The YFF sperm assay, which is a quantification of the incidence of sperm with two fluorescent bodies (YFF = two fluorescent bodies), was performed to measure Y chromosomal nondisjunction. The incidence of venous thrombosis diagnosed with the 125I-fibrinogen uptake test was investigated in a prospective, randomized, double-blind study with the patient serving as his own control, using an ionic contrast medium (methylglucamine iothalamate 280) in one leg and a nonionic medium (metrizamide) in the other. The incidence of thrombosis was significantly lower with metrizamide (7%) than with methylglucamine iothalamate (28.6%). The authors conclude that metrizamide is the contrast medium of choice for phlebography.

Several unknown halogenated compounds were detected in Niagara River fish using a method similar to the AOAC multiresidue method for chlorinated pesticides in high-moisture foods. A recently developed 1-day screening procedure for angiotensinogenic ("high-renin") hypertension is based on (A) a fall in blood pressure in response to intravenous infusion of the angiotensin antagonist, saralasin (P-113), and (B) peripheral venous renin assays by radioimmunoassay, in a sodium-depleted state. Subcellular fractions were prepared from the epidermis of guinea pigs which had been painted with 1-chloro-2,4 dinitrobenzene 14 h previously. The microsomal fraction showed less activity than other fractions in the MIF test. Similarly, the microsomal fraction from the dermis of skin irritated with croton oil before DNCB painting was relatively inactive. However, the microsomal fractions from the epidermis and more especially from the dermis of skin painted with DNCB while undergoing allergic contact dermatitis from pentadecylcatechol showed significant MIF activities.

Two case reports, one a vaginal delivery, the other a Caesarean Section, have been presented to demonstrate the rationale of employing a chloroprocaine-bupivacaine sequence for extradural analgesia in obstetrics. Use of chloroprocaine for initiation and bupivacaine for maintenance of the block offers at least three advantages: (1) onset of pain relief is prompt while duration is prolonged; (2) more than one "test" dose of chloroprocaine may be employed with safety in rapid succession; (3) two drugs with different metabolic patterns are used, each in reduced amount.
