Epidemiological study and risk factors of equine (Equus ferus caballus) gastrointestinal helminth infections in the north and northeast of Iran.

Understanding the epidemiology of gastrointestinal (GI) helminth infections in equines is critical for investigating drug resistance patterns and developing effective strategies to control and prevent these infections. There is a lack of data regarding horse GI helminths and risk factors in the north and northeast of Iran. Hence, the present study aimed to identify GI helminths in horses in these regions and determine their risk factors. A total of 340 fecal specimens from horses of north (n = 141) and northeast (n = 199) Iran were coprologically examined for GI helminth infections. The polyme

Discovery of novel repurposed anthelminthics against Trichinella spiralis and albendazole-resistant nematodes through metabolomics-guided virtual screening.

Trichinella spiralis is a parasitic nematode that causes trichinellosis, leading to weakness, muscle pain, facial edema, and potentially death. Albendazole (ABZ) is the current drug of choice; however, resistance has been increasingly reported, highlighting the urgent need for novel therapeutics. Developing new drugs is costly and time-consuming, making computational approaches and drug repurposing attractive alternatives. In this study, we combined metabolomics and virtual screening to identify potential anthelmintic candidates for trichinellosis and ABZ-resistant nematodes. Both adult and la

Abnormal platelet function in a patient with transient eosinophilia: A case-based discussion.

Eosinophilia is commonly associated with parasitic infections, allergic disorders and haematological conditions. Although bleeding in patients with eosinophilia is rare, platelet dysfunction may contribute, even when platelet counts are normal. We report the case of a 7-year-old boy with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency who presented with recurrent spontaneous bruising over 6 months. Physical examination revealed multiple ecchymoses over the lower limbs, with no organomegaly or lymphadenopathy. Laboratory investigations revealed a normal platelet count, marked eosinophilia and prol

Catching a zebra in a surgical ward: atypical case of chylothorax caused by filariasis in a lupus patient-a case report from a surgical perspective.

BACKGROUND: Filariasis is a tropical disease caused by filariae, parasitic worms belonging to the phylum Nematoda. The clinical manifestations include asymptomatic microfilaremia, fever, lymphatic obstruction, and tropical eosinophilia. Chylothorax is the accumulation of chylous substances within the pleural space and is caused by thoracic duct damage or obstruction. Filariasis and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have been identified as rare but potential causes of chylothorax. CASE PRESENTATION: We reported a case of a 21-year-old North Sumatran female patient with SLE who presented in the

Targeted supplementation with bioactive plants sustainably improves goat health and decreases antiparasitic drug use on smallholder farms.

Goats play a significant role in farming communities in semi-arid tropical areas with limited cropping capacity; however, production is limited by endoparasites, especially gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs). Control of GINs is typically mediated by anthelmintic drugs, but can be costly or ineffective where anthelmintic-resistant GINs are present. To manage anthelmintic resistance and improve herd health at lower costs, farmers can implement Targeted Selective Treatment (TST) strategies to treat animals based on performance or health traits. The study aimed to quantify the impacts of plant-base

Taxon, Arboreality, Sex, and Season-Factors Influencing Gastrointestinal Parasite Occurrence in Zoo-Housed Non-Human Primates.

The emergence of anthelminthic resistance is a well-documented phenomenon in livestock and companion animals. Given the scarcity of new antiparasitic drugs, the implementation of effective, holistic anthelminthic control strategies is critical to preserving the efficacy of existing treatments. Understanding parasite-host-environment interactions is necessary to establish such strategies aiming to reduce the use of anthelminthic drugs, mitigate resistance, and ultimately improve animal health and welfare. This study analyzed 3767 fecal parasitological reports from non-human primates housed at a

Interactions of microplastics with pesticides and anthelminthics mediate undesirable effects on microbial nitrogen cycling in agricultural soils.

Microplastics (MPs) frequently co-occur with pesticides and veterinary medicines in agricultural soils. However, their interactive effects on soil microbiota remain largely unknown. Therefore, we investigated the effects of three MP types (LDPE-, PBAT-, and starch-based), applied at two concentrations (0.01% and 0.1%), either alone or in combination with the fungicide pyraclostrobin and/or the anthelminthic albendazole (ABZ), on soil microbial functioning. Nitrate levels, nitrification rates, ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms, and denitrifying bacteria served as indicators of perturbations on s

Pesticide, Veterinary Medicines, and Microplastics: Bipartite and Tripartite Interactions Drive the Transformation of Albendazole and Pyraclostrobin in Agricultural Soils.

Soil constitutes a major sink for microplastics (MPs). In agricultural soils, microplastics co-occur with pesticides and veterinary medicines like anthelminthics (AHs). Little is known regarding the influence of microplastics on the dissipation of these organic pollutants. We hypothesized (a) that microplastics due to their hydrophobic surfaces would affect the dissipation of the anthelminthic albendazole (ABZ) and the fungicide pyraclostrobin (PYR), and (b) the outcome of this interaction will vary depending on the type (PBAT-based, Starch-based, and LDPE-based) and the concentration (0.1 and

Zambia: A Narrative Review of Success and Challenges in Lymphatic Filariasis Elimination.

The establishment of the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GPELF) to stop the transmission of infection has significantly reduced the incidence of lymphatic filariasis, a debilitating mosquito-borne neglected tropical disease. The primary strategies that have been employed include mass drug administration (MDA) of anthelminthics and morbidity management and disability prevention (MMDP). While some countries have been able to reach elimination status in Africa, there is still active transmission of LF in Zambia. The nematode responsible for the disease is Wuchereria bancrofti,

Seroprevalence Assessment and Risk Factor Analysis of Toxoplasma gondii Infection in Goats from Northeastern Algeria.

T. gondii is the causal agent of toxoplasmosis, a worldwide zoonotic disease relevant in human and veterinary medicine. In Algeria, few reports focused on the presence and circulation of this parasite in the local goat population. The aim of the survey was to evaluate toxoplasmosis seroprevalence and associated risk factors. Sera from 460 goats reared on 72 farms in northeastern Algeria were collected and tested for IgG antibodies to T. gondii by an indirect ELISA. To identify risk factors, a linear regression analysis of the variables was performed. Anti-T. gondii antibodies were found in 94.

Accessibility of Soil-transmitted Helminthiasis Control Strategies in Selected Indigenous People Communities in the Philippines.

BACKGROUND: Indigenous peoples (IPs) remain vulnerable to soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) due to limited access to sanitary toilets, clean water, quality health education, and services. The World Health Organization recommends periodic mass drug administration (MDA) of anthelminthics, health education, and improvements in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) as control strategies to reduce morbidities caused by STH in target populations such as school-age children (SAC).This paper complements the published results of the parasitological survey (prevalence and intensity of STH) conducted

Exposure of gut bacterial isolates to the anthelminthic drugs, ivermectin and moxidectin, leads to antibiotic-like phenotypes of growth inhibition and adaptation.

Due to their broad-spectrum activities, ivermectin and moxidectin are widely used anthelminthics in veterinary and human medicine. However, ivermectin has recently been shown to perturbate bacterial growth. Given the macrolide-like structure of both ivermectin and moxidectin, there is a need to characterize the antibiotic spectrum of these anthelminthics and their potential implications in the development of cross-resistance to macrolides and other families of antibiotics. Here, we characterize growth dynamics of 59 bacterial isolates in presence of ivermectin and moxidectin. Further, we asses

Neuroschistosomiasis: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Spinal cord involvement is a rare complication of the schistosomiasis manifesting as myeloradiculopathy, medullary or conus-cauda equina syndrome which can lead to potentially serious long-term disability. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging coupled with biochemical parameters have become the mainstay of diagnosis. Biopsy which is the gold standard of diagnosis demonstrating the organism is usually reserved for cases of diagnostic challenge. We report a rare case of upper thoracic spinal cord schistosomiasis diagnosed by biopsy in an 18-year-old male migrant presenting to a spin

Persistent transmission of soil-transmitted helminths despite 16 years of uninterrupted Mebendazole- and ivermectin-based preventive chemotherapy in the Lomie Health District (East Region, Cameroon): The emergency of complementary control strategies.

BACKGROUND: The control of the Soil-Transmitted Helminths (STH) infections primarily relies on the school-based Preventive Chemotherapy (PCT) with mebendazole. Given the efficacy of ivermectin on STH, the control of the latter is expected to be potentialized in areas where ivermectin is also distributed for onchocerciasis and/or lymphatic filariasis control/elimination. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and intensity of STH in the Lomie Health District where annual school-based deworming campaigns and community-directed treatments with Ivermectin have been underway for almost two decad
