For the first time a secondary ion mass spectrum of diethyl ether was obtained at low temperature. The spectrum recording became possible by carefully selecting the range of experimental conditions for the production of a cluster-type spectrum. This range is specified by the threshold for spectrum appearance above the melting temperature of the frozen sample and a fairly short time span of existence of the liquid estimated as only a few minutes. Neuropsychiatric, gastrointestinal and muscular disorders associated with glue sniffing have been widely reported, but endocrinologic abnormalities of glue exposure are rarely mentioned in the literature. The suitability of the half-cell Pt/I2, KI in glacial acetic acid as reference electrode for potentiometric titrations of weak bases in the same medium was investigated. This electrode is easily prepared. It has been found very convenient in use and performing at least as well as the best electrodes used for the same purpose. Some phenomenological aspects of the behaviour of the above half-cell, of interest for the use as the reference electrode in the laboratory practice have been observed, that show important differences respect aqueous medium and other organic solvents.

Phenol, like many other organic solvents, is toxic to micro-organisms even at low concentrations. However, some micro-organisms can withstand this toxicity to a certain concentration. To observe the uptake mechanism of phenol, bacteria were isolated from a petroleum refinery effluent and identified. We have studied systematically the effect of the non-ionic surfactants Thesit and Triton X-100, and of propan-2-ol (used as a substrate solubilizer) on the activity of the cholesterol oxidases from Streptomyces hygroscopicus (SCO) and Brevibacterium sterolicum (BCO). Low concentrations of Thesit lead to an activity increase with both enzymes; at higher surfactant concentrations the opposite effect occurs. Triton X-100 inactivates both enzymes at all concentrations. It is deduced that these surfactants exert their effects by interaction with the enzymes and not by affecting micellar phenomena.

OBJECTIVES: To extend the follow up of a cohort of 14,457 aircraft maintenance workers to the end of 1990 to evaluate cancer risks from potential exposure to trichloroethylene and other chemicals.
METHODS: The cohort comprised civilians employed for at least one year between 1952 and 1956, of whom 5727 had died by 31 December 1990. Analyses compared the mortality of the cohort with the general population of Utah and the mortality and cancer incidence of exposed workers with those unexposed to chemicals, while adjusting for age, sex and calendar time.

The solutions of nine alpha, omega-bis(3-alkyl(aryl)-4,5-dihydro-1H-1,2,4-triazol-5-on-4-yl) alkanes were titrated with tetrabutylammoniumhydroxide (TBAH) in methanol, using potentiometric methods. The half neutralization potentials values were found for all cases.
