Burns : journal of the International Society for Burn Injuries2015eng
PURPOSE: Civilians living amid conflict are at high-risk of burns. However, the epidemiology of burns among this vulnerable group is poorly understood, yet vital for health policy and relief planning. To address this gap, we aimed to determine the death and disability, healthcare needs and household financial consequences of burns in post-invasion Baghdad.
METHODS: A two-stage, cluster randomized, community-based household survey was performed in May 2014 to determine the civilian burden of injury from 2003 to 2014 in Baghdad. In addition to questions about cause of household member death, ho

Burns are a cause of more than 5000 paediatric hospital admissions per year in England and Wales. Injury prevention and service provision may be better planned with knowledge of burn timing. Prospectively collected records from 1st January 2010 to 31st December 2011 were analysed. All episodes involving patients less than 16 years of age reviewed by the South West Children's Burns Centre were included. Data was collected from 1480 records to investigate seasonal, weekly, and daily variation. Day to day analysis showed significantly more burns occurred on Saturday and Sunday than Monday-Friday

BACKGROUND: About 90% of the global burden of burns occurs in the low and middle income countries. In Africa it is estimated that between 17,000 and 30,000 children under five die each year due to burns. In Tanzania there are no specialized burn centers. Burn patients are often managed in the general surgical wards in most hospitals. Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre is one of the four tertiary referral hospitals in Tanzania.
RATIONALE: This study aimed to review the epidemiology presentation management and outcome of burn patients in this challenging environment.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A

A severe burn will significantly alter haematologic parameters, and manifest as anaemia, which is commonly found in patients with greater than 10% total body surface area (TBSA) involvement. Maintaining haemoglobin and haematocrit levels with blood transfusion has been the gold standard for the treatment of anaemia for many years. While there is no consensus on when to transfuse, an increasing number of authors have expressed that less blood products should be transfused. Current transfusion protocols use a specific level of haemoglobin or haematocrit, which dictates when to transfuse packed r

Burns are known to be a cause of the most severe childhood injuries. The purpose of this retrospective study was to investigate socio-demographic and other factors involved in children being presented to a burns unit for treatment. This is the first reported comprehensive audit of burns admissions highlighting factors that may relate to the occurrence of burns in children. Raw data was obtained from the data service unit (DSU) and the ward registers of a paediatric burns unit. Of 1249 admissions, 1156 cases (92.5%) had clearly specified causes. The number of annual admissions ranged from 225 t

Prediction of outcome for patients with major thermal injury is important to inform clinical decision making, alleviate individual suffering and improve hospital resource allocation. Age and burn size are widely accepted as the two largest contributors of mortality amongst burns patients. The APACHE (Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation) III-j score, which incorporates patient age, is also useful for mortality prediction, of intensive care populations. Validation for the burns specific cohort is unclear. A retrospective cohort study was performed on patients admitted to the Intensive

With improved survival in burn patients, Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) remains a significant potential complication. The incidence of, risk factors for, and outcomes of CDI in severely burned patients are poorly studied and remain unclear. This study involves retrospective case control and cohort studies using electronic medical records from February 1, 2002 to January 31, 2009 at the US Department of Defense's only burn unit. Demographic, risk factor, and outcome data were collected for all C. difficile toxin positive patients in the burn, medical, and surgical intensive care units an

Pediatric upper extremity burns are common. Though current American Burn Association guidelines recommend burn unit referral for burns involving the hands or major joints, many minor injuries are treated in the emergency department (ED) or outpatient setting. Despite the large number of burn patients managed by primary care providers, no large studies have been performed to assess effectiveness. A retrospective 5-year review of the epidemiology and outcomes associated with pediatric upper extremity burns treated at an urban ED was performed. Two hundred sixty-nine patients were identified. The

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the preventive effect of ulinastatin on shock in the heart after burn.
METHODS: In an open prospective clinical study 34 adults with burns >50% total body surface area were randomly divided into control (B) and ulinastatin-treated (U) groups. All underwent routine treatment, and group U received 100,000U ulinastatin intravenously three times a day for 1 week. In an animal experiment, 72 healthy rats underwent equivalent burn, similar division into groups B and U, and resuscitation according to Parkland's formula. Rats in group U received ulinastatin (40,000U/kg) imme

The investigation was undertaken to study the effects of perfluorane on the degree of endogenous intoxication in the severely burnt. Sixty-five victims aged 20 to 55 years who had burns of the skin, involving more than 30% of the body surface area, without comorbidity (less than 9 SAPS scores), were examined. All the examinees were divided into 2 groups. They were comparable in age and burn injury degree. Perfluorane was administered in a dose of 4 ml/kg body weight within the first 24 hours after the moment of injury (a study group; n = 30). During the investigation, the authors estimated blo

In this study, authors present a case report of a 10 months old patient with burn injuries involving 20.5 % body surface area, grades 2a and 2b. According to the continuous monitoring of hemodynamic parameters by PiCCO (Pulsion Medical Systems, Munich, Germany), fluid therapy was successfully managed. Despite of an increasing EVLWI (extravascular lung water index) it was possible to preserve the child from lung edema and subsequent artificial lung ventilation by the early targeted therapeutic interventions. Moreover, the study analyzes the possibilities and indications of less invasive hemodyn

BACKGROUND: Active magnetic resonance imaging implants, for example stents, stent grafts or vena cava filters, are constructed as wireless inductively coupled transmit and receive coils. They are built as a resonator tuned to the Larmor frequency of a magnetic resonance system. The resonator can be added to or incorporated within the implant. This technology can counteract the shielding caused by eddy currents inside the metallic implant structure. This may allow getting diagnostic information of the implant lumen (in stent stenosis or thrombosis for example). The electro magnetic rf-pulses du

Burn injury induces a hypercatabolic inflammatory state, predisposing burn patients to malnutrition, poor wound healing, and infectious complications. We conducted this study to determine what effect a diet fortified with fish oil and arginine (FAD) would have on wound healing in a thermally injured population. Twenty-three thermally injured patients were enrolled in this randomized double blind enteral feeding study from July 2002 to August 2004. All study patients received isonitrogenous enteral intragastric feeding within 48 hours of admission. Patients were randomized to our standard diet

Thermal noise, including hypothermia and short-term variations in body temperature, has been reported to influence the accuracy and reproducibility of thermodilution measurements. This variation might theoretically limit the usefulness of this technique in patients with acute burns. We therefore sought to determine the reproducibility of hemodynamic parameters derived from arterial thermal dilution in patients with acute burns and hypothermia. This was a prospective, clinical study of 50 mechanically ventilated patients with burns involving more than 25% of the body surface area that were trea

UNLABELLED: Enteral nutrition as an important component of modern treatment is mandatory for patients suffering from major burns. Regardless of the initial estimation of caloric requirements, actual daily volume of energy consumption may vary depending on the general condition of the patient and the side effects of enteral nutrition. The aim of our study was to investigate the relation between caloric value of enteral nutrition and treatment course.
METHODS: The prospective study involved 103 adult patients treated in the Hospital of Kaunas University of Medicine for 2 degrees -3 degrees burn
