Influence of contraception on the vaginal microbiota in Argentine women.

The study of vaginal dysfunction in women using various contraceptive methods is relevant, since each method modifies the vaginal microbiota and the host immune response differently. The aims of this study were: (1) To evaluate the prevalence of different contraceptive methods. (2) To evaluate vaginal imbalance, prevalence of bacterial vaginosis (BV), yeasts, trichomoniasis and vaginal inflammatory response (VIR). (3) To characterize Lactobacillus species in patients using different contraceptive methods (oral contraceptive pills (OCPs), condom, copper intrauterine device (Cu-IUD) and tubal li

Patterns of contraceptive side-effect variation: Assessing medical and lifestyle factors associated with side-effects among those using hormonal contraception in the United Kingdom.

INTRODUCTION: Contraceptive counselling typically employs a one size fits all approach and little is understood about variation in experiences of contraceptive side-effects and their drivers. This study set out to identify lifestyle and medical factors associated with experiencing side-effects when using hormonal contraception. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective case-control study among users of four hormonal contraceptive methods (within the past 10 years) in the United Kingdom. We defined cases as those who discontinued a contraceptive method due to side-effects compared to controls

Oral Contraceptive Use and Improved Graft Maturation After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction in Female Patients: An MRI-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: Female athletes have a greater risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, a disparity partly attributed to hormonal influences on ligament biomechanics and collagen metabolism. Oral contraceptives (OCs) may stabilize hormonal fluctuations and have been associated with a reduced risk of ACL injury; however, their potential effect on biological healing after ACL reconstruction (ACLR) remains unclear. PURPOSE: To investigate whether the use of OCs affects graft maturation, assessed by the signal-to-noise quotient (SNQ) of postoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), in fem

Autoimmune Progesterone Dermatitis: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Autoimmune progesterone dermatitis (APD) is a rare hypersensitivity reaction triggered by progesterone, predominantly affecting women in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. This case describes a 50-year-old woman with hypothyroidism and prolonged use of oral contraceptives, who presented with recurrent pruritic skin lesions occurring 3-10 days before menstruation and resolving post-menses. Clinical examination identified the lesions as urticarial plaques. After ruling out other conditions, such as urticarial vasculitis and autoinflammatory syndromes, a diagnosis of APD was established. Assessing the association between combined oral contraceptive use, selected biomarkers, and depressive episodes among premenopausal women: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Combined oral contraceptives (COCs) are widely used among premenopausal women because of their contraceptive efficacy and favourable safety profile. However, concerns remain regarding their potential association with depressive symptoms and major depressive disorder (MDD), possibly mediated through alterations in neurochemical, inflammatory, and neurotrophic biomarkers. Hence, this study aims to provide a comprehensive synthesis of the available evidence on the link between COC and selected biomarkers associated with MDD risk and to assess whether the reported outcome is associated

Differences in cortisol responding and post-stress affiliation among women who are naturally cycling, using oral contraceptives, and using IUDs.

Despite the pervasiveness of women's use of hormonal contraceptives, surprisingly little is known about the influence of HCs on psychological processes under stress. We examined how hormonal contraceptive use, including use of oral contraceptives and hormonal intrauterine devices (IUDs), relates to physiological and affiliative responses under stress. Women (N=190) underwent the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST), provided saliva samples for assays of free cortisol and progesterone, and completed three measures of affiliation. Women using both oral contraceptives and hormonal IUDs showed blunted

Combined Hormonal Contraception with Low-Dose Ethinylestradiol is Associated with Modest Reduction of Breast Milk Volume when Administered Vaginally, but Not Orally.

BACKGROUND: Combined hormonal contraception (CHC) is habitually not prescribed to breastfeeding women due to concerns of decreased milk production. This habit is based on inconclusive studies that examined lactation suppression of CHC with high-dose Ethinylestradiol (EE ≥ 30 µg/day). Notably, the effect of oral CHC with current low-dose EE (20 µg/day EE), and of vaginal rings (15 µg/day EE), has not yet been studied. Here, we examine their effect on breastmilk production. STUDY DESIGN: This study included 172 breastfeeding women, and evaluated self-reported breastmilk production, with and wit

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis risk across various oral contraceptives: a disproportionality analysis of the FDA adverse event reporting system.

OBJECTIVE: Estrogen-containing oral contraceptives (OCPs) increase the risk of thromboembolic events including cerebral venous sinus thromboses (CVSTs). However, robust pharmacovigilance data comparing CVST risk across OCPs remain limited. STUDY DESIGN: The FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) was used to investigate which OCPs are associated with a disproportionally high CVST reporting. RESULTS: There were 479 reports of CVST across OCPs. Estrogen containing contraceptives were associated with disproportionally high CVST reporting, with ethinyl estradiol + drosperinone exhibiting the

Endometriosis and ovarian cancer: epidemiological evidence, molecular insights, and clinical decision-making.

Endometriosis, particularly ovarian endometrioma, is associated with a 2-fold increased risk of ovarian cancer (OC), especially the clear cell and endometrioid subtypes. However, the absolute lifetime risk of OC in women with endometriosis remains relatively low, estimated at 1.9%. This review provides a focused overview of the relationship between these two conditions, addressing epidemiologic data, molecular links, advances in diagnosis, and clinical management. Somatic mutations in ARID1A, PIK3CA, and KRAS are shared between endometriosis and certain OC subtypes, and the nature of the envir

Research "Factors affecting postpartum intention to use contraceptives in Wadajir, Mogadishu, Somalia".

BACKGROUND: Family planning is typically given less priority by policymakers, service providers, and users. Family planning is widely acknowledged as a women's and children's health-improving and life-saving intervention. Due to the dearth of accurate and up-to-date national data on Somali women of reproductive age's postpartum intention to use contraception, this research aimed to assess the factors affecting postpartum women's intention to use contraceptives in Mogadishu, Somalia. METHODS: This hospital-based descriptive cross-sectional study used quantitative data collection among 334 repr

Beyond birth control: how oral contraceptives impact skeletal muscle health: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) are one of the most prescribed medications, yet we lack an understanding of whether and how OCPs affect nonreproductive tissues. Given the well-documented effects of sex hormones on skeletal muscle, including on muscle mass, regeneration, and recovery, our review was aimed at assessing the impact of OCPs on skeletal muscle physiology in female humans and animals. We performed a literature search, title through full text screening, and citation search in accordance with PROSPERO guidelines. Rigor and reproducibility were assessed using the Modified Downs and Blac

Seeking oral contraceptives information from pharmacists among female adolescents and young adults.

BACKGROUND: Over-the-counter (OTC) oral contraceptives can reduce barriers to access birth control among female adolescents and young adults. Pharmacists play an important role in providing information about these products when needed. However, reasons why female adolescents and young adults may or may not seek information about OTC oral contraceptives from pharmacists is not well understood. OBJECTIVE(S): This study aimed to examine predictors of willingness to seek assistance from pharmacists for OTC oral contraceptive use and to determine the difference in the effect of these predictors be

Optimizing women's cardiovascular health across the life course: The role of physical activity in female-specific conditions.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in women, and its development results from both traditional risk factors and female-specific determinants that emerge across the life course. This narrative review explores the role of physical activity in reducing risk associated with five major sex-specific cardiovascular determinants: hormonal contraception, polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, pregnancy complications and menopause. This review synthesized up-to-date studies exploring the associations between these conditions and cardiovascular risk in women, as wel

LMS-based continuous reference values for the myokine musclin in serum in children and adults.

BACKGROUND: Musclin is a myokine which is linked to muscle activity and systemic metabolic regulation. Age-specific reference values for serum musclin are lacking in both the pediatric and adult population, limiting the interpretation of circulating musclin concentrations in clinical practice and studies. OBJECTIVES: To establish Lambda-Mu-Sigma (LMS)-based continuous age-specific reference values for serum musclin in children and adults. METHODS: Musclin concentrations were measured in serum by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in 399 children (190 girls) aged 0.1-18 years from the

The central role of hyperandrogenism in driving metabolic dysfunction in polycystic ovary syndrome: from pathophysiological mechanisms to targeted therapies.

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a prevalent endocrine disorder wherein hyperandrogenism plays a central pathogenic role that extends beyond its reproductive manifestations. This review systematically elucidates the pathophysiological mechanisms through which hyperandrogenism, acting in a vicious cycle with insulin resistance, drives systemic metabolic dysfunction. We synthesize evidence demonstrating that hyperandrogenism promotes organ-specific lipotoxicity and insulin resistance. This contributes to visceral adiposity, hepatic steatosis (and its progression to metabolic dysfunction-associated s

Mitochondrial Function Under Combined Oral Contraceptive Exposure in a Neuroblastoma Model: A Preliminary Investigation.

Background: Endogenous estradiol/progesterone (E2/P4) regulates neuronal mitochondrial bioenergetics and redox balance. However, the effects of combined oral contraceptive (COC) steroids under physiologically relevant hormonal conditions remain poorly understood. Therefore, this study aims to investigate how COC steroids modulate mitochondrial function within the defined E2/P4 hormonal milieus. Methods: Human SH-SY5Y cells (Cytion) were starved for 48 h in Cytion medium without FBS and with 1% ITS, and then exposed for 48 h to six conditions: vehicle (F0); follicular-like E2/P4 (F1); luteal-li
