Indirect Associations Between Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms and Other Psychiatric Symptoms, Alcohol Use, and Well-being via Psychological Flexibility Among Police Officers.

Police officers experience a high number of potentially traumatic events (PTEs) often associated with elevated posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). In addition, PTSS are related to co-occurring psychiatric symptoms (e.g., anxiety, depression), alcohol misuse, and low perceived well-being. Yet, behavioral processes that may account for the associations between PTSS and unfavorable outcomes remain unspecified. Psychological flexibility, or one's response to private experiences (e.g., PTE-related memories) with an open, aware, and active approach, may be one such process. The present study aimed

Poisonings by substances of abuse at the Oslo Accident and Emergency Outpatient Clinic 2014-18.

BACKGROUND: Poisonings by substances of abuse are potentially dangerous and indicate risky substance use behaviour. To be prepared to handle patients with poisonings by substances of abuse, we need updated knowledge about the kinds of substances we can be expected to encounter. Most substance use-related poisonings in Oslo are treated at the OAEOC, and we describe the poisonings observed there in the period 2014-2018. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We included all patients treated for poisoning by substances of abuse at the OAEOC in the years 2014-18, with the exception of lone ethanol poisonings. For

A systematic review of addiction substitution in recovery: Clinical lore or empirically-based?

This systematic review synthesized the literature examining addiction substitution during recovery from substance use or behavioral addictions. A total of 96 studies were included with sample sizes ranging from 6 to 14,885. The most common recovery addictions were opioids (30.21%), followed by cannabis (20.83%), unspecified use (17.71%), nicotine (12.50%), alcohol (12.50%), cocaine (4.17%), and gambling (2.08%). Statistical results were provided by 70.83% of the studies. Of these, 17.65% found support for addiction substitution, whereas 52.94% found support for concurrent recovery. A total of

Drugs and Drug Classes Involved in Overdose Deaths Among Females, United States: 1999-2017.

Background: Drug overdose deaths among U.S. women have risen steadily from 1999 to 2017, especially among certain ages. Various studies report involvement of drugs and drug classes in overdose deaths. Less is known, however, regarding the combinations that are most often indicated on death certificates, particularly among females. Analyzing mutually, exclusive drug/drug class combinations listed on death certificates of females are the objective of this study. Materials and Methods: Mortality data for U.S. female residents were obtained from the 1999 to 2017 National Vital Statistics System (n

Prevalences of and characteristics associated with single- and polydrug-involved U.S. Emergency Department Visits in 2018.

INTRODUCTION: Nonfatal and fatal drug overdoses have recently increased. There are limited data describing the range of illicit, prescribed, and over-the-counter drugs involved in overdoses presenting to U.S. emergency departments (EDs). METHODS: Using 2018 Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) Nationwide ED Sample (NEDS) data, we calculated weighted counts and percentages by drug among overdose-related ED visits. Overdose-related ED visits were those having an International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) drug poisoning code falling under

Risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in breast cancer survivors: a nationwide cohort study.

Several studies have suggested that estrogens have a protective function against lymphomagenesis. The treatment of breast cancer is driven by subtype classification, and the assessment of hormone receptor status is important for treatment selection. Thus, we evaluated the association between breast cancer and the incidence of NHL. We conducted a retrospective cohort study using a population-based nationwide registry in South Korea. We selected all women with newly diagnosed breast cancer between January 1st, 2002 and December 31st, 2016 who received curative treatment (N = 84,969) and a 1:10 s

Memantine Usage for Management of Korsakoff Syndrome in the Setting of Chronic Alcohol Use and Unspecified Eating Disorder.

Korsakoff syndrome is a neuropsychiatric condition frequently seen as a progression of Wernicke's encephalopathy and is often associated with long-term alcohol abuse. It is characterized by further cognitive impairments, such as indiscriminate anterograde and retrograde amnesia, in addition to executive function deficits. As the syndrome is a result of severe thiamine deficiency, its management primarily focuses on nutritional replenishment and electrolyte maintenance. In recent years, a few published reports have detailed the off-label use of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved drugs

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder-Issues of Misdiagnosis and Missed Diagnosis in Black Youth: A Case Report.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is an umbrella term used to describe the set of conditions that result from prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) that lead to cognitive impairment, neurodevelopmental delays, socioemotional and behavioral problems, medical complications, and/or secondary disabilities. In addition, various internalizing and externalizing disorders share similar symptoms with FASD, resulting in misdiagnoses and/or missed diagnosis of FASD. This is amplified for Black youths due to the later onset of referral for assessment and lower frequency of referral to specialty clinics. Th

HPV DNA genotyping, HPV E6*I mRNA detection, and p16INK4a/Ki-67 staining in Belgian head and neck cancer patient specimens, collected within the HPV-AHEAD study.

BACKGROUND: The main risk factors for head and neck cancer (HNC) are tobacco and alcohol use. However, an important fraction of oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) is caused by human papillomaviruses (HPV), a subgroup with increasing incidence in several western countries. METHODS: As part of the HPV-AHEAD study, we assessed the role of HPV infection in 772 archived tissue specimens of Belgian HNC patients: 455 laryngeal (LC), 106 oral cavity (OCC), 99 OPC, 76 hypopharyngeal (HC), and 36 unspecified parts of the head and neck. All specimens were tested for HPV DNA (21 genotypes); whereof all HPV DNA-p
