed that Bennu is instead blanketed by boulders of differing physical properties, with the most abundant population displaying very low thermal inertia compared to carbonaceous chondritic meteorites. Here we show that morphologically distinct particles in samples returned from Bennu also possess distinct thermal and physical properties, consistent with their gene

Insights into Nonelectroactive C-C Bond Formation on Cu(100) during Electrochemical CO2 Reduction from Multiconfigurational Wavefunction Theory.

Carbon-carbon (C-C) bond formation is necessary for hydrocarbon (and oxygenate) synthesis beyond methane (and formate/formic acid) during electrochemical CO and CO2 reduction (ECOR and ECO2R). Cu has notable ability to form hydrocarbons compared to other pure metals. In particular, the (100) facet of face-centered cubic Cu forms ethylene competitively with H2 and methane during both ECOR and ECO2R. Past simulations based on density functional theory (DFT) with standard exchange-correlation functional approximations predict fast nonelectroactive C-C bond formation channels involving adsorbed (*
