Changes in estimated glomerular filtration rate in patients administered proton pump inhibitors: a single-center cohort study.

Proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use may be associated with renal dysfunction. Renal dysfunction in PPI users requires evaluation of development and progression risks simultaneously, using estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) slope, which indicates changes in eGFR per year. To the best of our knowledge, no studies have evaluated eGFR slope in PPI users. This study investigated the association between PPI use and renal dysfunction using eGFR slope. A single-center cohort study was conducted using the health records data at Hamamatsu University Hospital in Japan. Participants were defined as f

H2 antihistamines: May be useful for combination therapies in cancer?

Cancer morbimortality is still a great concern despite advances in research and therapies. Histamine and its receptors' ligands can modulate different biological responses according to the cell type and the receptor subtype involved. Besides the wide variety of histamine functions in normal tissues, diverse roles in the acquisition of hallmarks of cancer such as sustained proliferative signaling, resistance to cell death, angiogenesis, metastasis, altered immunity and modified microenvironment have been described. This review summarizes the present knowledge of the various roles of histamine H

Overlapping approach Proton Pump Inhibitors/Nux vomica-Heel as new intervention for gastro-esophageal reflux management: Delphi consensus study.

BACKGROUND: Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) may affect the upper digestive tract; up to 20% of population in Western nations are affected by GERD. Antacids, histamine H2-receptor antagonists, and Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) are considered the referring medications for GERD. Nevertheless, PPIs must be managed carefully because their use, especially chronic, could be linked with some adverse effects. An effective and safe alternative pharmacological tool for GERD is needed. After the identification of potentially new medications to flank PPIs, it is mandatory to revise and improve good

Gastroesophageal reflux disease in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is one of the most common comorbidities of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Decreased lower and upper esophageal sphincter pressures, esophageal dysmotility, high transdiaphragmatic pressure, and decreased saliva secretion have been implicated as mechanisms leading to the development of GERD in COPD. Clinically, comorbid GERD in COPD is reportedly associated with worse symptoms, quality of life, and lung function, as well as a high risk of exacerbations. Aspiration of regurgitation and the cholinergic-mediated esophagobronchial reflex play a

Hospitalized patients on proton pump inhibitors for stress ulcer prophylaxis have a higher risk of Clostridioides difficile infection compared with those on histamine-2 receptor antagonists.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies on Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) in proton pump inhibitor (PPI) users generally enrolled a heterogeneous population and did not include a control group of histamine H2 receptor antagonists (H2RAs) users or adjust for confounding variables, such as previous antibiotics. It is uncertain whether hospitalized patients using PPIs for stress ulcer prophylaxis (SUP) are at a higher risk of CDI compared with those using H2RAs. This study aimed to compare the association between CDI and the usage of antisecretory drugs (ASDs): PPIs and H2RAs, for SUP among hospit

Histamine H2 Receptor Antagonists in the Treatment and Prevention of Heart Failure.

Despite advancements in the treatment of heart failure (HF) and modest improvements in survival rates over the past few decades, mortality rate remains significantly high. HF not only imposes a significant economic burden on patients' families but also presents a substantial challenge to society at large. Therefore, effective treatment and prevention strategies are crucial. Numerous studies have demonstrated that histamine H2 receptor antagonists (H2RAs) can benefit patients with HF through various mechanisms. These mechanisms encompass promoting sodium and water excretion, vasodilation, enhan

Acid suppressants reduce the therapeutic effect of immune checkpoint inhibitors and increase the risk of acute kidney injury: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are used in cancer immunotherapy; however, they can lead to immune-related adverse events (irAEs) through immune function of patients. Therefore, this meta-analysis aimed to assess the concomitant effect of acid suppressants (ASs) on ICIs, including several subgroup analyses. METHODS: We identified related studies and generated the forest plot. The primary endpoint was defined as the change in progression free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) with or without ASs administration. We also evaluated the effect of ASs on the incidence of irAE

Antioxidant and Anti-Glycation Potential of H2 Receptor Antagonists-In Vitro Studies and a Systematic Literature Review.

Background: Histamine H2 receptor antagonists are a group of drugs that inhibit gastric juice secretion in gastrointestinal diseases. However, there is evidence to suggest that H2 blockers have a broader spectrum of activity. The antioxidant properties of H2 blockers have not been fully elucidated, and their anti-glycation potential has not been studied to date. Therefore, this is the first study to compare the antioxidant and antiglycation potentials of the most popular H2 antagonists (ranitidine, cimetidine, and famotidine) on protein glycoxidation in vitro. Methods: Bovine serum albumin (BS

The evaluation of the association between the prevalence and patterns of computed tomography findings of cryptogenic organizing pneumonia, and neutrophil/lymphocyte and platelet/lymphocyte ratios.

This study presents new findings based on a large-scale analysis of butterfly genomic sequences. Focusing on species identification through comparative genomics, we define subspecies as populations differentiated to a lesser extent than distinct species ("species in the making"). Additionally, we propose further adjustments to the current butterfly classification. As a result, 3 subgenera, 12 species, and 4 subspecies are described as new. New subgenera are (type species in parenthesis): Hyalaus Grishin, subgen. n. (Papilio epidaus E. Doubleday, 1846) of Eurytides Hübner, [1821] (Papilionidae

Association of proton pump inhibitor and histamine H2-receptor antagonists with restless legs syndrome.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common sensorimotor disorder, which can disrupt sleep and is thought to be caused in part by low cellular iron stores. Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) and histamine H2-receptor antagonists (H2A) are among the most commonly used drugs worldwide and show evidence of causing iron deficiency. We conducted a case/non-case observational study of blood donors in the United States (N = 13,403; REDS-III) and Denmark (N = 50,323; Danish Blood Donor Study, DBDS), both of which had complete blood count measures and a completed RLS assessment via the Cambridge-Hopkins RLS que
