Functional differences of anti-T-cell antibody in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and ulcerative colitis.

The loss of suppressor T-cell function results in an abundant production of autoantibodies in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). As a cause of this suppressor T-cell defect, anti-T-cell antibody seems to be of prime importance. On the other hand, anti-T-cell antibodies can be detected in various other autoimmune diseases, but their functional characteristics have not been determined. In the present study, the functional characteristics of anti-T-cell antibody from a selected subgroup of patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) were compared with those from patients with SLE. Anti-T-cell antibody

Protein utilization and toxic effects of raw beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) for young pigs.

One balance trial and two pair-feeding experiments were conducted to determine the effects of feeding raw small red beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) on dietary protein utilization, organ weights, pancreatic enzyme activities, blood variables and weight gain of young pigs. In the balance trial, the substitution of 5 and 15% raw beans for soybean meal and cornstarch in the semipurified diet depressed apparent digestibilities of crude protein, total S and all individual amino acids measured. Urinary excretion of N and sulfate was increased and N retention was decreased. Pigs fed a semipurified diet con

The effect of vasopressin on oxygen availability.

Vasopressin has been used with increasing frequency to control gastrointestinal bleeding, the beneficial effect being attributed to marked splanchnic vasoconstriction. Because vasopressin may result in impaired cardiac function and because other potent vasoconstrictive substances have been shown to increase the pulmonary shunt and decrease arterial oxygenation, this study was undertaken to determind the effect of vasopressin on oxygen availability. Ten healthy anesthetized mechanically ventilated dogs received a five hour intravenous vasopressin infusion, 0.005 U/kg/min. The heart rate decreas

Role of the kidney and lung in the handling of prostaglandin E in hemorrhagic shock.

The polyuria and hyposthenuria noted particularly following blood transfusion after prolonged periods of hypotension (dog, monkey) seem best explained by a prostaglandin-antidiuretic hormone (PG-ADH) antagonism, operating primarily in the renal medulla. The kidney releases greatly enhanced amounts of PGE at this time, which probably act primarily in the renal medulla, then secondarily influence the systemic (arterial) levels by passing in greater amounts through the lungs. The lungs normally metabolize the major portion of PGs delivered to them. Our data suggest impairment of the lung's "up-ta

Catecholamines and renal water excretion.

The in vivo mechanisms whereby systemic alpha- and beta-adrenergic stimulation exert opposing effects on renal water excretion are reviewed. An extrarenal mechanism is suggested since the effect of intravenous infusion of norepinephrine or isoproterenol on water excretion cannot be mimicked by the intrarenal administration of these agents. A ROLE OF VASOPRESSIN IS IMPLICATED SINCE NEITHER MAN NOR DOG WITHOUT A PITUITARY SOURCE OF VASOPRESSIN DEMONSTRATE THE SAME EFFECT OF CATECHOLAMINES ON WATER EXCRETION AS OBSERVED IN INTACT MAN AND DOG. Evidence also is presented that systemic alpha- and be

Diuretic and antihypertensive actions of furosemide.

Furosemide (4 - chloro - N - (2 - furyl - methyl) - 5 - sulfamoylanthranilic acid) caused a prompt increase in sodium, potassium, and chloride excretions in patients with chronic congestive heart failure. Doses of 50, 100, and 200 mg orally produced progressively increasing diuretic responses. When given over a period of one week to patients with essential hypertension, furosemide in doses of 100 to 200 mg orally per day caused a significant decrease in systolic and diastolic pressure. A significant lowering of blood pressure was also demonstrated in hypertensive patients treated with furosemi
