Synergistic influence of temperature and 6PPD-Q on the development of Arctic Charr larvae: Differential effects between populations from Lakes Geneva and Annecy.

Freshwater ecosystems are experiencing significant biodiversity loss due to multiple anthropogenic stressors, including temperature fluctuations and chemical pollutants such as 6PPD-quinone (6PPD-Q), a toxic byproduct of tire wear. 6PPD-Q is known for its lethal effects on species like coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and could pose considerable risks even at environmentally relevant concentrations. However, little is known about how 6PPD-Q interacts with warming to affect cold-water fish, especially during sensitive early life stages. Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus), a species endemic to

Unveiling the structural evolution and molecular assembly in ethanol-induced gelation of tamarind seed polysaccharide.

Tamarind seed polysaccharide (TSP) can form gels in the presence of ethanol, yet the underlying structural mechanism remains unclear. Here, ethanol-induced TSP gelation was investigated by combining rheology, micro-differential scanning calorimetry, atomic force microscopy, synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering, and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance. The results reveal that TSP undergoes a four-stage structural evolution during a heating-cooling cycle. At ambient temperature, ethanol reduced solvent quality and chain hydration, promoting chain association and partial precipitation.

Ordered V2O5 Nanowire Bundles Enable Self-Powered Fast-Response Photoelectrochemical UV Detection.

One-dimensional V2O5 nanostructures, with their anisotropic crystal structure, accessible oxide/electrolyte interface, and short radial carrier transport distance, are promising photoelectrode materials for photoelectrochemical (PEC) detectors. However, controllably ordered V2O5 nanowire bundles have yet to be achieved, and the photoresponse feasibility of such well-defined one-dimensional architectures requires further investigation. Herein, we present an alcohol-mediated hydrothermal approach to engineer directionally organized V2O5 nanowire bundles and subsequently evaluate the self-powered

A Thermal-Frequency Locking Method for Permanent Magnet Magnetic Resonance Systems.

Temperature-induced magnetic field drift is a dominant source of slow magnetic field variations in permanent magnet magnetic resonance (PMR) systems, resulting in line broadening, spectral distortion, and imaging artifacts. Conventional methods, such as field-frequency locking or software-based correction, require complicated additional hardware chains or suffer from limited performance. In this work, we propose a thermal-frequency locking (TFL) method to achieve long-term sub-ppm field stability. This method monitors the thermal state of the magnet array and employs a temperature-frequency pr

Ratiometric SERS Sensor with Schiff-Base Reaction and Solvent Internal Standard for High-Precision Detection of Hydrazine.

Hydrazine (N2H4) is a widely used industrial chemical yet poses severe toxicity risks to human health and ecological systems. It is highly urgent to develop rapid, reliable, and accurate analytical methods for trace N2H4 monitoring. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) offers distinct advantages for trace analysis owing to its fingerprint specificity and ultrahigh sensitivity. However, conventional SERS strategies for hydrazine detection often suffer from poor signal reproducibility and unsatisfactory quantitative accuracy. Herein, we rationally construct a robust ratiometric SERS sensor

Regulating Proton Supply for Selective Photocatalytic NO Conversion toward Pollutant Removal or Ammonia Recovery.

Controlling the conversion of nitric oxide (NO) is critical for both air pollution mitigation and nitrogen resource recovery. Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) governs photocatalytic NO reduction, where reaction pathways determine whether nitrogen is removed as inert N2 or converted into value-added NH3. However, precise control over this selectivity remains challenging, largely due to the limited understanding and regulation of proton delivery. Alcohols with different α-C-H bond strengths are demonstrated to provide tunable proton fluxes. The energetics of α-C-H bonds in alcohol proton

Ethanol-Assisted Ultrafast Quenching of Substrates Realizes Enhanced Oxygen Evolution.

The direct growth of nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) through the surface reconstruction of conductive substrates integrates the active phase with the current collector into a single electrode without any other additives and is indeed beneficial for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, in conventional electrode fabrication strategies, the simultaneous regulation of substrate reconstruction and defect-related electronic states in a very short time remains challenging. Here, an ethanol-assisted ultrafast quenching strategy is used to construct self-supported NiFe-LDH nano

Atomically Precise Copper Nanoclusters for CO2-to-C2 Electroreduction: Coupling-Site Topology, Reaction Pathways, and Active-State Evolution.

Electrochemical CO2 reduction to multicarbon products is a promising route for carbon valorization and renewable-energy storage, yet the structural heterogeneity and potential-induced reconstruction of conventional Cu catalysts obscure relationships between local motifs, C-C coupling, and product selectivity. Atomically precise Cu nanoclusters provide a structurally defined platform in which nuclearity, metal arrangement, coordination environment, and ligand shell can be systematically varied. This review organizes recent advances according to the elementary sequence of C1-intermediate generat

Temperature-Regulated Reversible QCM and MEMS Dual-Mode Gas Sensing Based on a Thermo-/Electro-Responsive Viologen-Based Cu-MOF.

Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials are often used in gas sensing and detection due to their high porosity and designable structure. However, traditional MOFs are usually only suitable for quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) mass-responsive sensing due to their poor conductivity, and are not suitable for micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) chemiresistive sensing. Designing MOF materials that combine QCM and MEMS dual-mode gas sensing has become a challenge. Herein, we designed and synthesized a viologen-based Cu-MOF material that exhibits a sensitive thermo-/electro-responsive color change

Alveolar-Inspired Negative-Pressure Soft Actuators with Integrated Actuation-Sensing.

Soft actuators show promise for soft robotics, wearables, and biomedical devices. However, existing pneumatic actuators rely on positive pressure actuation, yielding bulky, complex systems. This study presents a negative-pressure-driven soft actuator inspired by alveolar respiration. A double-layer membrane composed of a high-porosity alveolar-mimicking layer (AML) and a dense structural layer (DSL) was fabricated via an ethanol-induced porogenic method. Under negative pressure, AML microbubbles expand, driving macroscopic directional bending, constrained by the DSL. The effects of the curing

Coupled Surface and Pore Diffusion of Neutral Organic Molecules in Nanopores.

The transport of neutral organic molecules through nanoscale pores is central to a wide range of processes, yet the molecular factors governing their mobility remain difficult to predict. Here, we use all-atom molecular dynamics simulations under a nonpolarizable force field to examine the diffusion of 1,4-dioxane, phenol, ethanol, and acetonitrile in anodic aluminum oxide nanopores with diameters of 4 and 8 nm. On the basis of the decay of molecule-wall potential energy and the molecular size, we establish a 1 nm boundary to separate surface-associated diffusion from pore-interior diffusion.

Surface-Strained Intermetallic Pd3Pb Concave Nanocubes for Selective C2-Pathway Ethanol Electrooxidation.

Selective electrooxidation of ethanol to acetate via the C2 pathway offers a sustainable route to high-value chemicals, but achieving high activity and selectivity on Pd-based catalysts remains challenging. Here, we report ordered intermetallic Pd3Pb concave nanocubes (CNCs) with engineered surface strain as selective electrocatalysts for ethanol-to-acetate conversion. The Pd3Pb CNCs deliver a mass activity of 1841.7 mA mg-1 and a specific activity of 5.6 mA cm-2 in an alkaline electrolyte, outperforming Pd3Pb nanocuboids and commercial Pd/C. Notably, 1H NMR quantification reveals a faradaic e

Electrochemical Oxidation of the Benzyl Position To Form Ketones or Aldehyde Using ZnCoMnO Electrodes.

The oxidation of the benzyl position to a ketone and aldehyde demonstrates precise control over kinetic selectivity. In this study, we propose the use of a Zn0.2Co0.2Mn0.6O chemically modified electrode to achieve this oxidation. This approach utilizes an aqueous sodium chloride solution and ethanol or tetrahydrofuran as the electrolyte and solvent, respectively, and exhibits good tolerance toward various functional groups. Operating at a current density of 100 mA/cm2 with straightforward post-treatment procedures, the method shows promise for industrial-scale production. A series of control e

Pd Embedded in 1T-Rich MoS2 With Island-Sea Confinement for C2-Selective Ethanol Electrooxidation.

Direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs) are hampered by sluggish C─C bond cleavage and CO poisoning during ethanol electrooxidation on Pd catalysts. Selective oxidation to acetate through the C2 pathway circumvents CO formation, yet achieving near-exclusive C2 selectivity remains challenging. Herein, we report a nitrogen-doping-induced expansion strategy that converts bulk 2H-MoS2 into a metastable 1T-rich MoS2-x support (NTMSx) with enlarged interlayer spacing and abundant sulfur vacancies. Conductive 1T domains preferentially anchor Pd nanoparticles, creating an "island-sea" architecture that fost

Ectoine enhances the catalytic performance of lipase in the solvent-free synthesis of feruloylated acylglycerols.

In a solvent-free system, Candida rugosa lipase (CRL) catalyzes the transesterification reaction between ethyl ferulate and triolein to yield feruloyl oleoyl glycerol, a lipophilic food antioxidant. However, this reaction is limited by temperature, time, and water activity, posing significant challenges to improving enzymatic efficiency and reaction yield. Inspired by this, this study added the enzyme protector ectoine to the reaction system. The results showed that low concentrations (2.0 mmol/L) of ectoine can significantly enhance the catalytic performance of CRL, achieving a maximum conver

Ni-Ga/ZrO2 catalysts redirect CO2 hydrogenation toward oxygenates at industrially relevant pressures.

An intermetallic Ni-Ga/ZrO2 catalyst enables CO2 hydrogenation toward oxygenates under pressures up to 100 bar. Combined catalytic, in situ DRIFTS, and 100 h stability studies show that the Ni-Ga-GaOx-ZrO2 interface suppresses methanation, enhances methanol productivity, and enables ethanol and C2-C3 formation through a formate-mediated pathway.

Lysozyme solvation in monohydric alcohols with low water content: a calorimetric and preferential solvation study.

The main focus of this work is to clarify how protein macromolecules become solvated in monohydric alcohols with low water content. Alcohols with varying hydrophobicity (1-propanol, ethanol, and methanol) were used as model organic liquids. Two independent experimental techniques (isothermal immersion calorimetry and water/alcohol adsorption) were employed to provide complementary thermodynamic functions of the preferential solvation of hen egg-white lysozyme in alcohols with low and high water contents at 298.15 K. The advantage of this approach is that the enthalpies and Gibbs energies of wa

Identifying ideal solvents through evaluating mass transport channels at local three-phase interfaces of Pt/C catalysts: MD simulations.

The performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is defined by the three-phase interface within their core membrane electrode assembly. However, the solvent-dependent distribution of Nafion ionomers and its impact on oxygen transport and Pt utilization at the Pt/Nafion interface remain insufficiently understood. In this work, classical molecular dynamics simulations were employed to systematically investigate how eight commonly used solvents (water, acetone, butanol, ethanol, ether, isopropanol, methanol, and propanol) regulate the local three-phase interface structure within th

Concentration-Dependent Membrane Perturbation in DPPC Bilayers: Distinct Insertion Pathways, Stress Redistribution, and Mechanical Softening Induced by Chloroform and Alkanols.

How do solute concentration and molecular chemistry govern the structural and mechanical response of lipid membranes? We address this using microsecond-scale molecular dynamics simulations of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) bilayers with chloroform (CHCl3) and a homologous series of alkanols (methanol, ethanol, octanol) over 0-50% concentrations. Increasing solute concentration enhances membrane occupancy (fmem) and membrane partitioning, with the relative membrane affinity following the order OcOH > CHCl3 > EtOH > MeOH. The structural response depends strongly on solute chemistry. Chlor

Unveiling the Mechanistic Shift in Singlet Oxygen Generation by Re(I) Complexes: A Conceptual DFT and Kinetic Decomposition Approach.

Predicting and rationalizing the singlet oxygen (1O2) photosensitization efficiency of Re(I) tricarbonyl complexes remains challenging due to the complex interplay of electronic and environmental factors. In this work, we employ Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Conceptual DFT (C-DFT) analysis to systematically rationalize the substituent- and solvent-dependent sensitization trends of a family of pyrazolyl-pyridazine fac-Re(I)(CO)3Br complexes.
