Amphibian populations worldwide are declining in response to environmental threats, including contaminants, yet our ability to study sensitive populations in their exposure and response to environmental contaminants is limited by the reliability and accuracy of non-lethal sampling methods. Mercury (Hg)—a widespread contaminant—can be transformed in freshwater systems to methylmercury (MeHg), a more bioavailable and toxic form, threatening amphibians using these habitats. We refined methodology for non-lethal sampling and Hg determination across 13 amphibian species, where we demonstrate the ef

Aquatic plant decline in wetlands is globally prevalent, which can affect mercury (Hg) methylation in sediment, whereas it is yet unknown whether this process depends on the specific plant species. A short-term decomposition experiment was conducted using dominant aquatic plants in a plateau wetland to assess their effects on Hg methylation in sediment. The study revealed that the decomposition of aquatic plants differentially influences the dissolved organic matter (DOM) properties, sulfate levels, and microbial composition, as well as methylmercury (MeHg) production in sediment. A two-stage

This study presents a silver-decorated boron-carbon-nitride (Ag@BCN) nanocomposite for ultra-rapid dispersive micro-solid-phase extraction (d-µ-SPE) of Hg(II) in diverse water samples, followed by detection using cold-vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (CVAAS). The material integrates the high surface area of a mesoporous BCN support with the high selectivity of Ag nanoparticles (60-75 nm) for Hg(II) through spontaneous amalgamation, addressing the kinetic and environmental limitations of traditional organic chelating agents. The developed D-µ-SPE method reached quantitative extraction equil

Industrial sites contaminated by metallurgical activity pose a significant risk to human health and the environment. In this study, novel carbon foam materials, either by themselves (CF) or combined with goethite nanocomposites (CFGo), were tested for metal(loid) remediation in a brownfield soil (El Terronal, Spain) highly contaminated with arsenic and mercury. Their use requires preserving the soil's physicochemical and biological properties, in which microorganisms play a crucial role. We analysed changes in soil chemistry, potential contaminant interactions with the CFs, and dynamics of mic

In this work, a new thiourea-based compound, TH4, was synthesized and its structure was investigated through FTIR, 1H NMR and DFT analyses. The sensing properties of TH4 were systematically assessed against a wide range of metal ions to determine its selectivity and sensitivity. Among these, TH4 exhibited a pronounced fluorescence "turn-on" response selectively in the presence of Hg2+, indicating a strong and specific interaction. The formation of a stable TH4-Hg2+ complex was supported by Job's plot analysis, which revealed a 1:2 binding stoichiometry. The sensor demonstrated excellent sensit

Methylmercury (MeHg) is the major form of mercury (Hg) that poses risks to humans and wildlife. Dimethylmercury (DMHg) is the most toxic organic mercury compound, and it plays an important role in the cycling of MeHg in the ocean. However, there is a lack of systematic review on DMHg in the marine environments. This review was divided into six sections: (i) detection of DMHg in marine environments, (ii) distribution of DMHg in marine environments and its influencing factors, (iii) the exchange fluxes of DMHg at the sea-air interface, (iv) potential formation pathways of DMHg in the ocean, (v)

Methylmercury (MeHg) contamination can cause damage to the salivary glands, which is associated with oxidative stress and glandular dysfunction. Açaí (Euterpe oleracea Martius), a fruit rich in antioxidants, emerges as a natural alternative to mitigate the toxic effects of MeHg. This study aimed to evaluate whether clarified açaí juice exerts a protective effect on the major salivary glands of rats intoxicated with MeHg. Wistar rats were allocated into four groups: control, MeHg-exposed (0.04 mg/kg/day), açaí-supplemented (0.01 L/kg/day), and MeHg-exposed with açaí supplementation. The compoun

Mercury (Hg) is a globally distributed heavy metal with significant environmental and health implications. Along its biogeochemical cycle, Hg can transform into various chemical species, including methylmercury (MeHg), a potent neurotoxin capable of crossing biological barriers, thereby posing serious risks to the human nervous system, especially in fetuses and infants. While determination of the Hg concentration and its speciation analysis already offer valuable insights, isotopic analysis, particularly species-specific isotopic analysis, can reveal detailed information on the environmental p

As a highly toxic heavy metal, Hg²⁺ can accumulate in the human body through the food chain, causing multi-system damage, and induce the generation of peroxynitrite (ONOO⁻). The imbalance of ONOO⁻ is associated with various diseases, so it is necessary to accurately monitor both of them and the Hg²⁺-induced oxidative stress state in biological systems. Near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probes are ideal tools, but most existing probes only detect Hg²⁺ or ONOO⁻ individually, and multifunctional probes are relatively scarce. In this study, a NIR fluorescent probe DCI-2a was developed. It uses dicya

This study collected free-range eggs from contaminated regions in China, with emphasis on legacy Hg mining areas. Total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) were quantified in four egg compartments (white, yolk, shell membrane, and shell). THg concentrations ranged from 1.39 to 90.76 μg/kg wet weight (ww), and MeHg from 0.74 to 40.56 μg/kg ww. While most samples met the Chinese food safety limit (50 μg/kg ww), eggs from mining areas consistently exceeded this threshold. THg distribution followed egg white > yolk > shell membrane > shell. Hg concentrations in egg white strongly correlated wit

Mercury selenide nanoparticles (HgSeNPs) play a crucial role in mercury (Hg) detoxification in aquatic organisms, and their inclusion in classical Hg speciation studies expands the understanding of Hg biotoxicological impact. In this context, single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (spICP-MS) has emerged as a powerful tool for the detection and characterization of HgSeNPs. However, its application to solid samples, such as fish tissues, requires an efficient recovery without compromising the NP integrity. This work explores a unified extraction protocol for full Hg speciat

Mercury (Hg) is a toxic contaminant, which poses serious threats to both wildlife and humans worldwide. Although tropical oceans receive half of the world's atmospheric Hg depositions, its biomonitoring is largely overlooked in these ecosystems. This study provides a comprehensive, pantropical assessment of Hg contamination of marine ecosystems, using the sooty tern (Onychoprion fuscatus) as bioindicator. Total Hg concentrations were measured from feathers collected in 28 colonies across all tropical oceans (2003-2022), from adults (n = 564) and chicks (n = 407), to evaluate longer- and shorte

Minamata disease, officially recognized in 1956, is a well-known food poisoning event that was caused by the consumption of fish and seafood contaminated with methylmercury. Although patients with congenital Minamata disease (CMD) with severe neurological impairments after birth are widely recognized, few studies have examined the effects of prenatal methylmercury exposure among residents, which is likely at lower levels than in CMD patients. We aimed to investigate the relationship between prenatal methylmercury exposure and subsequent neurological and neurocognitive outcomes. We conducted a

This study presents an improved ethanol-mediated solvothermal method for synthesizing malic acid/urea-derived carbon dots (MUCDs) for the highly selective and sensitive detection of mercury ions (Hg2+). The detection limit was enhanced by over an order of magnitude compared to previous methods employing similar precursors, achieving a limit of detection of 88.46 nmol L-1, which meets the European Union standard for mercury discharge in industrial wastewater (250 nmol L-1). Pyrophosphate (P2O74-) has been used as a highly effective masking agent for Fe3+, substantially boosting the probe's perf

Constructed wetlands (CWs), widely utilized for watershed water treatment, have the potential to intensify the production of methylmercury (MeHg) with high risks to wildlife and humans. However, MeHg production and its controlling factors in such artificial systems remain poorly understood, particularly the impacts of human interventions like subsurface flow CW (SSFCWs) and weirs. In this study, the hotspots and controlling mechanisms of MeHg production in a typical hybrid CW consisting of SSFCW and free water surface CW (FWSCW) were investigated. Despite 65.9% total mercury (THg) removal main

Coastal estuarine wetlands are vulnerable to river overflows and tidal inputs, yet it is still unknown how they contribute to the cycle and source inputs of mercury (Hg). This study focuses on characterizing the spatial heterogeneity of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) shaped by the river-sea tidal interaction in a typical coastal wetland, Yellow River Estuary coastal wetland (YREW) in China, aiming to elucidate the Hg distribution and transport in coastal wetland and apportioning contamination sources. The results revealed a clear increasing gradient in sediment THg and MeHg conce

INTRODUCTION: Phosphatidylserine (PS) exposure on the surface of red blood cells (RBC) is a hallmark of membrane asymmetry loss and a prothrombotic signal often induced by oxidative stress and heavy metal toxicity. Mercury (Hg) is known to disrupt cellular redox balance and calcium homeostasis, leading to PS externalization and increased thrombotic risk. Natural antioxidants such as polyphenols may provide protection against these effects. The Annurca apple (Malus pumila Mill. cv. Annurca), a cultivar rich in procyanidins and phenolic compounds, has shown antioxidant and membrane-stabilizing p
