Amended safety assessment of Sesamum indicum (sesame) seed oil, hydrogenated sesame seed oil, Sesamum indicum (sesame) oil unsaponifiables, and sodium sesameseedate.

Sesamum indicum (sesame) seed oil and related cosmetic ingredients are derived from Sesamum indicum. Sesamum indicum (sesame) seed oil, sesamum indicum (sesame) oil unsaponifiables, and hydrogenated sesame seed oil function as conditioning agents. Sodium sesameseedate functions as a cleansing agent, emulsifying agent, and a nonaqueous viscosity increasing agent. These ingredients are neither skin irritants, sensitizers, teratogens, nor carcinogens at exposures that would result from cosmetic use. Both animal and human data relevant to the cosmetic use of these ingredients were reviewed. The CI

Triclosan: a critical review of the experimental data and development of margins of safety for consumer products.

Triclosan (2,4,4'-trichloro-2'-hydroxy-diphenyl ether) is an antibacterial compound that has been used in consumer products for about 40 years. The tolerability and safety of triclosan has been evaluated in human volunteers with little indication of toxicity or sensitization. Although information in humans from chronic usage of personal care products is not available, triclosan has been extensively studied in laboratory animals. When evaluated in chronic oncogenicity studies in mice, rats, and hamsters, treatment-related tumors were found only in the liver of male and female mice. Application

Efficacy of skin wash on dermal absorption: an in vitro study on four model compounds of varying solubility.

PURPOSE: Following dermal exposure to chemicals causing systemic toxicity, the general advice to avoid further systemic exposure is to wash the skin. The present study uses four model compounds (benzoic acid, glyphosat, caffeine, malathion) with varying size and solubility to substantiate this advice and quantify the effect of skin wash following 6 h dermal exposure on subsequent extent of skin penetration and deposition within the skin compartment. METHOD: Percutaneous penetration through human skin is studied in an in vitro model with static diffusion cells. RESULTS: The study demonstrates

NTP technical report on the toxicology and carcinogenesis studies of beta-myrcene (CAS No. 123-35-3) in F344/N rats and B6C3F1 mice (Gavage studies).

UNLABELLED: Beta-myrcene, an acyclic unsubstituted monoterpene, and the essential oils which contain it are used as intermediates in the production of terpene alcohols (geraniol, nerol, and linalool), which, in turn, serve as intermediates in the production of aroma and flavor chemicals. Thus beta-myrcene is used widely in cosmetics, soaps, and detergents and as a flavoring additive in food and beverages. Beta-myrcene is also the major constituent of hop and bay oils, which are used in the manufacture of alcoholic beverages. Beta-myrcene was nominated for study by the National Institute of Env

Skin care for preterm and term neonates.

Neonatal skin experiences a progressive adaptation to the extrauterine environment during which special care is needed. The immaturity of the epidermal barrier in the neonatal period may cause dry skin, vulnerability to trauma, rapid onset of microbial colonization and percutaneous drug toxicity. This article reviews the practical implications for hygiene, bathing practices, skin integrity, emollient use, infection control and exposure to percutaneous toxic agents in preterm and term infants.

Comparison of in vitro eye irritation potential by bovine corneal opacity and permeability (BCOP) assay to erythema scores in human eye sting test of surfactant-based formulations.

The bovine corneal opacity and permeability (BCOP) assay can be used to predict relative eye irritation potential of surfactant-based personal care formulations relative to a corporate benchmark. The human eye sting test is typically used to evaluate product claims of no tears/no stinging for children's bath products. A preliminary investigation was conducted to test a hypothesis that the BCOP assay could be used as a prediction model for relative ranking of human eye irritation responses under conditions of a standard human eye sting test to surfactant-based formulations. Scalp hair mercury concentrations in Pakistan.

The presence of mercury in the environment is widespread and persistent, but the extent of exposure of Pakistanis to mercury is virtually unknown. We collected toenail and scalp hair samples from 158 subjects (83 males and 75 females) residing in Lahore and its suburbs. We also conducted a questionnaire survey and personal interviews to obtain information on demographic factors, lifestyles, and socioeconomic factors, among others. Mercury concentration in hair samples was measured by cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (CVAAS). In addition, the concentration of selenium in the toenail an

Prediction of eye irritation potential of surfactant-based rinse-off personal care formulations by the bovine corneal opacity and permeability (BCOP) assay.

Evaluation of eye irritation potential is a routine part of product safety testing. Many companies have elected to use in vitro methods for this evaluation. We used the bovine corneal opacity and permeability (BCOP) assay for the prediction of the eye irritation potential of surfactant-based rinse-off personal care formulations in this study because of its positive performance in previous studies (1), and its potential to measure depth of injury through histological evaluation. The BCOP uses isolated corneas maintained in short-term organ culture and measures changes in opacity and epithelial

Application of the threshold of toxicological concern approach to ingredients in personal and household care products.

In the absence of chemical-specific data, the threshold of toxicological concern (TTC) provides a method to determine a conservative estimate of a chronic oral exposure below which there is a very low probability of risk. The TTC approach was originally developed to support exposures to indirect food additives and was based on linear low-dose risk estimates to assure protection in the event that the chemical was later determined to be a carcinogen. Subsequently, TTC values based on noncancer endpoints were proposed for chemicals without structural alerts for genotoxicity. The original database
