Cellulose-based ultralight foam with dual-scale porosity from hybrid fibers for sustainable oil-water separation.

Industrial wastewater and oil spills are increasingly deteriorating the natural environment, driving demands for superhydrophobic oil-water separation materials. However, developing sustainable absorbents for oil spill remediation is challenging due to the typical trade-off between high absorption capacity and low mechanical robustness. Here, we present a biomass-derived ultralight foam using cellulose for environmental remediation, fabricated through integration of vinyltrimethoxysilane-modified Calotropis gigantea fiber (CGF) and microfibrillated cellulose (MFC). The hollow structure of CGF

Dynamic Mapping of RNA-Binding Proteins During Bacillus subtilis Sporulation Using Orthogonal Organic Phase Separation.

RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) have pleiotropic roles in modulating the physiology of both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells, enabling them to adapt to environmental variations. The importance of RBPs has led to the development of a variety of methods aiming to identify them. However, most of these approaches have primarily been implemented and optimized in eukaryotic systems. To both uncover novel RBPs involved in Bacillus subtilis sporulation and capture their RNA-binding ability dynamically, we adapted the orthogonal organic phase separation technique (OOPS), which had previously been used in E

Palladium-Catalyzed Multicomponent Carbonylative Cyclization toward Ynone-Functionalized Isoquinolinones.

We report a palladium-catalyzed carbonylative synthesis of alkynone-substituted isoquinolinones utilizing chloroform as a safe CO surrogate. The base-mediated hydrolysis of CHCl3 generates CO in situ, facilitating the efficient coupling of 2-iodobenzamides with alkynes. Furthermore, this external CO-free protocol demonstrates a broad substrate scope, excellent functional group tolerance, and scalability, thereby providing direct access to bioactive isoquinoline scaffolds.

Enhancing DNA recovery in low-biomass snow algae samples: a comparative study of extraction methods and their effect on community composition.

High-throughput sequencing is a powerful tool for environmental microbiology and can be particularly important for examining community structure and function for organisms that are difficult to culture or environments that are difficult to mimic, like snow. Nucleic acid extraction significantly impacts these analyses, often introducing more variation between samples than PCR or sequencing. Snow algae are widespread on mountain and polar snowfields, where they contribute to biogeochemical cycling and accelerate melt. Despite increasing research on snow algae, DNA extraction remains challenging,

Tuning Molar Mass of the D18 Polymer via Stille Polymerization: Impact on Morphology and Large-Area Blade-Coated Organic Solar Cells.

Achieving reproducible, high-performance organic solar cells (OSCs) requires precise control over the molar mass of donor polymers, as it governs film formation, morphology, and charge transport. Here, we systematically investigate the influence of Stille polymerization conditions on the molar mass, optoelectronic properties, morphology, and device performance of the benchmark donor polymer D18. By varying reaction time, catalyst type, and catalyst loading, we access D18 batches with weight-average molar masses (M w) ranging from approximately 12 to 93 kg·mol-1. Gel permeation chromatography,

Stereoelectronic and hydrogen-bonding effects on hydroxyproline conformation.

Collagen's structural integrity and biological function derive from its characteristic triple helix, governed by a unique amino acid sequence containing the rare residue (2S,4R)-hydroxyproline (4R-Hyp). Substituting 4R-Hyp with its diastereomer 4S-Hyp markedly reduces triple-helix thermal stability and impairs collagen function. The origins of this destabilization have mostly been ascribed to stereoelectronic effects such as the gauche effect and n → π* interactions. Here, we dissect the role of different stabilizing interactions on molecular conformation using linear infrared and two-dimensio

Probing the Solution Structure of Amphiphilic Polymer Flower-Micelles Using Fluorescence and Hyper-Rayleigh Scattering Methods.

Flower micelles are self-assembled structures formed when certain amphiphilic polymer architectures are dissolved in water; they typically carry a core formed by the hydrophobic segments and a shell containing loops of the hydrophilic backbone segments. First, a periodically grafted amphiphilic polymer (PGAP) carrying long PEG2000 segments in the backbone and pendant eicosyl (C20) segments located at periodic intervals, along with a small fraction (∼10%) of pendant clickable propargyl units was prepared. This served as the parent scaffold to covalently install fluorescence probes, namely, N,N-

Cyclicurilarenes: Hybridizing Bambusurils with Macrocyclic Arenes.

Our cyclicurilarene receptor family has been extended by coupling of 2,4-dimethylglycoluril with bis(bromomethyl)-substituted dimethoxybenzene through nucleophilic substitution, yielding macrocycles with conformational flexibility that can adapt to different-sized substrates, resembling bambusurils. Anti/syn-configurations of the two glycoluril units in "Ding"-shaped cyclicurilarenes induce distinct acetonitrile positions in the solid state, and inward-oriented glycoluril forms intracavity hydrogen bonds with alanine derivative in chloroform. Four- and six-membered cyclicurilarenes featuring a

Further Spectroscopic Study of Solution Crystallization of a Biodegradable Polyester.

The growing interest in high-purity bioplastics for emerging specialized applications motivated us to investigate the crystallization of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHx) from a chloroform solution using advanced spectroscopic techniques. Previous study of the carbonyl stretching region of time-dependent attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) spectra had revealed that solution crystallization process of PHBHx involving distinct intermediate species was markedly different from the more traditional melt crystallization. IR study of PHBHx solution crystallization is now

Platinum(II)-Catalyzed Cyclopropanation of Vinyl Arenes and 1,3-Aryl Dienes Employing Aryl Diazirines as Carbene Precursors.

PtCl2(NCC6F5)2 catalyzes the reaction of electron-rich vinyl arenes with aryl diazirines in chloroform at 45 °C for 12 h to form 1,2-diarylcyclopropanes in >75% yield with cis/trans selectivity ranging from 3.0 to 10:1. The method is similarly applicable to the cyclopropanation of 1-aryl-1,3-butadienes, albeit with diminished diastereoselectivity (cis/trans = 0.5-2.6). Kinetic and deuterium-labeling experiments, in situ analysis of platinum coordination complexes, and DFT calculations support a mechanism for diazirine to alkene carbene transfer initiated by ligand displacement of a platinum(II

New insights into the interplay between chain elongation and homoacetogenesis in microbial electrosynthesis: Chloroform-enhanced medium-chain carboxylate production.

Microbial electrosynthesis (MES)-assisted chain elongation (CE) is a promising strategy for sustainable medium-chain carboxylic acid (MCCA) production from waste streams. However, MES induces inevitable H2 evolution, and the understudied interaction between H2-driven homoacetogenesis and CE creates a critical knowledge gap. To resolve this metabolic conflict, chloroform (CHCl3) at 0.0075%-0.045% was used to inhibit homoacetogenesis, with systematic investigations on carbon flux distribution, functional microbial communities, and key metabolic pathways. Results showed 0.03% CHCl3 optimized MCCA

One- and Two-Dimensional Polymorphism in a Hydrogen-Bonding Bis-Ureido-Squaramide.

We report on a newly designed bis-ureido-squaramide (USq) (1) monomeric unit, capable to tune its conformation and regulate its self-assembly behavior in solution and in solid state, forming one- (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) assemblies. In chloroform, the bis-USq 1 exists as a folded monomeric form (MonF), stabilized by six intramolecular hydrogen bonds, and polymerizes by increasing concentration and decreasing the temperature. Microscopic observations, supported by theoretical calculations, revealed that 1 does not assemble into the expected main-chain polymers, and instead, a supramolecula
