Influence of Combined Pretreatments on Drying Time and Quality of Melon Chips Produced by Vacuum-Assisted Two-Way Infrared Drying.

RESEARCH BACKGROUND: Infrared technology, which has become widespread in recent years due to its rapid drying effect, also causes some negative changes in products. To eliminate the adverse effects that occur during the drying of products, different pretreatments such as dipping, blanching, freezing and ultrasonic treatment are applied. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: This study aims to determine the effect of different pretreatments (citric acid, ethanol, ultrasound, blanching and freezing) and their combinations on drying time and quality characteristics of melon chips produced by a novel vacuum-ass

Untargeted lipidomics-guided characterization of neuroprotective and neurotrophic activities of ethanol-modified supercritical carbon dioxide coffee pulp extracts.

Coffee pulp, an abundant by-product of coffee processing, was evaluated as a source of neuroactive lipids using ethanol-modified supercritical CO2 (sc-CO2); the resulting extract was compared with extracts obtained using ethanol and water. Untargeted lipidomics identified a total of 295 lipid species across all three extracts, spanning 22 classes, with glycerolipids predominating in all extracts (63.7-88.0%). The sc-CO2 and ethanol extractions yielded more diverse lipid profiles enriched in long-chain polyunsaturated triglycerides, whereas the water extract showed lower lipid coverage and high

Valorization of Araucaria angustifolia pinhão coat as a source of phenolics characterized by HRMS and application in chicken mortadella.

The Brazilian pinhão nut, the seed of Araucaria angustifolia, generates a largely discarded outer coat that remains underexplored despite its potential as a source of bioactive compounds. This study investigated the pinhão coat by evaluating extraction strategies to obtain phenolic-rich extracts and assessing functionality in chicken mortadella. Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) was investigated as a green extraction strategy using a 32 full factorial design whose responses were analyzed by polynomial regression to construct response surfaces, varying ethanol concentration and extraction ti

Chronic Minocycline Treatment during Early Adolescence Ameliorates the Prenatal Ethanol Exposure-Induced Increase in Addiction Risk and Microglial Morphological Activation.

Prenatal ethanol exposure (PE) causes fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), which have a high prevalence in the United States. There are various cognitive and behavioral deficits in FASD, including increased addiction risk. The diagnosis of FASD is often delayed, and there are no effective pharmacological treatments available for FASD. Persistent neuroinflammation, driven by microglial activation, may underlie cognitive and behavioral deficits in FASD. In the present study, we investigated whether suppressing microglial activation by chronic minocycline treatment during preadolescence and e

Gastroprotective effects of chlorella derived lutein via anti-inflammatory antioxidant and acid enzyme modulation.

Induction of gastric ulcer by ethanol is associated with inflammation, oxidative stress, and impaired gastric mucosal defense. The current work was performed to determine the effect of lutein from Chlorella on ethanol-induced gastric ulcers in rats. Lutein caused significant decrease in gastric ulcer index and ulcer area (by 80.8%) and had beneficial effects on hematological and inflammatory status as seen from the 38% reduction in neutrophil, 57% reduction in myeloperoxidase activity, and 83% reduction in neutrophilic infiltration. At a dose of 200 mg/kg, lutein significantly lowered cyclooxy

c-Jun N-Terminal Kinase-2 Mediates Alcohol and Corticosterone-Induced Tissue Injury at the Gut-Liver Axis.

Chronic stress and the stress hormone corticosterone are exacerbating factors in alcohol-induced gut and liver injury; however, the underlying mechanisms are poorly defined. This study investigates the potential role of c-Jun N-terminal kinase 2 (JNK2) in alcohol- and corticosterone-mediated gut and liver injury. The effects of chronic ethanol feeding and corticosterone administration on gut and liver injury were evaluated in JNK2 knockout (JNK2-KO) and wild-type mice. We measured gut permeability to FITC-inulin in vivo; epithelial tight junction (TJ) integrity by immunofluorescence confocal m

Yeast Protein-Derived Peptides Protect against Ethanol-Induced Acute Gastric Mucosal Injury: Isolation, Identification, and Potential Mechanisms.

Ethanol-induced gastric mucosal injury (AGMI) is intrinsically linked to oxidative stress, inflammatory responses, and compromised mucosal defense. This study aimed to isolate bioactive peptides from yeast protein (YP) and elucidate these in vitro protective mechanisms against AGMI. Activity-guided multi-technique separation, nanoLC-MS/MS, and bioinformatic screening were used to identify two novel peptides, ISPALLDKL and TAADLRYF. In ethanol-injured GES-1 cells, these peptides (240 and 320 μg/mL) exhibited potent cytoprotective activity comparable to omeprazole. Peptide pre-treatment attenuat

Gut Microbiota Remodeling Drives Cognitive Improvement: A Microbiota-Dependent Study of Malvidin-3-O-glucoside against Alcohol-Related Cognitive Impairment.

Gut microbiota dysbiosis triggers alcohol-related cognitive impairment (ARCI). Malvidin-3-O-glucoside (Mv3G), a highly bioactive monomeric anthocyanin abundant in pigmented fruits and cereals, can relieve neurodegenerative diseases by regulating gut microbiota (GM). Nevertheless, the gut microbiota-mediated protective effect of Mv3G against ARCI remains unknown. In this study, an alcohol-induced ARCI mouse model combined with fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) was built to explore Mv3G's protective effects. Results show that Mv3G acts in an intact gut flora-dependent manner. It repairs int

Rosemary Ethanolic Extract-Loaded Electrospun Nanofibers as a Bioactive Dressing for Diabetic Wound Healing.

Diabetic wounds are characterized by dysregulated reactive oxygen species (ROS), bacterial colonization, and excessive wound exudate. Current chronic wound management follows the TIME framework, in which infection-inflammation control and moisture balance can be addressed through wound dressings. Electrospun nanofibers incorporating plant-derived bioactives, such as rosemary ethanolic extract, offer antioxidant, antibacterial, and pro-healing properties relevant to diabetic wound therapy. In this study, rosemary ethanolic extract-loaded nanofibers were fabricated via electrospinning at 14 kV a

The evolution of image-guided ablations for thyroid disorders: a historical review.

Over the past four decades, the management of thyroid nodules and selected thyroid malignancies has progressively shifted from surgery-centered approaches toward image-guided minimally invasive treatments (MITT). What began in 1985 with ultrasound-guided percutaneous ethanol injection evolved into a range of energy-based techniques, including laser ablation (LA), radiofrequency ablation (RFA), microwave ablation (MWA), and high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU).This historical review aimed to reconstruct the major milestones in the development of image-guided thyroid ablation. A systematic P

Design of Highly Efficient CO2-Switchable Solvents Based on Extraction and Recovery Performance.

CO2-switchable solvents (CSSs) show promise for oil-based drilling cuttings treatment and green extraction, yet their structure-efficiency relationships remain unclear. Here, 15 amine-based reference compounds were used to design 163 candidates through C8-equivalent hydrophobic tail standardization and functionalization at the 2C, 3C, and 4C positions of the hydrophobic linker. Density functional theory calculations identified 23 CSSs with improved extraction efficiency, including 14 highly efficient and nine effective candidates. Linear mixed-effects analysis revealed that extraction efficien

AI-Enabled Mixed Potential Sensor Array for Complex VOC Mixture Decoding and Real-Time Methanol-Risk Assessment in Baijiu.

Accurate identification of complex gas mixtures in dynamic real-world environments is essential for environmental monitoring, food safety, and public health. However, these challenges arise mainly from overlapping response fingerprints of chemically similar hazardous analytes and the limited capability of conventional sensors to decouple multicomponent, concentration-coupled signals. Here, we report a ZnFe2O4/MoO3 mixed potential sensor array enabled by a material-device-algorithm co-design strategy. Through compositional engineering of the sensing electrodes, the array generates orthogonal cr

Alcohol-positive polytrauma patients: injury patterns, ICU resource use and mortality at a German Level I trauma center.

BACKGROUND: In most countries, alcohol consumption is so culturally ingrained that even small amounts are permitted while driving. Even at a blood alcohol concentration of 0.5 g/L, ethanol impairs mental and cognitive performance. Studies from the US and Europe estimate that elevated blood alcohol levels may be detected in 10%-40% of all emergency department patients. Against this background, we investigated the impact of alcohol consumption on injury severity, injury patterns, as well as primary and secondary outcomes in polytrauma patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective, single-
