A reversed-HPLC method was established to determinate penicillins in whole blood. Thiamphenicol as internal standard was added to 0.5 ml blood. Proteins in blood were precipitated with acetonitrile, then the separate supernatant was directly injected onto the chromatography column. The range of five penicillins' linearities was 0.9918 to 0.9996, their range of relative recovery was 91.75% to 107.33%, their CV was 3.56% to 9.85%. Effects of different storage temperatures on the stability of analytes and interference of other antibiotics were also studied.

Pneumopericardium usually occurs in a traumatic context or, more rarely, in the course of benign or malignant bronchial or oesophagogastric diseases. Although the idiopathic spontaneous form is even rarer, pneumopericardium complicating liver abscess is exceptional, and is facilitated by impaired immune defenses (alcoholism, immuno-depression). The authors report a case of liver abscess complicated by pneumopericardium in an HIV seropositive patient. The nature of the abscess, the mechanism of the pneumopericardium and the therapeutic management are discussed.

In 2340 adult patients above the age of 26 years with rheumatic valvular disease (RHD) seen since 1987, injection benzathine penicillin (once in 3 weeks) was discontinued and the patients were followed for evidence of rheumatic fever for a period of one to nine years (mean of 3 years). Recurrence of rheumatic fever was seen in 5 patients (0.21%). This study confirms that recurrence of rheumatic fever in patients with RHD above 26 years of age is very low and hence we recommend long term chemoprophylaxis to the patients above the age of 26 on an individual basis.

The effects of three Chinese ancient prescriptions, Bazhengsan, Pixiefenqingyin and Wulinsan were determined in vitro against 4 strains of Diplocous gonorrhoeaes. The results showed antibacterial activity of Bazhengsan was the highest, with a MIC from 6.25% mg/ml to 25 mg/ml. when the concentration of Bazhengsan was 100 mg/ml or over, all the Diplocous gonorrhoeae tested would be killed within ten minutes.

Application of capillary electrophoresis to monitoring the concentration of material penicillin and the intermediates in the manufacturing process of semisynthetic penicillins was investigated. Factors affecting the precision of analysis were screened and optimised by orthogonal array designs. A mixture of seven penicillins was separated on a C-8 column and detected using pulsed amperometric detection (PAD). Due to the polarity range of the penicillin mixture, a gradient program was necessary to produce a reasonable separation, causing some baseline shifting. Application of a flow program, where the solvent flow rate is varied within the separation, was also examined, and found to cause only a small shift in baseline response for PAD. Further examination of a variety of different flow programs was undertaken to characterize the baseline and analyte response under these conditions. N
