Has the Protective Effect of Hormonal Contraception Been Overestimated? A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Oral Contraceptive Pills and ACL Injury.

BACKGROUND: Hormonal contraception (HC), including oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) and long-acting reversible contraceptives, is widely used by reproductive-aged women for various medical indications. Emerging evidence suggests a possible association between HC use and reduced anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury risk; however, no meta-analysis has systematically evaluated this relationship. PURPOSE: To determine whether HC use reduces the risk of ACL injury in females through a systematic review and meta-analysis. STUDY DESIGN: Meta-analysis; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: A systematic

Risk Factors for Vertical Transmission of Human Immunodeficiency Virus in Angola: A Case-Control Study.

Vertical transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains a public health challenge in Angola despite the expansion of prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) programmes. This study aimed to identify factors associated with vertical HIV transmission in a referral maternity hospital in Luanda. An observational case-control study was conducted using retrospective clinical and laboratory records from 2019 to 2024. A total of 204 mother-infant pairs were included, comprising 68 cases (HIV-infected infants) and 136 controls (HIV-exposed but uninfected infants), frequency-matche

Impact of menstrual cycle and hormonal contraception on whole-body protein turnover in recreationally active females.

Protein turnover may be influenced by menstrual cycle hormones and hormones from oral contraceptives (OCs) and hormonal intrauterine devices (H-IUDs), yet data are limited. This study evaluated whole-body protein turnover in 40 healthy, active females (eumenorrheic = 15; OC = 13; H-IUD = 12) tested once in low- and high-hormone phases. Using a [15N]alanine tracer, net protein balance, synthesis, breakdown, and nitrogen flux were measured. No group differences were observed. Protein breakdown and nitrogen flux were higher in the low-hormone phase in the total sample. These small hormone cycle p

Associations between androgen levels and endurance training-induced changes in body composition and physical performance in premenopausal females.

We investigated whether a moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) for two menstrual/contraceptive cycles (~8 weeks) alters endogenous androgen concentrations in premenopausal females, and whether baseline androgen concentrations or their changes from baseline to post-intervention are associated with adaptations in body composition and physical performance. Serum total/free testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, androstenedione, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), DHEA-sulfate (DHEA-S), and sex hormone-binding globulin were analyzed in follicular/luteal phases in eumenorrheic females (EUM, n = 18)

Estetrol-based combined oral contraceptives: A systematic review of clinical outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Combined oral contraceptive pills (COCs) are a common contraceptive method among women of reproductive age. Ethinylestradiol (EE) is a frequently used estrogen component in COCs. However, EE may increase the risk of cardiovascular complications by affecting coagulation, fibrinolysis, and blood pressure. Lowering the dose of EE to minimize the risk has been linked to disadvantageous bleeding patterns. The natural estrogen estetrol (E4) has been introduced as an alternative component to EE. E4 has been suggested to have beneficial effects on targeted tissue with a limited impact on

Oral contraceptives exposure may reduce the risk of ovarian cancer: a meta-analysis based on cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: Ovarian cancer ranks fourth in terms of incidence among gynecological malignancies and third as a cause of cancer death in the gynecological field, with oral contraceptives (OCs) exhibiting a potential relationship to ovarian cancer chemoprevention. This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the association between exposure to OCs and the incidence of ovarian cancer. METHODS: Following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines, PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched for cohort studies on OCs and ovarian

Clinical and endocrine effects of pharmacological therapy in endometriosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis, PCOS, adenomyosis, and dysmenorrhea are major illnesses. Hormonal as well as non-hormonal treatments were evaluated for COCs, progestins, GnRH analogues, LNG-IUS, relugolix, and adjunctive therapies. These treatments resulted in the categorization of the benefits in varying degrees. METHODS: 149 clinical trials have been included. Evaluating the methodological quality was done through the Jadad scale, while the GRADE criteria were used to assess the reliability of the evidence. When these data were available, effect sizes, standardized mean differences (SMD), 95% co

Associations of oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy with incident dementia risk: a population-based cohort study.

The relationships between exogenous hormones and dementia, as well as cognitive function in females, remains debated. This study aimed to investigate the associations of exogenous hormone exposure (oral contraceptives [OC] and hormone replacement therapy [HRT]) with incident dementia risk, cognitive function and changes in brain structures. Multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to assess the associations between exogenous hormone exposure and dementia incidence. Linear regression models were employed to explore the relationships of exogenous hormone exposure and cogn

Association of CFRD development among females with CF who use hormonal contraception.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests the effects of combined (containing both estrogen and progestin) hormonal contraception (CHC) can negatively affect insulin sensitivity. This study aims to better understand the associations between hormonal contraceptive (HC) use, prevalence of existing CFRD, and incidence of developing CFRD in females with CF. METHODS: Between January 2021 to April 2022, we recruited females ages 18-45 years with CF from 10 CF centers to complete a retrospective online questionnaire regarding contraceptive use from 2008 to survey completion year. We linked survey responses to t

Predictors of postpartum modern contraceptive use intentions among pregnant women in urban Ghana: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: the provision of modern family planning services is crucial for postpartum women. In some cases, women have become pregnant before having their first menstruation following a delivery. Often, such pregnancy is deemed unplanned and unwanted and may be aborted. Therefore, identifying the predictors of extended postpartum contraceptive use among women is essential for efficient postpartum contraceptive use. METHODS: a health facility-based, cross-sectional study was conducted at the Ashanti Regional Hospital, Kumasi, Ghana in 2018. A sample size of 298 pregnant women attending the

Synthetic estrogen and progestin effects on the myogenic program following damage in C2C12 murine myoblasts.

Females exhibit distinct responses to exercise-induced muscle damage, possibly due to circulating hormone profiles. Despite the widespread use of oral contraceptives (OC) among females, the muscle damage and repair response during synthetic hormone use remains unknown. This study investigated how ethinyl estradiol (EE) and synthetic progestins [representing the different OC generations: medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA), OC1; levonorgestrel (LNG), OC2; desogestrel (DSG), OC3; and drospirenone (DRP), OC4] influence C2C12 myoblast behavior. We examined proliferation, differentiation, and migrati

Beyond Conventional Therapy: A Comprehensive Review of Herbal, Traditional, and Emerging Interventions for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common and multifactorial endocrine disorder that leads to significant changes in the reproductive, metabolic, and psychological domains of women's health in their reproductive years. In addition, the conventional therapies (lifestyle modification, metformin, oral contraceptives, and ovulation-inducing agents) that are the mainstay of management of the syndrome may still not be able to fully address the diverse pathophysiology of PCOS as well as the long-term risks associated with it. This narrative review highlights clinical and mechanistic data fr
