Pre-Competition Oral Findings in Danish Sport Horses and Ponies Competing at High Level.

This study addresses the presence and location of oral lesions in 342 dressage, show jumping, and eventing horses examined at an obligatory veterinary inspection before competing in the Danish National Championship in 2020. Ulcers in the lip commissures were photographed for subsequent pathological analysis. If a lesion was found at the lip commissures on one side, there was an increased risk of finding a similar lesion on the other side (ulcer: p < 0.0001; scarring/depigmentation: p < 0.0001; fissure: p = 0.002; erosion/contusion: p < 0.0001). At the lip commissures, external (cutaneous) ulce

A non-cephalometric three-dimensional appraisal of soft tissue changes by functional appliances in orthodontics: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Patients with dental and skeletal Class II growth patterns present typical facial characteristics. Functional appliance (FA) therapy is one of the conventional orthodontic treatment modalities used to harmonize these facial imbalances. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this systematic review was to investigate and summarize the effects of FAs on the facial soft tissues captured in three dimensions. SEARCH METHODS: A systematic search was conducted up to December 2020. Databases Medline (via PubMed), Embase (via Ovid), Web of Science, and Cochrane Central were searched without language restr

Mandibular Distraction Osteogenesis First for Children With Severe Unilateral Hemifacial Microsomia: Treatment Strategy and Outcomes.

The treatment for severe hemifacial microsomia (HFM), especially type III case, is extremely difficult. Mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO) was rarely used as the primary choice in the treatment of severe type cases. The authors sought to observe the short-term therapeutic outcomes of patients with severe unilateral HFM who underwent MDO first.A retrospective study of children underwent MDO or later received costochondral graft (CCG) for severe unilateral HFM from 2009 to 2019 was conducted. Cephalometric measurements and clinical variables were analyzed to evaluate the effectiveness of

Functional Outcome Comparison of Free Gracilis Muscle Anchoring Methods in Patients with Facial Paralysis: Upper Lip Red Line Incision versus Facelift Incision Approach.

BACKGROUND: The greatest challenge of a free-muscle transfer in facial reanimation surgery is anchoring muscle to perioral soft tissue. An additional incision provides a better way to anchor the transferred muscle but leaves a visible scar. Herein, we compared the functional and aesthetic outcomes in a conventional facelift incision approach with and without the addition of a red line incision. METHODS: This study included patients experiencing unilateral facial paralysis who underwent free gracilis transfer between December 2016 and December 2018. Anchoring through facelift incision with ext

Functional and aesthetic outcome of different methods of reconstruction of full thickness lip defects.

Background: The lip has functional and aesthetic importance. Lip defects occur due to the variety of etiology and the choice of their reconstruction has profound effect on functions and cosmesis. There are multiple options available for reconstruction according to defect size, but superiority of one method over another is still debated and hence the methods and their outcome were analyzed prospectively. Material and method: Twenty-one patients with all sizes and locations of defects in upper and lower lip with acquired etiology were included in the evaluation. Reconstruction was performed acco

Early Cleft Lip Repair: Demonstrating Efficacy in the First 100 Patients.

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip and/or palate affects approximately one in 700 live births. Optimal timing for repair of cleft lip has yet to be objectively validated. Earlier repair takes advantage of a high degree of plasticity within the nasal cartilage and maxilla. The authors present patients enrolled in an early cleft lip repair protocol facilitating effective repair of the cleft lip and nostril. METHODS: American Society of Anesthesiologists class I to II patients with unilateral cleft lip and/or palate undergoing repair before 3 months of age were enrolled over 5 years. Perioperative data, surg

The Surgical Anatomy of the Jowl and the Mandibular Ligament Reassessed.

INTRODUCTION: A visible jowl is a reason patients consider lower facial rejuvenation surgery. The anatomical changes that lead to formation of the jowl remain unclear. The aim of this study was to elucidate the anatomy of the jowl, the mandibular ligament and the labiomandibular crease, and their relationship with the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-nine cadaver heads were studied (16 embalmed, 33 fresh, mean age 75 years). Following preliminary dissections and macro-sectioning, a series of standardized layered dissections were performed, complemen

A retrospective clinical, multi-center cross-sectional study to assess the severity and sequela of Noma/Cancrum oris in Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: Noma is a disfiguring gangrenous disease of the orofacial tissue and predominantly affects malnourished children. The tissue gangrene or necrosis starts in the mouth and eventually spreads intra-orally with the destruction of soft and hard tissues. If not controlled, the natural course of the condition leads to a perforation through the skin of the face, creating a severe cosmetic and functional defect, which often affects the mid-facial structures. Furthermore, the course of the disease is fulminating, and without timely intervention, it is fatal. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retro

Gracilis free flap in head and neck reconstruction beyond facial palsy reanimation.

INTRODUCTION: The gracilis muscle free flap has gained popularity in head and neck reconstruction due to minimal donor-site morbidity, reliable vascular pedicle, strong muscular component, and possibility to perform nerve coaptation. However, almost all the existing evidence in the literature is related to its use for facial palsy reanimation. The aim of this study was therefore to review and provide a comprehensive summary of all the possible indications and outcomes of this versatile free flap in head neck reconstructive surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review of the literature

Measuring 3D facial displacement of increasing smile expressions.

BACKGROUND: Following paralysis, facial reanimation surgery can restore movement by nerve and/or muscle transfer within the face. The subtleties of lip and cheek movements during smiling are important aspects in assessing reanimation. This study quantifies average 3D movement vectors of the face during smiling based on the diverse Binghamton University 3D facial expression database to yield normative measures of lip and cheek movement. METHODS: The analysis was conducted on 100 subjects with 3D facial scans in a neutral and 4 increasing smile intensities, as well as associated labeled 3D land

Combined ALT, Estlander, and Upper Lip Flap for Defects Involving the Oral Commissure.

Lip defects (including the corners of the mouth) are a reconstructive challenge in terms of both aesthetic and functional outcomes. When oral cancer resection results in defects that extend beyond the corners of the mouth to the buccal mucosa and buccal skin, it is difficult to perform reconstructive surgery using only a local flap, and a free flap must be used in combination. In this report, we present a case of reconstructive surgery of the corners of the mouth, buccal mucosa, and buccal skin after tumor resection for buccal mucosal squamous cell carcinoma in a 70-year-old man. The patient p

Characteristics and Dynamics of Smile in Patients With Skeletal Class II Malocclusion Versus Class I Malocclusion Using Still Digital Video Captures: A Three-Group, Cross-Sectional, Comparative Study.

Background Smiling is one of the effective ways for people to express their feelings. It is an integral part of the diagnosis and planning and a key point of the treatment objectives in orthodontic care. Many factors are associated with a pleasant smile, such as correct anatomy, gingival health, and teeth proportion. Therefore, different malocclusion classes can affect the characteristics of smile esthetics. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of skeletal class II malocclusion on the characteristics and dynamics of the smile in the sagittal and frontal planes. Methodology The study sample

The Yin and Yang of Primary Unilateral Cleft Lip and Nose Repair: Balance through Opposing Cleft and Noncleft Side Changes.

BACKGROUND: Balance is achieved through opposing interactions. Objective three-dimensional assessment of changes during surgical treatment of the unilateral cleft lip and nasal deformity are limited, and false assumptions may prevent optimal management. METHODS: The authors performed anthropometric analysis on the immediate preoperative and postoperative images (captured under anesthetic) of patients undergoing primary repair ( n = 36). Changes in dimensions and measures of balance were assessed ( P < 0.05). RESULTS: Angles and ratios that reflect cleft to noncleft side balance normalized, a

Trialling Locally Made, Low-Cost Bits to Improve Bit-Related Welfare Problems in Cart Horses: Findings from a Study in Senegal.

Bits used for cart horses in Senegal are typically made of recovered construction iron and often have defects related to design, shape, fit and metal quality. Consequently, there is widespread presence of bit-related oral injury amongst these equids. It was hypothesised that improving bit design would ameliorate bit-related welfare issues for working cart horses. This study aimed to develop locally made alternative bit prototypes and test their efficacy as less harmful to working horses, and their acceptability to their drivers. Eight animal-based welfare indicators (four physical and four beh

Description of Rotylenchus zhongshanensis sp. nov. (Tylenchomorpha: Hoplolaimidae) and discovery of its endosymbiont Cardinium.

A new bisexual species of Rotylenchus is described and illustrated based on morphological, morphometric and molecular characterizations. Rotylenchus zhongshanensis sp. nov. is characterized by having a conoid lip region complying with the basic pattern for Hoplolaimidae, but with pharyngeal glands slightly overlapping intestine dorsally and cuticle thickened abnormally in female tail terminus. Females have robust stylet (30.1-33.8 μm). The pharyngeal gland has short dorsal (11.2-16.8 μm) overlap on the intestine. The vulva is located at 48.0-56.5% of body length, and phasmids are pore-like, 4-

Oral Cancer Risk Assessment for Different Types of Smokeless Tobacco Products Sold Worldwide: A Review of Reviews and Meta-analyses.

UNLABELLED: Smokeless tobacco (SLT) use is a significant cause of lip and oral cavity cancers. Globally, oral cancer prevalence is strongly linked to the types of tobacco products used, their chemical composition, and their pattern of use. Except snus, all SLT products sold in different World Health Organization regions are strongly associated with oral cancer incidence. Shammah showed the highest association OR with 95% confidence intervals (CI; OR, 38.74; 95% CI, 19.50-76.96), followed by oral snuff (OR, 11.80; 95% CI, 8.45-16.49), gutkha (OR, 8.67; 95% CI, 3.59-20.93), tobacco with betel qu

Mucocutaneous Melanoma - A Diagnostic and Therapeutic Problem.

Mucosal melanoma, or so-called mucosal-oral melanoma is a rare but serious diagnostic and therapeutic problem. The "primary mixed" mucocutaneous forms of melanoma, which affect both the mucosa and the adjacent skin, are also particularly problematic and rare. Given that the staging, diagnosis, and treatment of mucosal (oral) melanoma differs from that of cutaneous melanoma, staging in mixed melanoma (primary mucocutaneous melanoma) as well as decisions for each subsequent diagnostic and therapeutic step should be individualized and modified according to the recommendations of the respective tw
