Orientation Enhancement in Donor-Acceptor π-Conjugated Polymer Thin Films by a Cooled High-Speed Bar-Coating Method.

π-Conjugated polymers are promising materials for next-generation flexible and lightweight electronics owing to their solution processability and excellent charge transport properties, where molecular orientation is critical for efficient charge transport. However, maintaining high molecular orientation at high coating speeds required for industrial production remains challenging, particularly when using volatile, low-boiling-point solvents. In this study, we employed a cooled, high-speed bar-coating method at 50 mm s-1 to fabricate highly oriented films of poly{2,2'-[(2,5-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-

Solar-Driven Photocatalytic Trichloroethylene Mineralization with High CO2 Selectivity.

Sunlight-driven photocatalytic oxidation, using ambient air as the oxidant, offers a sustainable route for removing chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as trichloroethylene (TCE). Yet, practical implementation is hindered by low reaction rates and undesirable product selectivity. Here, we present a material design strategy that overcomes both challenges. Size-controlled anatase TiO2 nanocrystals with truncated bipyramid (nanoTBP) morphology achieve exceptional photocatalytic activity for TCE degradation, comparable to rates reported for energy-intensive thermal catalysis, with u

Enhanced trichloroethylene degradation in groundwater: synergistic activation of persulfate by multivalent iron materials coupled with activated carbon.

This study investigates the synergistic activation of persulfate (PS) by multivalent iron-based materials (ZVI, FeS, and FeS2) in the presence of activated carbon (AC) for the efficient degradation of trichloroethylene (TCE). The incorporation of AC markedly accelerated TCE oxidation by enriching contaminants within its microenvironment and promoting reactive species (ROS) generation. The optimal PS/iron/TCE molar ratios with 0.5 g L-1 AC were 20/10/3 for the PS/ZVI/TCE system and 20/60/3 for both PS/FeS/TCE and PS/FeS2/TCE systems. Scavenging and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analyses

Enhancement of Mitochondria-Associated Membranes via GSK3β Activation: A Key Contributor to Trichloroethylene-Induced Renal Damage.

Occupational medicament-like dermatitis induced by trichloroethylene (TCE) is often linked to considerable renal impairment. However, the mechanisms underlying the renal damage remain poorly understood. The present study sought to elucidate the role of GSK3β in enhancing mitochondrial endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane tethering and calcium (Ca²⁺) exchange in the context of TCE sensitization-induced renal injury. Our results showed that GSK3β was localized within renal tubular epithelial cells and interacted with the IP3R1 calcium (Ca2+) channel complex at mitochondria-associated membranes (M

Spatial distribution characteristics and health risk assessment of key organic pollutants in chlor-alkali and pesticide industries: a case study.

As the issue of soil organic pollution left behind by the relocation of traditional chemical enterprises has garnered increasing attention, this study took a decommissioned chlor-alkali-pesticide composite site in Hefei as an example. Soil samples were systematically collected through a grid-based sampling approach to analyze the spatial distribution and vertical migration characteristics of key pollutants such as benzene, trichloroethylene, formaldehyde, and hexachlorocyclohexane (α-HCH). The results revealed that the distribution of pollutants closely corresponded to the historical productio

Modulating Surface Architecture of Sulfidated Nanoscale Zerovalent Iron for Synergistic Enhancement of Dechlorination Reactivity, Electron Selectivity, and Colloid Stability.

Sulfidated nanoscale zerovalent iron (S-nZVI) has shown great promise in the remediation of chlorinated solvents-impacted groundwater, yet its performance is hindered by the trade-off between electron selectivity and colloidal stability. Here, we resolve this dilemma with a simple solution, that is, using cyclodextrin (CD) as a template in S-nZVI synthesis to regulate the surface architecture. The CD-modified S-nZVI (CD-S-nZVI) prepared using sodium sulfide as the sulfur precursor exhibits high electron selectivity toward the dechlorination of trichloroethylene (TCE), a legacy groundwater cont

Dynamic sulfidation process of nanoscale zero-valent iron induced by sulfate-reducing bacteria and its effect on the reductive dechlorination of trichloroethylene.

Chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons (CAHs), particularly trichloroethylene (TCE), are pervasive groundwater contaminants with severe environmental risks, necessitating efficient remediation technologies. While the composite system of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) and non-dechlorinating bacteria, such as sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), exhibits synergistic capabilities for remediating TCE, the underlying dynamic processes remain elusive. Specifically, the SRB-driven biogenetic sulfidation of nZVI, along with the subsequent evolution of sulfidation products and their impacts on TCE degradati

Regulating atomic hydrogen stabilization enables selective hydrodechlorination of trichloroethylene to ethylene.

Reductive remediation of trichloroethylene (TCE) is often limited by low utilization of interfacial atomic hydrogen (H*) and poor pathway control in complex groundwater matrices. Here, a noble-metal-free Fe(OH)2/nitrogen-doped graphene (Fe(OH)2/NG) composite is developed to regulate H* generated in-situ via the Schikorr reaction and thereby steer TCE transformation pathways. By stabilizing and buffering the in-situ generated H*, the reaction network of TCE is effectively shifted from an acetylene-dominated route to an ethylene-dominated hydrodechlorination network, with ethylene formed predomi

Characterization of multiple trichloroethene, cis-dichloroethene and 1,1-dichloroethene degrading propanotrophic communities.

Aerobic cometabolism offers a viable strategy for the remediation of chlorinated solvent plumes at oxic sites where anaerobic approaches are limited. Here, propane-enriched mixed cultures (derived from agricultural soils and an impacted site sediment) which previously degraded 1,4-dioxane, were evaluated for their capacity to also degrade trichloroethene (TCE), cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cDCE), and 1,1-dichloroethene (1,1-DCE) over successive transfers. Sustained biodegradation of TCE and cDCE was observed across multiple enrichments and cultures enriched on one compound generally degraded the ot

Micro-nano biochar interfaces promote adsorption-reduction coupling to accelerate bioelectrodechlorination in groundwater.

Chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons (CAHs), such as trichloroethylene (TCE), are frequently detected high-toxicity contaminants in groundwater. Bioelectrodechlorination provides a sustainable alternative for CAHs remediation, but its practical application is hindered by limited interfacial reactivity due to low CAHs bioavailability and inefficient electron supply. Herein, we propose the construction of biochar-based functional electrodes featuring micro-nano interfacial architectures with hierarchical porosity, excellent biocompatibility, and enhanced interfacial extracellular electron transfer

Microbial ecological governance of 1,4-dioxane biodegradation under staged nutrient stimulation.

Biostimulation through nutrient amendment is a widely used in situ groundwater remediation strategy, yet how nutrient dose and sequence govern microbial community assembly and long-term biodegradation performance remains poorly understood. This study investigated the microbial ecological mechanisms underlying staged ammonium stimulation for 1,4-dioxane biodegradation in the presence of chlorinated solvent co-contaminants (trichloroethylene, 1,1-dichloroethylene, and vinyl chloride). Three treatment trains were compared in soil-groundwater microcosms over 45 days: a low-high-none nutrient seque

GRADE concept article: Evaluating risk of bias in a body of evidence from studies of environmental and other exposures.

INTRODUCTION: Evaluating the impact of bias in observational epidemiology studies is critical to systematic reviews in public health (as is the case with any study type). However, researchers have expressed concern that useful epidemiological data may not receive full consideration in some reviews due to overemphasizing potential for bias without critical assessment of its impact. This concern should be balanced against the need to appropriately assess the degree of bias in observational studies to accurately characterize their validity and reach appropriate conclusions. OBJECTIVE: In this pa

mTORC1-mediated inhibition of AMBRA1/PINK1/Parkin-dependent mitophagy contributes to renal podocyte injury in trichloroethylene-sensitized mice.

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is extensively utilized within industrial settings. Certain individuals with occupational exposure may develop occupational medicamentosa-like dermatitis due to trichloroethylene (OMDT), with renal injury being a predominant clinical manifestation among OMDT patients. Prior research has demonstrated that TCE-sensitized mice exhibit glomerular podocyte damage and activation of the mTOR signaling pathway, although the precise mechanisms remain unclear. In the present study, we employed Rapamycin, an mTORC1 inhibitor, to intervene in a TCE-sensitized mouse model. This was

A superhydrophobic nZVI/Chitin/PDMS porous composite for removal of trichloroethylene and nitrobenzene from groundwater.

Aiming to improve the affinity between nano-zero-valent iron (nZVI) and hydrophobic organic contaminants and avoid its unexpected corrosion in water, a superhydrophobic nZVI porous composite was fabricated in the present study. This composite was prepared using a chitin nanofiber/polydimethylsiloxane matrix via an emulsion-template method, and systematic optimization of the emulsion composition, the nZVI loading strategy and content was conducted. The optimized composite nZVI(PSE)@ChP achieved homogeneous superhydrophobicity (water contact angle as high as 155.9°), robust mechanical resilience

Waterjet Injection Technology to Enhance Bioremediation of Chlorinated Solvents Contamination.

This 2-year pilot-scale study aimed to remediate chlorinated volatile organic compounds (cVOCs) in a low-permeability aquifer, with trichloroethylene (TCE) and 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) as the target contaminants. To overcome the limitations of conventional amendment delivery methods, a high-pressure waterjet injection technique was applied to create fine circular slots within the aquifer, enabling the directional delivery of electron donor substrates and improving their distribution in low-permeability zones. The efficiency of substrate transport and reaction was evaluated using time-lapse

Evaluation of enhanced trichloroethylene and perchloroethylene adsorption in simulated groundwater utilizing modified walnut shell biochars.

Sustainable and cost-efficient adsorbents are crucial in environmental remediation, with biochar emerging as a promising material for such applications. This study evaluates the enhanced adsorption of trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE) from simulated groundwater representing the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Savannah River Site (SRS) using modified walnut shell biochars. Alkali intercalation and acid exfoliation (ICE) were applied to the 'native' walnut biochar to improve surface area and pore structure, enhancing its adsorption performance. Biochars were characterized usi
