Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in wild amphibians: a call for more research.

Amphibians serve a central role in food webs and provide a link between aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Because of their dependence on water, amphibians are susceptible to legacy and emerging contaminants. We investigated mercury (Hg) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) concentrations in wild populations of two amphibian species-the green frog (Lithobates clamitans) and the American toad (Anaxyrus americanus)-which exhibit different life histories. We evaluated whether proximity to PFAS point source (State Superfund site) affected PFAS exposures in amphibians and assessed length,

A novel microfluidic multichannel electrochemical cell for multiplexed monitoring of water pollutants.

A novel microfluidic multichannel (4×) electrochemical cell (MMEC) was developed and used for multiplexed determination of compounds related to water quality. These include heavy metals (lead and mercury ions), catechol and hydrogen peroxide. No crosstalk between the channels of the MMEC was observed. This enabled the specific and independent modification of each MMEC channel with respect to the targeted analyte. Namely, the mercury ions were determined at the bare gold (Au) electrode, lead ions were determined at the Au electrode coated with a thin mercury film (MF), H2O2 was determined at th

Detection of arsenic, mercury, cadmium and lead compounds in Calliphora vicina (Diptera: Calliphoridae) larvae and their potential impact on larval development.

Heavy metal exposure represents a substantial health risk to humans and other animals, in some cases leading to death. However, detecting these metals in decaying corpses can pose a considerable challenge. In such situations, the eventual presence of necrophagous insects feeding on the remains may serve as a valuable tool for detecting and measuring these toxic substances. Nonetheless, heavy metals might affect insect development and survival rates. This study explored the effects of increasing concentrations of arsenic, mercury, cadmium and lead compounds on the survival and development rate

Numerical modeling of dissolved mercury dynamics and transformation in sea water in Minamata Bay, Japan.

Mercury pollution in Minamata Bay has remained a persistent environmental issue since the discovery of Minamata disease. In this study, hydrodynamic simulations were performed using Delft3D FLOW, and a mercury transformation model was developed with the OPEN PLCT module of the WAQ system. A precipitation-related freshwater inputs module was incorporated to capture the direct impact of precipitation on the water surface. The simulated concentrations of total dissolved mercury (THg) were generally consistent with field observations, supporting the reliability of the model. After intense rainfall

Selenomethionine mitigation of methylmercury-induced epigenetic and transcriptomic alterations in rainbow trout brain: A toxicogenomic survey.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a pervasive neurotoxicant threatening aquatic ecosystems. Selenium (Se) has been reported to protect fish against the adverse MeHg toxicity, yet molecular investigations of their interaction in the brain remain scarce. This study investigated the molecular effects of dietary MeHg and whether organic Se, in the form of selenomethionine (SeMet), could mitigate MeHg-induced change in the brain of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). A 6-month feeding trial was conducted with diets containing low basal Se (0.3 mg/kg) and no mercury (Hg), supplemented with 2 mg Hg/kg diet as

Environmentally relevant dual-sensing of mercury (II) and hydrazine via reaction-induced fluorescence switching for real-sample and on-site monitoring.

Environmental monitoring of mercury ions (Hg²⁺) and hydrazine (N₂H₄) is crucial due to their extreme toxicity and persistence. Herein, we report a newly designed dual-reactive fluorescent probe capable of selective and sensitive detection of both Hg²⁺ and N₂H₄ through distinct optical responses. The sensing mechanism involves inhibition and activation of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), and photoinduced electron transfer (PET) processes, leading to fluorescence "turn-on" at 610 nm for Hg²⁺ and 478 nm for N₂H₄. Exposure to Hg²⁺ causes d

Foliar application of inorganic fertilizers mitigates mercury and methylmercury accumulation in dryland Crops: A plant-soil-microorganism synergistic regulation.

Foliar application technology has received considerable research attention due to its potential to mitigate the accumulation of heavy metals such as cadmium and lead in crops. However, to date, there are very few inorganic foliar sprays reported to be capable of reducing mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in plants. In this study, common inorganic foliar sprays such as ZnSO4, Na2S, Na2SeO3, and MnCl2 were screened, among which ZnSO4 was confirmed to be the most effective in reducing Hg (32 %-72 %) and MeHg content (43 %-75 %) in various dryland plants (Lettuce, Chili, Maize and Bok choy). Genomic determinants across cross- and co-resistance events of the environmental resistome of Klebsiellapneumoniae.

The emergence and spread of multidrug resistance (MDR) in Klebsiella pneumoniae are significantly influenced by environmental factors; yet, little is known about the full range of resistance gene diversity in environmental settings. In the present study, we characterized the resistome and co- and cross-selection dynamics of publicly available environmental K. pneumoniae genomes. We identified metal/biocide-resistant genes (MRGs/BRGs) and antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs) in K. pneumoniae isolates. We then assessed co-resistance (occurrence of ARG-MRG/BRG pairs on the same plasmid) and cross-r

The Athabasca River regulates methylmercury burdens of waterbirds breeding downstream.

This study characterized the transport pathways and sources of mercury in downstream food webs of the Athabasca River Basin in northern Alberta, Canada. Flowing through a large boreal watershed in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region, the river drains into the ecologically-sensitive Peace-Athabasca Delta and western Lake Athabasca. Mercury stable isotope measurements on abiotic and biotic matrices were combined with spatial and temporal sampling to evaluate the importance of the Athabasca River as a conduit for mercury. Mixing model estimates derived from mercury isotopes indicated the Athabasca Riv

Tracing monomethylmercury origins in planktivorous migratory fish in the coastal East China Sea: Evidences from mercury and carbon stable isotopes.

Under strong impacts of land-sea interactions, estuarine and coastal ecosystems exhibit large spatial variations in geochemical properties and monomethylmercury (MMHg) distribution, which may induce habitat-dependent MMHg bioaccumulation to migratory fish that remains unclear. This study investigates MMHg origins in two planktivorous migratory fish with distinct habitats (anadromous Coilia nasus and oceanodromous Scomber japonicus) in the East China Sea (ECS), based on the seasonal and inter-tissue variations of stable isotopes of MMHg (especially Δ199HgMMHg) and carbon (δ13C) in fish and site

Bell-shaped response of mercury methylation to sulfate loading in urban sewer systems: Implications for source-level control.

Urban sewer systems act as incubators for mercury-methylating (hgcA) microorganisms, yet how sulfate-an abundant and variable sewage constituent-drives this process remains unclear. Here, we combined controlled bioreactor experiments, batch incubations, and genome-resolved metagenomics to demonstrate that Hg methylation potential follows a nonlinear, bell-shaped response to sulfate loading. The MeHg production rate peaked at moderate sulfate concentrations (75-150 mg/L), reaching levels 1.2-5.4 times higher than those observed under low sulfate conditions (6-30 mg/L). This enhancement arose fr

Unravelling methylmercury formation in high-altitude Tibetan thermokarst lakes.

Climate warming accelerates permafrost degradation, which not only increases greenhouse gas emission but also the conversion of permafrost-stored mercury (Hg) to the neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) - a global pollutant to humans and ecosystems. While several studies have examined Hg transformation processes in high-latitude Arctic permafrost, little is known regarding the formation and distribution of MeHg in high-altitude permafrost, particularly the thermokarst lakes on the Tibetan Plateau (so-called Earth's third pole). We conducted field investigations and show an elevated MeHg concentrati

Differential gut microbiome composition in three-spined stickleback populations with contrasting levels of mercury accumulation.

INTRODUCTION: Environmental micropollutants and other anthropogenic xenobiotics are potential drivers behind compositional shifts and functional dysregulation of gut microbial communities. Mercury and many of its compounds are highly toxic and ubiquitous environmental pollutants that pose a risk for aquatic biota and humans. Here we compared the gut microbial communities of natural three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus Linnaeus, 1758) populations in Flanders, Belgium, with contrasting muscle mercury concentrations. We hypothesized that exposure to a high mercury load selects for gut

Alkaline extraction with tetramethylammonium hydroxide for mercury determination in fish samples by CV-MIP AES as an alternative to conventional sample preparation methods.

Aquatic animals are capable of absorbing inorganic elements such as mercury (Hg) from soil, sediment and water, which is biomagnified, and due to human intake, it represents a potential risk of toxicity. Its presence is studied in foods of aquatic origin to guarantee the safe consumption of products by humans. In this work, we present the development of a method for mercury determination in fish samples by CV-MIP AES after alkaline extraction with tetramethylammonium hydroxide. Fresh fish samples and a certificate reference material of mussel tissue and dogfish liver were evaluated for extract

Rapid methylmercury demethylation in phytoplankton during algal blooms: insights from mercury isotopes and dynamic modeling.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a persistent toxic pollutant of global concern. Phytoplankton plays a pivotal role in the bioaccumulation and transformation of MeHg in aquatic ecosystems, with several algal species demonstrating the capacity for MeHg demethylation. However, the pathways and contributions of such demethylation remain poorly understood in natural ecosystems due to extremely low MeHg concentrations. By integrating compound-specific stable isotope analysis and dynamic modeling, this study traced MeHg transformation within phytoplankton in a natural lake. The results indicate that rapid gr

Methyl group donor‑resolved isotopic diagnostics reveal mechanistic diversity in UV‑driven methylation of Hg(II).

Photochemical methylation of mercury (Hg) is difficult to isolate in nature. Here we show that short-wavelength UV-C (254 nm) selectively drives aqueous Hg(II)→MeHg photomethylation in the presence of low-molecular-weight organic compounds with different methyl group (acetone, acetic acid, acetaldehyde), whereas no MeHg forms under visible/UV-A/UV-B light. Gross 4-h yields reach 59-84 % (acetone), 25-40 % (acetic acid), and 38-66 % (acetaldehyde). Coupled concentration-isotope time series resolve large odd-mass-independent fractionation (odd-MIF; Δ199Hg up to 25 ‰) with donor-specific Δ199Hg/Δ

Detoxification of tuna from mercury through l-cysteine: a speciation-based study.

Mercury (Hg) contamination in tuna, especially as methylmercury (MeHg), remains a persistent food safety concern. This study assessed the effectiveness of l-cysteine in reducing total Hg (tHg) and MeHg in canned tuna and fresh fillets. Samples were treated with a 1.2% (w/w) cysteine solution and analysed by ICP-MS for tHg and frontal chromatography ICP-MS for MeHg. Untreated canned tuna contained 0.066-0.225 mg kg-1 tHg, whereas fresh fillets reached 1.036 mg kg-1. Cysteine treatment significantly reduced Hg levels, with mean removal of 48% in canned tuna and 64% in fillets. MeHg decreased pro

Brain concentrations of flame retardants and trace elements related to habitat use and brain measures in an urban-adapted gull.

Exposure to environmental contaminants, such as halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) and trace elements, has been associated with a several health effects, including neurotoxicity. However, information on contaminant concentrations in brain tissue and factors influencing their accumulation and exposure-related effects are limited in wild birds. We quantified 45 HFRs and 16 trace elements in brain of ring-billed gulls (Larus delawarensis) breeding in a highly urbanized environment and related their concentrations to foraging habitat use and a range of coarse and fine-scale neuroanatomical measur
