A study was conducted in a screen printing plant to determine the exposure of workers to isophorone and other organic solvents. One hundred twenty-four charcoal tube samples were collected from both workers breathing zones and various workplace areas. Sampling times were 50-90 minutes. Maximum mean TWACs of isophorone and cyclohexanone were 23 +/- 5.4 ppm and 28 +/- 5 ppm, respectively, at the breathing zones of printing press workers. Restrictional endonuclease Bam HI, practically free of unspecific nucleases, was isolated after ultrasonic destruction of cells, precipitation of the restrictases with isopropanol and chromatography on DEAE cellulose. Aculeacin A, a new antifungal antibiotic was isolated from the mycelial cake of Aspergillus aculeatus M-4214. The antibiotic is a white amorphous powder soluble in lower alcohols and hardly soluble in other organic solvents or water. Aculeacin A gave palmitic acid and five ninhydrin-positive products including theonine, hydroxyproline upon acid hydrolysis. The antibiotic showed a potent activity against molds and yeasts, but exhibited no antibacterial activity. Aculeacin A has relatively low toxicity in mice.

1-(2-Quinolylazo)-2-acenaphthylenol (QAAc) combines with Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II), giving deep red 1:2 complexes which are extractable in CCl(4)and other organic solvents. Spectrophotometric methods based on the reactions are sensitive and fairly selective, the Sandell's sensitivities being 8.8 x 10(-4), 2.4 x 10(-3) and 3.3 x 10(-3) microg/cm(2) for Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) respectively.

Hafnium and zirconium are not retained on the strongly acidic cation-exchange resin Dowex 50 from a mixture consisting of methanol and 12M nitric acid (19:1) which is 0.1M in trioctylphosphine oxide.
