STUDY OBJECTIVES: This study examined associations between filled prescription medications (FPMs) and sleep duration, insomnia, and sleep apnea (SA).
METHODS: Active-duty service members (SMs) (n = 20,819) completed a questionnaire on sleep, demographics, and lifestyle characteristics and permitted access to their pharmacy and medical records 6-months before questionnaire completion. FPMs were classified by American Hospital Formulary System Pharmacologic-Therapeutic Classification System (PTCS) codes and compared across sleep durations of ≥7, 5-6, and ≤4 h and among those with and without di

This cross-sectional investigation examined associations between body mass index (BMI) and filled prescription medications (FPMs) among military service members (SMs). A stratified random sample of active duty SMs was obtained from military workforce records. Participants (n = 26,117) completed a questionnaire on demographics and lifestyle factors and their FPMs were obtained from the military Pharmacy Data Transaction Service. Medications were classified by their American Hospital Formulary System Pharmacologic-Therapeutic Classification System (PTCS) codes. FPMs across PTCS codes were compar

There are few reports on drug utilization and drug-drug interactions in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) in Egypt. A total of 94 patients participated in this retrospective observational study. Patient's medical records were used to collect demographics, medical history, admission and discharge dates and medications used. The mean ± SD of the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) scores was 9.9 ± 4.4 and the median length of stay was 7 days (range 1-47 days). The total number of prescribed medications ranged from 4-29 with a mean ± SD of 14.1 ± 5.5 medications per patient. The top three most prescribed categori

Non-nutritive sweeteners are the most widely used food additives designed to provide sweetness and reduce caloric intake. Studies have confirmed a link between sweeteners and colitis, yet supporting scientific data remain exiguous and controversial. In this study, three common sweeteners (Saccharin sodium, Stevioside, and Sucralose) in acceptable daily intake dosage were added to water in order to determine their effects on dextran sodium sulfate-induced colitis in mice. Our results show that the three sweeteners meliorate colitis to varying degrees─Saccharin exerts the most pronounced effect,

OBJECTIVE: The intent of this project was to objectively describe the frequency of pharmacist prescribing in acute care pediatrics and neonatology and to determine the medications most often prescribed by pharmacists practicing in a jurisdiction that permits pharmacists' prescribing.
METHODS: This was a subgroup analysis of a retrospective observational study using prescribing data from an electronic medical record system used in 5 acute care hospitals (1 pediatric, 4 primarily adult but with pediatric and neonatal units) within Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
RESULTS: Considering orders for pedia

BACKGROUND: Like many payers, the Department of Defense (DoD) has limited ability to work directly with prescribers to ensure appropriate medication use. Many older beneficiaries are prescribed multiple maintenance medications, placing them at higher risk for adverse drug interactions, contraindicated medication use, and other polypharmacy-related problems. Medication reviews may mitigate these risks, but the optimal venue for medication therapy management is unclear.
OBJECTIVES: To (a) determine if beneficiaries will respond to a mailed request from the DoD to pursue a medication review; (b)

In a 7-d dry immersion experiment normal volunteers were given meals prepared with account of personal body mass and caloric demand. Water, salt and calcium consumption with foods and beverages was calculated. The bath water was controlled within the range of comfortable temperatures. Investigated were osmoregulation and renal excretory function, circulating plasma volumes, and O2 transport by erythrocytes. Besides, functional state of cutaneous microcirculation was assessed using the laser-Doppler-iontophoresis in vivo with acetylcholine and nitroprusside. Dry immersion consistently accelerat

A program for reviewing medication doses returned to the pharmacy department is described. Discrepancies concerning returned doses at a teaching hospital led to the creation of a returned-dose log sheet. A pharmacist enters the patient's name, medication, and administration schedule and forwards a copy to the charge nurse on the patient's unit, who records the reasons for the return. A pharmacist then uses the form to resolve any discrepancies in the pharmacy records and follows up if necessary. Monthly summaries of the forms are prepared. After a pilot phase and educational feedback, the rate

The purpose of the study was to explore drug use of elderly incontinent female nursing home residents, to identify potential drug--drug interactions, and to identify the number and categories of drugs taken having the potential to cause urinary incontinence. The medication administration records of 84 female residents were examined. The drugs were categorized by therapeutic classification as designated by the American Hospital Formulary Service. Potential drug--drug interactions were identified using The Hansten Drug Interaction Knowledge Base Program, a microcomputer version of Hansten's (198

The potential utility of glycerol as an osmotic agent for peritoneal dialysis was evaluated by conducting both isosmotic and hyperosmotic exchanges in anesthetized rats. Similar exchanges were conducted using glucose, and the results with the two agents were compared. During hyperosmotic exchanges both agents produced significant osmotic flow of water, but at initial molar concentrations that were equal the flow observed with glycerol was nearly 40% less than that observed with glucose. The lower volume transport generated by glycerol was found to be due to its surprisingly rapid removal from

The evidence for the participation of signals from the gastrointestinal tract in hunger and satiety is reviewed. Various methods of subjecting only certain portions of the gastrointestinal tract to food are described including sham feeding, crossing of the intestines of two animals, and intragastric, intraduodenal and intravenous feeding. These methods have revealed that animals eat more when only the mouth is exposed to food, but consume less when food enters the stomach directly and still less when feeding themselves intravenously. The role of the stomach in satiety is discussed in relation
