Deep Eutectic Solvent- and Ionic Liquid-Based Surfactant-Free Microemulsion Stabilized by H-Bonded Clusters: Interfacial Stabilization and Superactivity of Cytochrome-c.

The need to develop novel and sustainable media without using conventional surfactants has driven the development of surfactant-free microemulsions (SFMEs). Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and ionic liquids (ILs) are great alternatives to conventional organic solvents, using which SFMEs can be prepared. Herein, an SFME has been prepared using a DES based on the natural components L-arginine and lactic acid as the polar phase; 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonylimide), a hydrophobic ionic liquid (HIL), as the nonpolar phase; and ethanol as an amphiphile. The SFME has been duly

Periodic Thermal Oscillation Induces Mesoscale Soft Aggregates in a Fully Miscible Ethanol-Water Liquid.

Inducing and stabilizing mesoscale structures in fully miscible molecular liquids remains challenging because local heterogeneity is usually transient and rapidly averaged out. Here, we show that periodic thermal oscillation drives a 50% (v/v) ethanol-water mixture along a traceable nonequilibrium ordering pathway from transient ethanol-water clusters to kinetically stabilized soft aggregates. The system evolves from initial clusters to water-containing droplets as liquid-liquid microphase-separated intermediates, then to ethanol-rich acicular flakes, and ultimately to micron-scale flake-stack

Overexpression of endogenous aldehyde:ferredoxin oxidoreductase genes enhances ethanol biosynthesis in Clostridium autoethanogenum.

Bioethanol is a promising renewable fuel that mitigates dependence on fossil resources. As a potential candidate for bioethanol production, the homoacetogen Clostridium autoethanogenum is capable of metabolizing diverse carbon substrates, such as syngas components (CO and/or CO2/H2) and xylose. Since acetate formation is energetically favored over ethanol synthesis in acetogens, reassimilation of acetate through the aldehyde:ferredoxin oxidoreductase (AOR) pathway offers a feasible approach to enhance ethanol production. To improve AOR activity, two endogenous aor genes (CAETHG_0092 and CAETHG

Toward Cadaveric Proteomics: A Theoretical Framework for Mass Spectrometry Analysis of Embalmed Human Tissues.

Mass spectrometry-based proteomics has been applied with considerable success to the analysis of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues, and this success raises the question of whether the same methods can be applied to the embalmed human cadaveric specimens that are used in anatomical education and research. In this review, a theoretical framework is presented for the application of proteomic methods to embalmed cadaveric tissues, in which the feasibility of the approach is evaluated on the basis of the methods that have been established for FFPE tissue, and the critical gaps in the

Cosolvents induce sharp softening and RNA-like twist-stretch coupling of RNA-DNA hybrid.

Cellular environments generally contain abundant organic cosolvents, yet how in-cell cosolvents modulate the mechanics of RNA-DNA hybrid (RDH) duplex remains unclear. Here, we combined high-precision magnetic tweezer experiments with all-atom molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the structural elasticity of RDH duplexes using PEG200, PEG1000, and ethanol as model cosolvents. We found that high-concentration cosolvents sharply soften RDH duplexes in bending and induce an apparent RNA-like positive twist-stretch coupling. Specifically, for RDH duplex, the bending persistence length P de

Surface morphology-driven gas sensing performance of CdS-modified TiO2 thick film: a study based on fractal concepts.

In recent years, gas sensors have played a crucial role in gas detection technologies, largely due to the increased surface area of their sensing films. The concept of fractals was applied to quantify surface characteristics such as roughness, surface area, and fractal dimension. This approach was employed to enhance sensing performance by informing the design of sensor microstructures. In this study, we investigate how CdS incorporation into TiO2 affects the fractal characteristics of the fabricated films and analyse the correlation between these properties and performance in detecting volati

Choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvents for efficient anthocyanin recovery from black rice: process, kinetics and nanoliposomal formulation.

This study investigated the recovery and nanoliposomal formulation of anthocyanin-rich extracts from black rice using choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs). Choline chloride/1,2-propanediol (DES2) produced the highest anthocyanin content, 85.5 ± 3.4 mg l-1, after optimization, compared with 25.7 ± 2.1 mg l-1 obtained by conventional ethanol extraction. High-resolution QTOF-MS/MS enabled the tentative assignment of cyanidin 3-O-hexoside-type and peonidin 3-O-hexoside-type compounds based on accurate precursor masses and characteristic product ions; authentic-standard confirmation

Identifying irregular gasoline and ethanol blends in Brazil using a Love-wave sensor.

The quality control of commercial fuels is of paramount importance for ensuring regulatory compliance, engine performance and consumer protection. In Brazil, the composition of gasoline and anhydrous ethanol fuel blends is subject to specific regulatory requirements, and deviations from the prescribed proportions may compromise fuel quality and facilitate economically motivated adulteration. This study proposes a preliminary methodology for the identification of irregularities in binary gasoline and anhydrous ethanol fuel blends based on a Love-wave sensor. The proposed approach exploits the m

Pyrrolidone-Bridged Ag-Cu2O Heterointerfaces Enable Selective C-C Coupling for Efficient Electrochemical CO2 Reduction.

Cu2O-derived catalysts are promising for electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2RR) because Cu+ sites and dynamically reconstructed Cu+/Cu0 interfaces can stabilize CO-derived intermediates and facilitate C-C coupling toward C2+ products. However, their C2+ selectivity remains limited despite advances in morphology and surface engineering. Here, we propose a dual-modification strategy by co-engineering Cu2O with Ag and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). Ag increases local CO coverage, while PVP modulates the electronic structure of Cu/Ag sites, jointly promoting C-C coupling. This synergistic interface es

Preparation artefacts mask the detectability of crosslinking-induced structural changes in electron microscopy of collagen hydrogels.

Collagen hydrogels are widely used as biomimetic three-dimensional matrices whose mechanical behaviour depends strongly on fibrillar micro- and nanoarchitecture and crosslinking state. Electron microscopy offers high spatial resolution for structural analysis, but sample preparation can substantially distort highly hydrated collagen networks, thereby confounding interpretation. Here, we compared common SEM and TEM preparation workflows for their ability to preserve structurally subtle, mechanically validated differences in collagen type I hydrogels. Collagen hydrogels containing riboflavin wer

Investigating metal, glucose, and inhibitory compound levels through food waste hydrolysate dilution and pH adjustment to enhance dark fermentation performance.

Food waste hydrolysate (FWH) produced by dilute H2SO4 thermohydrolysis is a promising substrate for dark fermentation (DF), but its performance can be unstable due to interactions among nutrients (metals and glucose) and inhibitory compounds such as 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and furfural. This study investigates the effects of FWH dilution (D0-D4) and initial pH (6-9) on its composition and DF performance. Key parameters included the level of metal ions (Fe, Mg, and Ca), glucose equivalent, HMF, and furfural, which influence hydrogen yield (HY). ANOVA showed that FWH dilution and initial p

Estimated incidence and number of new cases with prenatal alcohol exposure and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders in Finland 1990-2025.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) arising from prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) are the leading preventable cause of neurobehavioral disorders. Early pregnancy is particularly vulnerable to ethanol toxicity, yet alcohol use often continues until pregnancy recognition. In Finland, national incidence estimates of PAE and FASD remain limited. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the incidence of any PAE and heavy PAE in Finland between 1990 and 2025, and to model the annual number of children with FASD born in Finland. METHODS: We developed a mathematical modelling framework integrating stud

Hydrogen Bond Network Descriptors Dictate Reactivity and Selectivity of CO2 Electroreduction.

The hydrogen bond network (HBN) of water plays a key role in the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). However, a systematic understanding of the HBN and the establishment of predictive descriptors remain lacking, which hinders the rational design of effective electrochemical systems. In this work, two descriptors, hydrogen bond (HB) strength and HB number, are introduced to characterize the flexibility and connectivity of the HBN, respectively. By adding a series of urea derivatives to the electrolyte, both HB strength and HB number can be continuously tuned, enabling precise modul

Supercritical Solvothermal Synthesis of Spinel ZnV2O4/Porous Carbon Composite Cathodes for Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries.

The electrochemical performance of vanadium-based oxide cathodes in aqueous zinc-ion batteries has long been constrained by their intrinsically low electronic conductivity, severe vanadium dissolution, and prolonged synthesis procedures. To address these limitations, a supercritical solvothermal strategy is developed for the rapid fabrication of a high-performance spinel-structured ZnV2O4/porous carbon (ZnV2O4/PRC) composite. Benefiting from the excellent mass transfer and heat transfer characteristics and mild reducing capability of supercritical ethanol, this approach effectively suppresses

A self-matching antibacterial coating of nano-copper oxide@dealkaline lignin/citric acid with reusable on-demand antibacterial interface protection.

The adhesion and proliferation of bacteria on object surfaces can lead to grain waste and health risks. Lignin, as a byproduct of the papermaking and biorefining industries, exhibits significant potential for the development of sustainable materials. In this paper, we utilize dealkaline lignin to green-regulate the morphology of nano‑copper oxide, enhancing its dispersion and stability, with the aim of developing a novel green antibacterial coating. On the one hand, the dealkaline lignin forms an organic protective layer on the surface of CuO NPs, effectively promoting the dispersion and stabi

Phytase-loaded core-shell microparticles for enzyme stabilization using ethanol anti-solvent precipitation.

In plant-based diets, phytate reduces the adsorption of minerals. Fortifying foods with phytase can improve mineral bioavailability by hydrolyzing phytate. However, phytase is susceptible to environmental stress such as heat and acidic conditions encountered during food processing. A core-shell microparticle composed of a phytase-chitosan core and a shell consisting of cross-linked alginate-κ-carrageenan was developed using ethanol anti-solvent precipitation. The ethanol concentration, phytase-to-chitosan ratio, and alginate-κ-carrageenan concentration were evaluated to produce stable core-she
