Medicinal plants as alternative and adjunct antimicrobial agents in ear, nose, and throat (ENT) Infections.

Medicinal plants are widely used worldwide for ear, nose, and throat (ENT) disorders and have a long history of traditional application. This review aims to summarize current experimental and clinical evidence on medicinal plants used for ENT conditions such as otitis externa/media, tinnitus, vertigo, allergic rhinitis, pharyngitis, and laryngitis, and to support the identification of new plant species with antimicrobial potential against ENT pathogens. This review thoroughly summarizes recent developments from 2020 to 2025 and was conducted using electronic databases, including PubMed, Web of

[Topical Therapy of Otitis Externa: Potential Use of Combined Preparations].

AIM: To assess the potential use of a combined topical preparation in the form of ear drops containing chloramphenicol, clotrimazole, beclomethasone dipropionate, and lidocaine in the treatment of patients with acute otitis externa, based on the clinical presentation and characteristics of the microbiological profile. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of medical records of 168 patients with acute otitis externa over a 5-year period was performed. The study included children older than 6 years and adult patients. All patients underwent otorhinolaryngological examination, culture-

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF CHANGES IN QUALITY OF LIFE INDICATORS AS A METHOD FOR ASSESSING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ENT HERBAL REMEDIES.

Ear, nose, and throat (ENT) diseases cause major disruption in patients' daily lives. Self-medication with conventional and herbal drugs are common in ENT patients. Recent studies reported that the ENT patients' self-medication with conventional medication ranged from 79.1-83.0%. It is also reported that the rate of herbal drug utilization among ENT patients ranges from 2-63% in different nations. The research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of "Herbanoma" as a Phyto preparation for ENT diseases according to the prognostic clinical significance of changes in quality-of-life parameters. The

Nose to Brain: Exploring the Progress of Intranasal Delivery of Solid Lipid Nanoparticles and Nanostructured Lipid Carriers.

The intranasal (IN) route of drug delivery can effectively penetrate the blood-brain barrier and deliver drugs directly to the brain for the treatment of central nervous system (CNS) disorders via intra-neuronal or extra-neuronal pathways. This approach has several advantages, including avoidance of first-pass metabolism, high bioavailability, ease of administration, and improved patient compliance. In recent years, an increasing number of studies have been conducted using drugs encapsulated in solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) and nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs), and delivering them to th

[Otorhinolaryngological diseases in pregnancy-which drugs are approved?].

Between 1958 and 1961 approximately 10,000 children with severe deformities of extremities were born, whose mothers had taken the sedative thalidomide. Since then, drugs in pregnancy are applied with legitimate caution by the pharmaceutical industry, physicians and patients, although often accompanied by irrational panic. The pharmaceutical industry takes a legally safe position noting "contraindication" or at least "strict indication" in the consumer information. This transfers responsibility to the prescribing doctor. Even without drug therapy, the spontaneous malformation rate is approx. 3

Synergistic combination of PEGylated selenium nanoparticles and X-ray-induced radiotherapy for enhanced anticancer effect in human lung carcinoma.

In this study, PEGylated selenium nanoparticles (PSNP) was successfully prepared and combined with X-ray for effective anticancer efficacy in lung cancer cells. The particles were nanosized and observed in spherical shape. The combination of PSNP and X-ray effectively killed the cancer cells and decreased the cell viability in a concentration dependent manner. PSNP combined with X-ray showed a significantly higher apoptosis of cancer cells with around 23% of cells in late apoptosis stage. Consistently, Caspase-3 activity was significantly higher when exposed to X-ray than in the absence of X-r

[Oral therapy algorithm for the treatment of postoperative pain. A prospective observational study].

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pain continues to be undermanaged, at least in part, due to inadequate organization and lack of use of opioids. Especially patients who do not receive consultation from an acute pain service and are therefore not eligible to receive regional anesthesia techniques or patient-controlled devices suffer from severe pain after surgery. The aim of the present prospective observational study was to assess the efficacy and feasibility of an analgesia algorithm for this subgroup of patients. METHODS: An oral opioid concept including controlled-release (cr) oxycodone, immediat

[Management of patients with risk factors].

This review deals with concomitant diseases and risk factors in patients treated for otorhinolaryngologic disease in outpatient and hospital services. Besides heart disease, lung disease, liver disease and kidney disease this article also covers disorders of coagulation (including the therapy with new anticoagulant drugs) of electrolyte hemostasis. Special attention is paid to prophylaxis, diagnosis and treatment of delirium. Also information is provided to optimize preparation of surgical procedures and pharmacotherapy.

[Capillary ENT hemangioma].

Capillary hemangioma is considered to be one of the most widespread (frequently occurring) vascular ENT tumours. These neoplasms are usually localized in the nasal cavity, sometimes in the larynx or pharynx, and rarely in the outer or middle ear. The principal method for the treatment of this pathology is surgical intervention. Tumour destruction by laser and radiowave radiation finding wide application for the removal of hemangiomas does not substantially lighten the work of a surgeon; moreover the use of these tools is fraught with a high risk of serious intra- and postoperative complication

[Phytomedicine in otorhinolaryngology - evidence-based medicine with medicinal plants].

Phytomedicine has become an increasingly important treatment option for patients in the western world. Patients who experienced failure or adverse reactions with conventional western medicine often switch to natural and holistic methods. In eastern countries, with their long history of traditional medicine, patients often resort to herbal preparations as the majority of western medicines are unaffordable. The desire of western physicians for evidence-based medicine also applies in the sector of phytomedicine. A serious perception of natural products in scientific medicine can therefore only be

[Chemical content analysis of specimens of human head temporal portion commercially distributed for otological surgery lessons].

Specimens of the human head temporal portion are provided in the United States and distributed commercially for lessons in otological surgery via the internet. Many otologists have obtained and used these specimens in Japan. According to our chemical content analysis, these specimens were found to contain harmful substances as well as large molecule aldehydes and fatty acid methylesters, which are not or only rarely included in the human cadaveric specimens prepared in Japan. We discuss the suggested treatment of these imported specimens, how trial preparation of specimens are much better than

Traditional management of ear, nose and throat (ENT) diseases in Central Kenya.

Diseases of ear, nose and throat (ENT) often have serious consequences including hearing impairment, and emotional strain that lower the quality of life of patients. In Kenya, upper respiratory infections are among the most common infections encountered in outpatient facilities. Some of these infections are becoming difficult to control because some of the causing microorganisms have acquired antibiotic resistance and hence the need to develop new drugs with higher efficacy. Ethnobotanical studies have now been found to be instrumental in improving chances of discovering plants with antimicrob

OBJECTIVE: To observe the action of Chinese herbal preparation (CHP) on the recovery of nasal sinus mucosa after endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). METHODS: Seventy-eight patients (140 sinus) with chronic nasosinusitis and nasal polyps, who had undergone ESS, were divided into two groups. The 40 patients (70 sinuses) in the experiment group were treated with daily nasal flushing with diluted CHP while the 38 patients (70 sinuses) in the control group were untreated. Tissues of nasal mucosa were taken out from patients' posterior walls of maxillary sinus at different time points, i. e. 2 - 3 week
