BACKGROUND: Penicillin allergy (PenA) labels are common and often do not represent true immune-mediated allergy, yet are not routinely assessed or tested in the ICU. With greater demand for effective antimicrobial stewardship, and growing support for non-allergist performed PenA assessment, enthusiasm for routine ICU-led PenA evaluation is increasing. However, we do not presently understand key factors needed to plan and deliver such a change.
METHODS: We conducted a convergent mixed-methods study combining an electronic survey of ICU healthcare staff with follow-up interviews. Participants i

OBJECTIVE: Rhinosinusitis (RS) is prevalent in the ambulatory setting. When indicated, treatment with penicillin is recommended. However, up to 25% of the US population has a penicillin allergy label (PAL) within their health record, which can result in treatment with second-line antibiotics. The study explored the effect of PAL on clinical outcomes in RS.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review.
SETTING: Ochsner Medical Centre.
METHODS: A chart review was performed in adult patients with RS who received antibiotics between 2011 and 2024. Treatment failure was defined as need for a second

Veterinary medicine costs are a major component to the economic losses caused by diseases in dairy cattle herds. This study aimed to quantify veterinary drug costs with a particular emphasis on antibiotics, in relation to key production parameters on eight large Hungarian dairy farms (average: 864 cows per herd) from 2017 to 2019. Veterinary drug costs were analysed by product group and indication, with antibiotic costs further categorised by substance class and indication. The average annual cost of veterinary drugs was €75.4 per cow and 0.80 € cents*L-1 milk. Antibiotics accounted for the la

Mastitis is an important disease in dairy cattle with huge influence on animal welfare and economic situation of farmers. With very limited choices in antibiotic therapy of bovine mastitis and the relevance of emerging antimicrobial resistances, discovery of new antimicrobials is one of the major challenges for veterinary pharmacological research. Thus, in vitro efficacy of four promising substances was investigated: polyvinylpyrrolidone iodine (PVP iodine), N-acetylcysteine (NAC), N-chlorotaurine (NCT), and methylglyoxal (MGO). PVP iodine is an antiseptic commonly used in all medical fields.

In December 2024, the German S3 guideline on perioperative and periinterventional antibiotic prophylaxis (PAP) was published after years of interdisciplinary collaboration. This guideline was developed with the involvement of a delegation from the German Society of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, because it is particularly important for our medical specialty: in interdisciplinary comparison, otorhinolaryngologists traditionally prescribe a relatively high number of antibiotics in perioperative settings. The S3 guideline is based on randomized controlled trials and review articles e

Penicillins are important beta-lactam antibiotics that are frequently used in dentistry. Many odontogenic infections are sensitive to penicillin. An allergic reaction to penicillin is an undesirable and life-threatening response mounted by the immune system. Penicillin allergies can be either Type I Anaphylactic reactions or Type IV Delayed reactions. Concerns regarding penicillin allergy over-reporting and the prescribing of potentially less effective yet more expensive alternatives have been topics of discussion in recent years. This article aims to provide a comprehensive review of the lite

BACKGROUND: In South Korea, studies on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) have predominantly focused on molecular typing, with ST5 and ST72 consistently identified as dominant lineages. However, data on the distribution of virulence factors and antimicrobial resistance genes among recent clinical MRSA isolates remain limited. This study aimed to characterize antimicrobial resistance determinants and virulence gene profiles in contemporary clinical MRSA isolates from South Korea.
METHODS: One hundred human-derived clinical MRSA isolates, collected between February 2024 and Janu

BACKGROUND: The selection of an eco-friendly, selective and cheap extraction solvent for effective and green liquid-phase microextraction is always a challenging task in analytical chemistry. Supramolecular solvents serving as safer alternatives to traditional extractants hold promise for this goal. Additionally, they can be tailored to a specific task. However, traditional surfactants can still pose environmental risks due to their persistence and toxicity. To address the issue, introduction of bio-based surfactants derived from natural sources to obtain supramolecular solvents is of high int

The emergence of antimicrobial resistance in environmental bacteria threatens therapeutic efficacy in clinical settings. Shewanella algae, historically regarded as a marine saprophyte, is increasingly recognized as an emerging opportunistic pathogen. In this study, we analyzed 86 S. algae isolates from Spain (19 clinical and 67 environmental) and integrated them with 178 publicly available genomes to explore antimicrobial susceptibility patterns and genomic diversity. Penicillins and fosfomycin consistently showed poor activity, whereas piperacillin/tazobactam, third- and fourth-generation cep

BACKGROUND: Up to 10% of hospitalized patients in Europe carry a penicillin allergy label, yet most are inaccurate. Mislabelling drives inappropriate broad-spectrum antibiotic use, increased resistance, prolonged admissions, and higher costs. Whilst local and national studies suggest that de-labelling is cost-saving, there has been no EU-wide analysis accounting for cross-country differences in antimicrobial resistance (AMR), costs, and equity.
METHODS: We conducted a distributional cost-effectiveness analysis (DCEA) comparing Uniform versus Targeted rollout of penicillin allergy de-labelling

BACKGROUND: Antibacterials are essential for treating infections in horses, but the use contributes to antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which threatens animal and human health. Despite these concerns, antibacterial use in horses has not been systematically studied and described in Norway, and nationwide registry-based analyses in other countries are scarce. The aim of this study is to describe antibacterial use in Norwegian horses, 2022–2024, by analysing nationwide registry data, with a particular emphasis on gynecological and obstetrical conditions. In addition, we will evaluate the data qual

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter cinaedi is the most common species of enterohepatic Helicobacter reported to cause bloodstream infections in humans. The establishment of effective treatment strategies for H. cinaedi bacteraemia is required, since the association between in vitro susceptibility and clinical response has yet to be demonstrated.
METHODS: The medical records of all patients diagnosed with H. cinaedi bacteraemia at two Japanese hospitals between March 2009 and December 2016 were retrospectively reviewed. We investigated the antimicrobial susceptibility of H. cinaedi using the broth micro

This research aimed to assess the effects of ampicillin (AMP), chloramphenicol (CAM), hygromycin B (HygB), paromomycin (PR), and penicillin (PCN) on Haematococcus lacustris. The EC50 and EC10 values were determined for these five antibiotics. Based on their EC50 values, HygB and CAM were both found to be non-toxic to H. lacustris. The effects of supplementing H. lacustris cultures with the EC10 values of each antibiotic were additionally noted. The results revealed that the application of AMP and CAM enhanced the growth of H. lacustris. Among all, the H. lacustris culture grown with CAM (75.85

OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 pandemic placed unprecedented pressure on health systems and was accompanied by substantial changes in antimicrobial consumption (AMC) worldwide. In Peru, evidence describing national AMC during this period remains limited. This study aimed to describe patterns and temporal trends in AMC within Peruvian public health services between 2019 and 2022.
METHODS: National consumption data reported to the World Health Organization's GLASS-AMU platform were analysed. AMC was expressed as density in defined daily doses per 1000 inhabitants per day (DID) and stratified by Anato

BACKGROUND: Antistaphylococcal penicillins (ASPs) are highly effective against infections caused by methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA). Nafcillin and oxacillin are ASPs with similar spectra of activity, rates of efficacy, pharmacokinetic profiles, and cost. However, there is a growing body of evidence suggesting key distinctions between the safety profiles of nafcillin and oxacillin, including a higher rate of acute kidney injury (AKI) with nafcillin. This retrospective study aims to compare the rate of AKI with nafcillin versus oxacillin at a large academic medical center.
