Development of selective mercury recovery technology by using iron iodide from waste sludge of non-ferrous metal smelting process.

The waste sludge from non-ferrous metal smelter contains high concentrations of mercury (Hg), arsenic (As) and sulfur (S). The Article 11 of the Minamata Convention on Mercury mandates the recovery of Hg before the disposal stage of Hg waste. However, As compounds have similar boiling points with Hg compounds, and they are considered interfering substances in the recovery of Hg. Moreover, a high concentration of S requires significant energy to volatilize Hg. This study examined the optimal conditions for selective recovery of Hg and energy reduction by introducing FeI2 as an additive during t

Fe-doping induced surface Fe2+/Fe3+ cycle and activated redox-inert TiO2 for enhanced Hg(II) electrochemical sensing: An efficient strategy to strengthen the redox activity.

Recently, Fe-based metal oxide with a variable-valence ability (i.e., the Fe2+/Fe3+ cycle) can participate in the redox of target heavy metal ions (HMIs) and enhance the electrochemical signal, which have attracted significant attention. However, it has not yet been proved whether iron-based metal oxides with variable-valence ability can activate the variable valence behavior of inert metal oxides (i.e., TiO2) and enable them to participate in the redox of target HMIs. Herein, we develop an efficient Fe-doped strategy to activate TiO2 nanoparticles for the electrochemical detection of Hg(II).

Alteration of osteoclast activity in childhood cancer survivors: Role of iron and of CB2/TRPV1 receptors.

Childhood cancer survivors (CCS) are predisposed to the onset of osteoporosis (OP). It is known that iron overload induces osteoclasts (OCs) overactivity and that the iron chelator Deferasirox (DFX) can counteract it. The Cannabinoid Receptor type 2 (CB2) and the transient receptor potential vanilloid type-1 (TRPV1) are potential therapeutic targets for OP. In this study we isolated OCs from peripheral blood of 20 CCS and investigated osteoclast biomarkers expression and iron metabolism evaluating iron release by OCs and the expression of several molecules involved in its regulation. Moreover,

Protective effect of tin chloride on rhabdomyolysis-induced acute kidney injury in rats.

The heme component of myoglobin plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of rhabdomyolysis-associated acute kidney injury (RM-AKI). Heme oxiganenase-1 (HO-1) is the rate-limiting enzyme of heme catabolism, and its metabolites, iron, biliverdin, and carbon monoxide, have antioxidant properties. Tin chloride (SnCl2) is a kidney specific HO-1 inducer. In this study, we examined whether the induction of HO-1 in the kidney by SnCl₂ pretreatment ameliorates RM-AKI in rats and if the effect is due to the degradation of excess renal free heme. We developed an RM-AKI rat (male Sprague-Dawley rats) mode

Speciation of tin ions in oxide glass containing iron oxide through solvent extraction and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry after the decomposition utilizing ascorbic acid.

Determining the concentrations of different Sn ions in glass containing iron oxide by wet chemical analysis is a challenge because a redox reaction occurs between Sn2+ and Fe3+. A chemical analysis method for determining the concentrations of Sn2+ and Sn4+ in soda lime glass containing iron oxide was proposed. A mixture of ascorbic acid, hydrochloric acid, and hydrofluoric acid was used to decompose the sample in a vessel with nitrogen flow. Ascorbic acid functioned as a reductant for Fe3+. Subsequently, the Sn2+ were separated as a diethyldithiocarbamate complex. Furthermore, inductively coup

Isolation and Reactivity of Tetrylene-Tetrylone-Iron Complexes Supported by Bis(N-Heterocyclic Imine) Ligands.

The germanium iron carbonyl complex 3 was prepared by the reaction of dimeric chloro(imino)germylene [IPrNGeCl]2 (IPrN=bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin-2-iminato) with one equivalent of Collman's reagent (Na2 Fe(CO)4 ) at room temperature. Similarly, the reaction of chloro(imino)stannylene [IPrNSnCl]2 with Na2 Fe(CO)4 (1 equiv) resulted in the Fe(CO)4 -bridged bis(stannylene) complex 4. We observed reversible formation of bis(tetrylene) and tetrylene-tetrylone character in complexes 3 vs. 5 and 4 vs. 6, which was supported by DFT calculations. Moreover, the Li/Sn/Fe trimetallic complex 12

Low strength wastewater anammox start-up and stable operation by inoculating sponge-iron sludge: Cooperation of biological iron and iron bacteria.

The application of anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) technology in low-strength wastewater treatment still faces difficult in-situ start-ups and unstable operations. Sponge-iron sludge (R1) was used as a novel inoculum to provide a promising solution. Conventional activated sludge (R0) was used as the control. However, little is known about the feasibility and performance during the start-up and operation of Anammox combined with biological iron and iron bacteria in an iron sludge system. Anammox was successfully started both in R1 (87 days) and R0 (89 days) with a low-strength influent (

Weak Coordinating Character of Organosulfonates in Oriented Silica Films: An Efficient Approach for Immobilizing Cationic Metal-Transition Complexes.

Iron (II) tris(2,2'-bipyridine) complexes, [Fe(bpy)3]2+, have been synthesized and immobilized in organosulfonate-functionalized nanostructured silica thin films taking advantage of the stabilization of [Fe(H2O)6]2+ species by hydrogen bonds to the anionic sulfonate moieties grafted to the silica nanopores. In a first step, thiol-based silica films have been electrochemically generated on indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates by co-condensation of 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). Secondly, the thiol function has been modified to sulfonate by chemical oxidation

Indium Recovery by Adsorption on MgFe2O4 Adsorbents.

Indium and its compounds have many industrial applications and are widely used in the manufacture of liquid crystal displays, semiconductors, low temperature soldering, and infrared photodetectors. Indium does not have its own minerals in the Earth's crust, and most commonly, indium is associated with the ores of zinc, lead, copper and tin. Therefore, it must be recovered as a by-product from other metallurgical processes or from secondary raw materials. The aim of this study is to investigate the adsorption properties for recovering indium from aqueous solutions using iron-magnesium composite

Molecular Basis for the Interaction of Catalase with d-Penicillamine: Rationalization of Some of Its Deleterious Effects.

d-Penicillamine (d-Pen) is a sulfur compound used in the management of rheumatoid arthritis, Wilson's disease (WD), and alcohol dependence. Many side effects are associated with its use, particularly after long-term treatment. However, the molecular basis for such side effects is poorly understood. Based on the well-known oxidase activity of hemoproteins and the participation of catalase in cellular H2O2 redox signaling, we posit that d-Pen could inactivate catalase, thus disturbing H2O2 levels. Herein, we report on the molecular basis that could partly explain the side effects associated with

Photobio-electrocatalytic production of H2 using fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) electrodes covered with a NiO-In2S3 p-n junction and NiFeSe hydrogenase.

Clean energy vectors are needed towards a fossil fuel-free society, diminishing both greenhouse effect and pollution. Electrochemical water splitting is a clean route to obtain green hydrogen, the cleanest fuel; although efficient electrocatalysts are required to avoid high overpotentials in this process. The combination of inorganic semiconductors with biocatalysts for photoelectrochemical H2 production is an alternative approach to overcome this challenge. N-type semiconductors can be coupled to a co-catalyst for H2 production in the presence of a sacrificial electron donor in solution, but

Flocculation synergistic with nano zero-valent iron augmented attapulgite @ chitosan as Fenton-like catalyst for the treatment of landfill leachate.

In this study, nano-zero-valent iron (NZVI) was added to attapulgite/chitosan and used as a catalyst in the heterogeneous Fenton process to degrade stabilized landfill leachate. Landfill leachate has serious environmental impacts due to the complexity and diversity of its pollutants. A magnetic catalyst (NZVI@PATP/CS) was prepared by a liquid-phase reduction method. The NZVI@PATP/CS were characterized by XRD, FTIR and SEM. The pH of leachate and the dosage of catalyst and H2O2 were changed to determine the best-operating conditions for the effective removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and

Effect of the interaction of fulvic acid with Pb(II) on the distribution of Pb(II) between solid and liquid phases of four minerals.

Lead (Pb) is one of the top metal pollutants worldwide, and its distribution between liquid and solid phases of soils is strongly controlled by its adsorption on minerals, organic matter, and their composites. This paper presented the effect of fulvic acid (FA) coexistence on the distribution of Pb(II) at the solid-liquid interface of four minerals, which provided reference for how to use humic substances to remove toxic Pb(II) in soils. The free Pb2+ of suspensions, measured by Pb ion selective electrode, was used to characterize the complexation of FA with Pb2+ at various pH. The adsorption

Molecular Insights into Roles of Dissolved Organic Matter in Cr(III) Immobilization by Coprecipitation with Fe(III) Probed by STXM-Ptychography and XANES Spectroscopy.

The coprecipitation of heavy metals (HMs) with Fe(III) in the presence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a crucial process to control the mobility of HMs in the environment, but its underlying immobilization mechanisms are unclear. In this study, Cr(III) immobilization by coprecipitation with Fe(III) in the presence of straw-derived DOMs under different Fe/C molar ratios, pHs, and ionic strengths was investigated using scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) and ptychography and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. The results showed that Cr(III) retention was en

Mechanisms of chromium(VI) removal from solution by zeolite and vermiculite modified with iron(II).

Mechanisms of Cr(VI) reduction by Fe(II) modified zeolite (clinoptilolite/mordenite) and vermiculite were evaluated. Adsorbents were treated with Fe(SO4)·7H2O to saturate their exchange sites with Fe(II). However, this treatment decreased their CEC and pHPZC, probably due to the dealumination process. Vermiculite (V-Fe) adsorbed more Fe(II) (21.8 mg g-1) than zeolite (Z-Fe) (15.1 mg g-1). Z-Fe and V-Fe were used to remove Cr(VI) from solution in a batch test to evaluate the effect of contact time and the initial concentration of Cr(VI). The Cr(VI) was 100% reduced to Cr(III) by Z-Fe and V-Fe i

Interaction of norfloxacin and hexavalent chromium with ferrihydrite nanoparticles: Synergistic adsorption and antagonistic aggregation behavior.

The co-existence of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and norfloxacin (NOR) can be detected in natural environments. However, the interaction of the co-existing Cr(VI), NOR and ferrihydrite nanoparticles (FNPs, a ubiquitous natural iron oxide nanoparticle) is lacking investigation. Figuring out this interaction could help us better predict the transport and fate of the relevant contaminants. Here, the adsorption and aggregation of FNPs in the presence of Cr(VI) and NOR were investigated. Comparing to FNPs interaction with Cr(VI) or NOR alone, the co-existence of Cr(VI) and NOR could lead to a syner

Influence of dissolved organic matter, kaolinite, and iron oxides on aggregation and transport of biochar colloids in aqueous and soil environments.

The aggregation and transport of biochar colloids (BCs) in the soil and groundwater are critical for applying biochar in the field and assessing long-term environmental risk. This research aimed to study the influence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) with different molecular weights (including humic acid, HA; bovine serum albumin, BSA; deoxyribonucleic acid, DNA) and three minerals (including kaolinite, goethite, and hematite) on the aggregation and transport behaviors of BCs. The adsorption of DOM on the surface of BCs increased the stability, inhibited aggregation, and promoted the transpor
