BACKGROUND: Headache is the most common neurological symptoms worldwide, as over 90% of people have noted at least one headache during their lifetime. Tension-type headaches, cervicogenic headaches, and migraines are common types of headache which can have a significant impact on social, physical, and occupational functioning. Therapeutic management of headaches mainly includes physical therapy and pharmacological interventions. Dry needling is a relatively new therapeutic approach that uses a thin filiform needle without injectate to penetrate the skin and stimulate underlying tissues for the

INTRODUCTION: Inappropriate activation of the TLX1 (T-cell leukemia homeobox 1) gene by chromosomal translocation is a recurrent event in human T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (T-ALL). Ectopic expression of TLX1 in murine bone marrow progenitor cells using a conventional retroviral vector efficiently yields immortalized cell lines and induces T-ALL-like tumors in mice after long latency.
METHODS: To eliminate a potential contribution of retroviral insertional mutagenesis to TLX1 immortalizing and transforming function, we incorporated the TLX1 gene into an insulated self-inactivating retr

Insulin and IGF-I are two related peptides performing in the mammalian body functionally different roles of the metabolic and growth hormones, respectively. Internalization of the insulin-receptor complex (IRC) is the most important chain of mechanism of the action of hormone. To elucidate differences in the main stages of internalization of the two related hormones, the internalization dynamics of 125I-insulin and 125I-IGF-I was traced in isolated rat hepatocytes at 37 and 12 degrees C. There were established marked differences in the process of internalization of labeled hormones, which is s

The use of infrared thermal imaging has become increasingly popular in animal behaviour, health, and welfare research over the last decade. Yet, there is a lack of consensus regarding how this technique should be best applied when measuring peripheral temperatures in animals, including which regions of interest to favour. This fundamental issue necessitates checking the reliability and precision of thermal imaging data when taking repeated measurements, both over short and relatively long time windows. Using goats (Capra hircus) as a model, we investigated two subcategories of reliability, sho

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are defined as exposure to traumatic conditions from birth until age 18 years. Exposure to ACEs is associated with poor health outcomes and increased risks of chronic conditions such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and cancer. Pregnant women who have experienced ACEs have increased rates of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress symptoms, substance abuse and suicidality. The high prevalence of ACEs justifies screening, early support and interventions. This Quality Improvement Project was an evaluation of an existing ACEs screening program i

BACKGROUND: The anthropogenic modification of trophic pathways is seemingly prompting the increase of jellyfish populations at the expense of planktivorous fishes. However, gross generalizations are often made because the most basic aspects of trophic ecology and the diverse interactions of jellyfish with fishes remain poorly described. Here we inquire on the dynamics of food consumption of the medusoid stage of the scyphozoan jellyfish Stomolophus meleagris and characterize the traits and diversity of its symbiotic community.
METHODS: S. meleagris and their associated fauna were sampled in s

BACKGROUND: A compact passive oxide layer can grow on tantalum (Ta). It has been reported that this oxide layer can facilitate bone ingrowth in vivo though the development of bone-like apatite, which promotes hard and soft tissue adhesion. Thus, Ta surface treatment on facial implant materials may improve the tissue response, which could result in less fibrotic encapsulation and make the implant more stable on the bone surface. The purposes of this study were to verify whether surface treatment of facial implant materials using Ta can improve the biohistobiological response and to determine th

BACKGROUND: Animals living in well-lit environments utilize optical stimuli for detecting visual information, regulating the homeostatic pacemaker, and controlling patterns of body pigmentation. In contrast, many subterranean animal species without optical stimuli have evolved regressed binocular eyes and body pigmentation. Interestingly, some fossorial and cave-dwelling animals with regressed eyes still respond to light. These light-dependent responses may be simply evolutionary residuals or they may be adaptive, where negative phototaxis provides avoidance of predator-rich surface environmen

Onchocerciasis is co-endemic with schistosomiasis and intestinal helminths infections, which are all diseases of the rural and the poorest communities in Africa. Community-directed treatment (ComDT) for the control of onchocerciasis is the only functional health approach in most of these communities and the strategy has proven to be effective for onchocerciasis control. This study was conducted to assess the feasibility of integrating ComDT with ivermectin for the control of onchocerciasis, and with praziquantel (PZQ) and mebendazole (MBD) for the control of schistosomiasis and intestinal helm

BACKGROUND: Primary cardiac tumors are extremely rare. Cardiac rhabdomyoma is the most common primary cardiac tumor. 50-80% of solitary rhabdomyomas and all multiple rhabdomyomas are associated with tuberous sclerosis complex. Due to spontaneous regression, surgery is necessary only in severe hemodynamic compromise and persistent arrhythmias. Everolimus, a mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitor, can be used in the treatment of rhabdomyomas seen in tuberous sclerosis complex. We aimed to evaluate the clinical progression of rhabdomyomas followed-up in our center between the years 2014

Fruit cracking is a commercially important disorder that reduces both quantity and quality of strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.). The objective was to identify the physiological mechanism of cracking and the factors affecting cracking. Cracking is more common in necked than in normal-shaped fruit. Most macroscopic cracks ('macrocracks') occur in the seedless neck. Large fruit is more cracking susceptible than medium size or small fruit. Macrocrack orientation is predominantly latitudinal in the proximal region of the neck and longitudinal in the mid and distal regions of the neck. The ne

Continuing with comparative genomic exploration of worldwide butterfly fauna, we use all protein-coding genes as they are retrieved from the whole genome shotgun sequences for phylogeny construction. Analysis of these genome-scale phylogenies projected onto the taxonomic classification and the knowledge about butterfly phenotypes suggests further refinements of butterfly taxonomy that are presented here. As a general rule, we assign most prominent clades of similar genetic differentiation to the same taxonomic rank, and use criteria based on relative population diversification and the extent o

The insect exoskeleton is a multifunctional coat with a continuum of mechanical and structural properties constituting the barrier between electromagnetic waves and the internal body parts. This paper examines the ability of beetle exoskeleton to regulate internal body temperature considering its thermal permeability or isolation to simulated solar irradiance and infrared radiation. Seven Neotropical species of dung beetles (Coleoptera, Scarabaeinae) differing in colour, surface sculptures, size, sexual dimorphism, period of activity, guild category and altitudinal distribution were studied. PURPOSE: Complications after open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of ankle fractures are not uncommon, negatively impacting the postoperative outcome. Tibiotalocalcaneal (TTC) arthrodesis has been shown to be a viable treatment option in these cases. The aim of this study was to describe the operative technique and the outcome of patients presenting failed osteosynthesis of the ankle joint managed with TTC using a retrograde femoral IM nail.
METHODS: This is a retrospective observational study of adult patients (18 years or older) operated on for failure in osteosynthesis of the ankle

INTRODUCTION: Osteoarticular TB contributes to roughly 10% of the cases of extrapulmonary TB. The incidence of osteoarticular tuberculosis is one of the lowest in extrapulmonary tuberculosis, probably only next to cutaneous tuberculosis in non-HIV patients. Considering the low incidence of primary osteoarticular tuberculosis without pulmonary tuberculosis, we hypothesise that there is an element of tissue-specific immunity against tuberculosis in the body, which appears to be very high in bone and joints. The concept of immunity against tuberculosis in general is well-established for pulmonary

PLAIN ENGLISH SUMMARY: Public involvement can impact on research, on the public who give advice, on the researchers and the research participants. Evaluating impact is an important part of the research process. Two members of a hospital-based patient research panel and our coordinator have written this paper. Our panel covers a range of rehabilitation and palliative services. These services form the "Therapeutics and Palliative Care Directorate". We describe how we worked collaboratively with hospital staff and co-produced questionnaires to evaluate the impact of our involvement. We compared t

BACKGROUND: Relapse represents the leading cause of death in both child and adult patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Development of chemo-resistance is ultimately responsible for treatment failure and relapse, therefore understanding the molecular basis underlying resistance is imperative for developing innovative treatment strategies. Glucocorticoids (GCs) such dexamethasone and prednisolone are the backbone of combination chemotherapy regimens for treating all lymphoid tumors. However, the biological mechanisms of primary GC resistance in ALL is not completely understood. We p
