Residential radon in Peru: challenges for health surveillance and lung cancer prevention.

The Journal of Genetics, started by William Bateson in 1910, played a distinguished role in the early years of genetics. However, it stopped publishing in 1978. The Indian Academy of Sciences revived it in 1985, and has published it regularly since then. To commemorate this landmark, I highlight one of the 17 articles published that year. 'The isolation and genetic analysis of a Caenorhabditis elegans… X-chromosome balancer' by András Fodor and Péter Deak, of the Institute of Genetics, Biological Research Centre, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Szeged, Hungary. More than the 43 citations garner

Large-scale multiethnic electronic health record resource for diabetes complications research: the North West London Diabetes Cohort (NWLDC) - cohort profile.

PURPOSE: The North West London Diabetes Cohort is established to provide systematic characterisation of a large diabetes population as a foundation for complications research and prognostic modelling. Many predictive modelling studies neglect the essential descriptive characterisation of underlying cohorts, focusing narrowly on model accuracy. This cohort profile addresses this gap by comprehensively describing the demographic composition, clinical characteristics and complication incidence patterns. The notably diverse, multiethnic population enables examination of ethnic disparities and supp

Association between leukocyte telomere length and neurodegenerative diseases: a prospective cohort in the UK Biobank.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to investigate the association between leukocyte telomere length (LTL) and the risk of incident NDDs using a large-scale cohort from the UK Biobank. METHODS: Data from 459,902 subjects were analyzed using Cox proportional hazards models and machine learning (ML) algorithms to assess LTL's association with NDD risk. RESULTS: Shorter LTL was associated with an increased risk of NDDs, including Alzheimer's disease (HR: 0.52, 95% CI 0.40-0.67, P < 0.001), dementia in AD (HR: 0.53, 95% CI 0.39-0.73, P < 0.001), unspecified dementia (HR: 0.74, 95% CI 0.58-0.95, P < 0.05

Prioritising people who use drugs in health policy: An Australian Capital Territory case study.

INTRODUCTION: Governments are increasingly identifying priority populations on which to focus health policy and to measure health and wellbeing outcomes. Prioritising populations that are considered to be higher risk or to have particular needs that may not be captured within the parameters of health policy developed for the general population, is essential to health equity and efficient resource allocation. However, the criteria that governments use for prioritising populations is often vague or unspecified. To date, people who use drugs are almost never identified as a priority population in

Police-Reported Impaired Driving After Recreational Cannabis Legalization in Canada.

INTRODUCTION: When Canada legalized recreational cannabis in 2018, it also enhanced enforcement against impaired driving. This observational study analyzed how police-reported impaired driving rates evolved after those 2 policy changes. METHODS: The study analyzed province-level annual counts of driving impaired by alcohol, drugs (including but not limited to cannabis), or both during 2009-2023. The data were published in 2024 and analyzed in 2025. Interrupted time-series regressions tested for changes in annual impairment rates per million population aged ≥16 years after 2018. "PrEP is always on the table": mixed methods study of provider willingness to refer/link clients to PrEP in community sexual health and drug use-related programs.

Southern U.S. communities experience high HIV incidence and substance use prevalence, yet low PrEP uptake. Providers (N = 191) completed a survey about willingness to refer/link clients with HIV risk to PrEP. Through in-depth interviews, 12 directors (5 sexually transmitted infection [STI] clinics; 5 syringe services programs [SSPs]; 2 substance use treatment programs [SUTPs]) described multi-level factors that contextualized provider willingness. Providers were more willing to refer/link clients with unspecified HIV risk and men who have sex with men to PrEP vs. other populations. SUTP (vs. S

Nomograms applicability in clinical toxicology - enhancing precision in clinical decision-making: a systematic review.

Nomograms represent powerful predictive tools that could be easily applied to guide managing acutely intoxicated patients. Thus, several nomograms were developed and validated in the last few decades to predict various outcomes following acute poisoning. However, the adopted nomograms remain sporadic efforts of researchers that limited their usefulness in clinical settings. We aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical formulation and hands-on application of the developed nomograms to benefit acutely poisoned patients. In this context, this systematic review was conducted to be a reference gu

Assessing an ICD-10 code approach for estimating xylazine-involved overdose deaths in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of the veterinary sedative xylazine in US overdose deaths rose between 2018 and 2021. More updated estimates are limited, partially due to the lack of a dedicated ICD-10 code-a primary mechanism used to specify drugs implicated in overdose deaths in the US, including in the CDC WONDER system, which provides public data for download with a 6-month lag. For other emerging substances lacking dedicated codes, over time umbrella codes have come to de facto represent them, yet it has not been demonstrated if this has occurred for xylazine. METHODS: Overdose deaths in CD

Biological signatures in the Alzheimer's continuum discriminate between diagnosis-related and -unrelated associations to ATN categories.

Alzheimer's disease and related dementias have a multifactorial aetiology and heterogeneous biology. The current study aims to identify different biological signatures in a deeply phenotyped memory clinic patient population. In this cross-sectional study, we analysed 49 pre-specified proteins using a multiplex antibody-based suspension bead array in 278 CSF samples from the real-world research database and biobank at the Karolinska University Hospital Memory Clinic, Solna, Sweden. Patients with a clinical diagnosis of subjective cognitive decline (N = 151), mild cognitive impairment (N = 61),

Analysis of Factors Affecting Quality in Structural Magnetic Resonance Images.

Combining Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI) from different sources is an increasingly common practice that holds high scientific value. Differences in acquisition parameters and participant characteristics can lead to variations in image quality, highlighting the importance of ensuring these variations do not result in biased statistical outcomes. Here, we investigated contributions of both technical and participant-related factors to MRI quality. We examined how technical factors (scanner hardware, software, and acquisition protocols) affect the Image Quality Rating (IQR) of anatomical MRI. We

Insights into effortful adaptation during speech perception: The role of dopamine, norepinephrine, and prediction error.

In a highly variable world, listeners must be able to rapidly adjust to changing circumstances to prioritize comprehension. The neurobiological underpinnings of this ability are largely unspecified. This review combines insights from reinforcement learning, predictive coding, and the function of dopamine and norepinephrine to explore the viability of an effortful and error-driven system of adaptation during speech perception. Iteration, internal monitoring, error generation, and prediction are shared across multiple models of adaptation, leading to the possibility of a common mechanism. In sea

Assessing the importance of post-mortem interval and other variables on the analysis of ethanol in the vitreous humour with a focus on ethyl glucuronide and ethyl sulfate: A critical review.

Vitreous humour is used to assess intoxication at the time of death due to its anatomical isolation, which reduces contamination risk. Toxicological analysis typically includes drugs and alcohol. For interpreting post-mortem ethanol concentrations, distinguishing between ante-mortem ingestion and post-mortem production from putrefaction is essential. For this purpose, biomarkers like ethyl glucuronide (EtG) and ethyl sulfate (EtS) are crucial for confirming alcohol consumption. Factors such as post-mortem interval (PMI), the cause of death, individual characteristics like sex, age, body mass i

Characteristics of U.S. emergency department visits for altered mental status, 2016-2022.

BACKGROUND: Altered mental status (AMS) is a frequent reason to visit the emergency department (ED), and it carries a broad differential diagnosis. There is a lack of nationally representative data on the clinical characteristics and diagnostic patterns of ED visits for AMS. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of adult ED visits for AMS using data from the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS) from 2016 to 2022. Visits for AMS were identified using the primary reason for visit variable recorded in the survey instrument. We evaluated demographics, clinical feat

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on poisoning induced out of hospital cardiac arrest in South Korea retrospective observational study.

Poisoning-induced out-of-hospital cardiac arrest has characteristics distinct from cardiogenic out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, with external factors such as patient intent and environmental influences playing crucial roles. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has altered societal and healthcare dynamics, potentially influencing poisoning-induced out-of-hospital cardiac arrest outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of the pandemic on poisoning-induced out-of-hospital cardiac arrest characteristics and survival in South Korea. Participants: Adult patients (aged ≥ 19 years

Role of onset polarity in the risk of parental severe mental disorders among offspring with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the association between parental severe mental disorders (SMDs) and onset polarity of bipolar disorder (BD) among their offspring. We aimed to investigate the association between parental SMDs and onset polarity of BD among their offspring. METHODS: Offspring with BD were identified as the index group, and a demographic-matched group was selected as the controls. The primary outcome was the risk of parental SMDs, including schizophrenia, BD, depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), alcohol use disorder (AUD), and substance use disorder (S
