Development of intraparotid lymph nodes with special reference to entrapment of the parotid acini in human fetuses.

OBJECTIVE: Lymph nodes within the parotid gland (PG) are known as 1) an origin of Warthin's tumors and 2) a metastatic focus of nearby cancers. This study aimed to investigate factors that provide the specific features. METHODS: Using histological sections from 28 human fetuses at approximately 15-31 weeks, we examined developing acini, ducts and lymph vessels (LVs) in the PG and compared the results with the other exocrine glands. RESULTS: In the PG at 15-16 weeks, developing acini were embedded in a meshwork of LVs that corresponds to a major lymphatic route from the posterolateral head to

FNA of Striated Duct Adenoma: Cytologic, Histologic, and Molecular Features of a Rare Salivary Gland Neoplasm.

Striated duct adenoma (SDA) is a rare benign salivary gland neoplasm with limited cytologic characterization. We report a case of SDA with cytologic, histologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular correlation to further define its morphologic spectrum and diagnostic considerations. The patient was a 62-year-old male with a submandibular gland mass. Cytologically, the specimen demonstrated loose clusters of monomorphic epithelial cells ranging from cuboidal to rare elongated or slightly spindled morphology, with moderate amounts of variable oncocytic cytoplasm. Nuclei were ovoid and normochroma

Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Soft Palate With Indeterminate Imaging and Nondiagnostic Fine-Needle Aspiration Cytology: A Case Report.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign salivary gland neoplasm and may arise from the minor salivary glands of the palate. Palatal masses can resemble inflammatory, infectious, or other neoplastic lesions, and fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) may be nondiagnostic. A 35-year-old woman presented with a painless, gradually enlarging swelling of the left soft palate of three months' duration. Examination revealed a smooth, firm, non-tender, non-ulcerated submucosal mass measuring approximately 3 × 2 cm and extending toward the left tonsillar fossa. Contrast-enhanced computed tomograph

Morphometric Analysis of the Mandibular Canal in Van Cats: A Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) Study.

This study aimed to determine the morphometric characteristics and sex-dependent variations in the mandibular canal (MC) in Van cats using Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), thereby establishing breed-specific baseline values. CBCT scans of 14 healthy adult Van cats (7 males, 7 females; all aged 4 years old; mean body mass 3.3 ± 0.49 kg) were analyzed. DICOM files were oriented into a standardized head position by aligning the hard palate parallel to the horizontal plane and ensuring the sagittal plane was perpendicular to the reference line, and internal canal dimensions, cortical distance

Severe necrotizing sialometaplasia progressing to palatonasal fistula in a patient characterized by habitual self-induced vomiting: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Self-induced vomiting (SIV) in patients with eating disorders exposes the oral cavity to repeated chemical and mechanical insults, leading to various oral complications. Necrotizing sialometaplasia (NS) is one such complication; however, most cases resolve spontaneously and follow a benign course without requiring surgical intervention. CASE PRESENTATION: A woman in her twenties with a long history of an eating disorder characterized by habitual SIV developed NS of the hard palate. Unlike the usual benign course, the lesion failed to heal spontaneously and progressed to a palatona

Development-inspired approach for the derivation of functional and transplantable salivary gland organoids from human pluripotent stem cells.

Salivary gland (SG) hypofunction significantly affects the life quality of patients with hyposalivation. Current treatment options for these conditions are limited and often result in undesirable side effects. To address this issue, we've developed a developmentally inspired strategy to derive salivary gland epithelial progenitor (SGEP) cells from human pluripotent stem cells (PSC). Then we employ SGEP cells derived from human PSC with a SOX10::GFP reporter to engineer three-dimensional lumenized SG organoids, with well-defined lumens and secretory function, reminiscent of human salivary gland

Isotype-specific autoantibody profiles associated with clinical immunological signatures in IgG4-RD.

OBJECTIVES: IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) involves elevated serum IgG4 and several autoantigens, but the role of different antibody isotypes in pathogenesis remains unclear. This study systematically characterized isotype‑specific autoantibody responses against representative autoantigens and evaluated their clinical and immunological correlations. METHODS: We enrolled 61 patients with IgG4‑RD, 31 with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), 11 with Sjögren's syndrome (SS), and 30 healthy controls (HC). Serum levels of isotype‑specific autoantibodies were measured using in‑house ELISA. Correlati

Palatal Island Flap With Adjuvant Radiotherapy for Hard Palate Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma: 2-year Outcomes.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the minor salivary glands most commonly arises in the hard palate and exhibits perineural invasion, indolent growth, and late recurrence, often requiring multimodal therapy. Reconstruction must restore oronasal separation, speech, and deglutition; data regarding the tolerance of palatal island flaps to postoperative radiotherapy and long-term functional outcomes remain limited. A 35-year-old woman with T1N0M0 ACC of the right hard palate (American Joint Committee on Cancer, 8th edition) underwent wide local excision with partial palatal ostectomy followed by r

Robot-Assisted Gasless Trans-Hairline Excision of Submandibular Gland Tumors.

Benign submandibular gland tumors are usually resected through a transcervical incision, which provides direct exposure but leaves visible cervical scarring. Remote-access endoscopic techniques improve scar concealment but can be limited by two-dimensional visualization, assistant-dependent camera control, and rigid instrument collision in the narrow submandibular gland space. This article presents a standardized video protocol for robot-assisted submandibular gland excision via a gasless trans-hairline approach for benign tumors. The procedure begins with postauricular trans-hairline incision

A Rare Case of Benign-Appearing Myoepithelial Carcinoma of the Hard Palate in an Adolescent.

Myoepithelial carcinoma is a rare malignant salivary gland tumor that is particularly uncommon in pediatric patients. A 14-year-old girl presented with a painless, slowly enlarging hard palate mass that had been present for 2 years. Clinically, the lesion closely resembled a benign tumor due to its young presentation age, well-encapsulated state, absence of mucosal ulceration, and lack of lymphadenopathy, leading to an initial diagnosis of pleomorphic adenoma. Complete surgical excision with superficial mucosa preservation was initially performed. However, histopathological examination reveale

Effect of high-sucrose intake on the salivary glands of growing rats: histological analysis and assessment of gene and protein expression.

Excessive sugar intake contributes to noncommunicable diseases, including dental caries. According to the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) theory, early-life nutrition influences organ development and future disease susceptibility. This study examined the impact of high-sucrose intake during the growth period on salivary gland development in rats and its potential influence on dental caries after growth. Male Wistar rats were divided into two groups: a high-sucrose group (HS), receiving a 15% sucrose solution, and a control group (C), receiving distilled water. Measurements

Salivary gland dynamic imaging combined with tomosynthesis fusion imaging for evaluating postoperative salivary gland function changes in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer undergoing initial 131I therapy.

BACKGROUND: 131I therapy is a targeted therapy for patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) after surgery, reducing the risk of tumor recurrence and metastasis. Radioactive iodine can accumulate in the salivary glands, causing radiation damage. Dynamic imaging of the salivary glands can objectively assess the morphology and function of the salivary glands, making it a simple and non-invasive diagnostic method. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively analyze salivary gland function changes in patients with DTC undergoing postoperative 131I therapy using salivary gland dynamic i
