Decreases in contaminant loads and risk of adverse effects in harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) from Inner Danish waters over three decades.

We present temporal trends in juvenile harbour porpoises from Danish Waters collected during 1980-2019, and investigate effect concentrations for both juveniles and adults for a range of organochlorines (OCs), brominated flame retardants (BFRs), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), organotins and total mercury (THg). We found declining concentrations for ∑PCBs, ∑DDTs, ∑HCHs, HCB, Trans-nonachlor, ∑PBDEs, TBT and ∑BTs over the three periods 1987-1990, 1996-1999 and 2010-2019. Concentrations above effect thresholds were detected for ∑PCBs, ∑DDTs and THg. All adult males were above PCB ef

A cellulose-based fluorescence aerogel for Hg2+ monitoring and its applications in food samples: From sensitive detection to efficient adsorption.

Mercury ion (Hg2+) is a heavy metal ion that poses significant threats to food safety and human health. Herein, a cellulose acetate-based fluorescent probe PPNA-CA for the precise recognition of Hg2+ in food samples and efficient adsorption of Hg2+ in aqueous solution was rationally synthesized. PPNA-CA exhibited low emission intensity in solution, while the emission intensity was rapidly increased in the existence of Hg2+ accompanied with variation of the fluorescence color from weak yellow to bright yellow. This probe showed good sensitivity (97 nM), ultrafast response (20 s) and excellent s

Depth-stratified microbial communities drive methane cycling and mercury methylation in East Dongting Lake sediments.

16S rRNA amplicon sequencing and redundancy analysis to reveal the depth-stratified patterns of microbial communities driving methane cycling and mercury methylation in sediments of East Dongting Lake across a water depth gradient (deep: 25-35 m, middle: 15-25 m, shallow: 5-15 m). Methanogens, including Methanosaeta, were most abundant in the organic-rich middle layer (TOC: 11.56 ± 2.25 mg g⁻¹). Methylmercury concentrations were significantly higher in the middle (0.1966 ± 0.0868 μg kg⁻¹) and deep layers (0.1944 ± 0.0676 μg kg⁻¹) than in the shallow layer, even though the deep layer contained t

Mercury bioaccumulation and biomagnification in southern hemisphere riverine food webs: Environmental drivers across a 3,700 km Chilean latitudinal gradient.

Mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in freshwater food webs is a worldwide concern, commonly interpreted through broad geographic gradients derived largely from Northern Hemisphere datasets, yet controls on dynamics in Southern Hemisphere rivers remain poorly resolved. Our multi-basin, multi-matrix investigation of total mercury (THg) and MeHg across a ∼3700 km Chilean latitudinal gradient using integrated abiotic (water, sediments) and biotic (benthic macroinvertebrates, trout) matrices and stable isotopes (δ13C, δ15N), alongside environmental and land use variables. Sediment THg ranged fro

Seawater mercury species and phytoplankton biomass drive bioaccumulation in a coastal plankton food web.

Plankton plays a key role in the bioconcentration and biomagnification of mercury (Hg) in marine food webs. Few studies have investigated the driving factors in coastal plankton food webs. Total-mercury (tHg) and total methylated-mercury (MeHg) were measured in seawater, size-fractioned phytoplankton (0.7 to 60 μm), zooplankton (60 to >2000 μm) and mysids, sampled monthly between February 2020 and November 2021 in the Bay of Marseille (NW Mediterranean Sea, France). Total-Hg and MeHg concentrations varied widely in seawater (193-903, 4-39 pg L-1), phytoplankton (37-5690, 0.02-15 ng g-1DW) and

Spiders as sentinels of mercury contamination in High Arctic lentic ecosystems and risk to arachnivorous birds.

Despite their distance from major anthropogenic emission sources, Arctic food webs are contaminated with toxic methylmercury (MeHg). Due to the region's vast size and remoteness, there remains a paucity of Hg observations. Measuring bioavailable MeHg in sentinel organisms, species that accumulate contaminants without significant adverse effects, offers an efficient monitoring strategy. Spiders could be ideal sentinels because they are consistently abundant in Arctic ecosystems and are consumed by nestling songbirds, linking aquatic MeHg contamination to terrestrial consumers. This study (1) as

Temporal dynamics of mercury exposure and associated health and economic burdens in China.

Mercury is a global highly toxic pollutant linked to neurodevelopmental impairments and cardiovascular risks. However, despite being the world's largest anthropogenic mercury emitter, China has lacked systematic human biomonitoring evidence to evaluate long-term exposure and health impacts. By integrating nationwide biomonitoring datasets (extracted from 158 articles) with machine learning modeling, this study provides the first comprehensive national assessment of temporal trends in human mercury exposure and their associated health and economic burdens in China. According to the present stud

A multifunctional fluorescent probe for sequential detection of Hg2+ and nitenpyram in living cells: rational design and mechanistic insights.

The deposition of heavy metal ions and pesticides has presented a significant threat to ecological systems and human health. Consequently, the development of rapid and highly efficient detection technologies is of critical importance. In this work, a novel fluorescent probe, N'-(2-butyl-1,3-dioxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzo[de]isoquinolin-6-yl)benzo[b]thiophene-2-carbohydrazide (NDBC), was successfully designed and synthesized by incorporating naphthimide and acylhydrazine. The synthesized NDBC enables continuous detection of Hg2+ and nitenpyram based on a "turn-off-on" fluorescence signal response.

Mercury methylation network on microplastics: Multipathway coupling, regulatory mechanisms, and environmental risks.

Microplastics (MPs) have emerged as pervasive environmental contaminants and potential regulators of mercury (Hg) biogeochemistry. Beyond serving as physical carriers, MPs can reshape the physicochemical and microbial microenvironments that control Hg transformation, thereby influencing the formation of methylmercury (MeHg). MPs influence Hg methylation through multiple coupled pathways. Surface adsorption and desorption processes determine the environmental distribution and mobility of Hg species, while aging-induced changes in functional groups on MPs further regulate their interactions with

Antibiotic Pollution Elevates Microbial Methylmercury Production.

Fostering aquaculture is a promising strategy to meet the food demands of a growing population. Yet, marine aquaculture farms are situated primarily in nearshore regions that coincide with major mercury reservoirs─coastal sediments─wherein microbial methylation is most dynamic. Sustainable aquaculture calls for safe practices that minimize unintended stimulation of microbial production of neurotoxic bioaccumulative methylmercury. Here, we show that antibiotics released from aquaculture farms significantly boost methylmercury production by sulfate-reducing bacteria. Mercury methylation risk was

Rice Cultivation Reshapes Mercury Accumulation in Soil-Plant Systems.

Predicting the bioaccumulation of potent neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) in rice is essential for assessing and mitigating human exposure risks, particularly for Asians and infants. However, significant uncertainties lie in understanding and predicting MeHg accumulation in rice, partially due to the insufficient understanding of how rice plants regulate Hg biogeochemistry in soil-rice systems. Here, we conducted a pot experiment involving 32 commonly cultivated rice varieties under the same soil and ambient conditions. By analyzing MeHg contents in rice-paddy systems and amino acid profiles in

Review on mercury transformations and trophic transfer in upland forest ecosystems.

Mercury (Hg), a global pollutant of widespread concern, poses significant threats to environmental and ecological health. Upland ecosystems are critical in the global Hg cycle, serving as major long-term sinks for atmospheric Hg, largely through vegetation mediated dry deposition. Despite this importance, substantial knowledge gaps remain on the global distribution patterns of Hg, particularly its more neurotoxic organic form, methylmercury (MeHg), in upland soils and the mechanisms governing its formation and fate. This review discusses current understanding of the global spatial pattern of H

Thermal fractionation of mercury in environmental matrices: a critical review of direct analyzer techniques.

Understanding the biogeochemical transformations of mercury (Hg) and managing the associated ecological and human health risks require analytical approaches that go beyond total Hg and methylmercury (MeHg) measurements and resolve the forms that control the mobility and bioavailability of this metal. Yet no single speciation technique currently provides a routine, multi-matrix solution suitable for environmental monitoring. This review evaluates temperature-programmed thermal fractionation of Hg, implemented using direct Hg analyzers, as a pragmatic tool to bridge this gap. We summarize the th

A novel near-infrared-emitting selenolactone-cyanine chemosensor platform for ultra-trace mercury (II) detection in environmental, food and living cell samples.

A novel near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent and colorimetric probe, NIR-2, was designed and synthesized for the highly selective and sensitive quantification of Hg2+ ions in real samples. The interaction between NIR-2 and Hg2+ triggered a structural transformation from ring-closed fluorescence turn-off selenolactone structure to ring-open acid form, leading to a visible color shift and notable fluorescence enhancement. Spectroscopic techniques, including HRMS, FT-IR, and NMR, confirmed the molecular structure and interaction mechanism between the probe and Hg2+ ions. NIR-2 demonstrated outstanding

Mechanistic Insights into Mercury Photoreduction: Effects of Dissolved Organic Matter and Inorganic Carbon in Seawater.

Atmospheric mercury (Hg) is primarily derived from marine evasion of Hg(0) produced through the photoreduction of Hg(II) in seawater. Although the mechanisms of Hg(II) photoreduction in seawater have been extensively investigated, the coupled effects of dissolved inorganic carbon and specific dissolved organic matter (DOM) structures remain unresolved. Here, we report the pseudo-first-order rate constants (kr) for the gross photoreduction of Hg(II) in the presence of thiols in deionized water (DIW), phosphate buffer solution (PBS), and artificial seawater (ASW) under UV-A irradiation. For alip

Re-Evaluation of the Applicability of Terpyridine as a Highly Selective Aqueous Colorimetric Sensor for Mercury.

In a more than 100-times cited article published in Chem. Eur. J. in 2008 (reference [4]), 2,2´:6´2´´-terpyridine (tpy) has been reported to be a "highly selective colorimetric aqueous sensor for mercury." Verification of this message reveals that the key data and claims reported in the article [4] do not agree with reality. In aqueous DMSO, the reaction of HgII compounds with tpy does not produce the pink species [Hg(tpy)2]2+, but white (colorless) products with limited solubility, uncertain stoichiometry and thus structure, and zero use in colorimetry. The color and spectra assigned in the a

Manganese oxide-mediated inhibition of microplastic photodegradation: insight into the photoreduction mechanism.

Microplastics (MPs) are widely distributed in aquatic environments and undergo photodegradation. Although clays and iron (hydr)oxides are known to promote MP photodegradation, the role of manganese oxides (MnOx), one of the most abundant transition metal oxides, remains poorly understood. Here, we examined the impact of MnOx on the photodegradation of two prevalent MPs, polystyrene (PS) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), under irradiation from a 500 W mercury lamp. Results indicated that MnOx significantly inhibited the photodegradation of both PS and PVC, with their MP-derived dissolved organic ma

Conventional Chromatographic Techniques and Biosensors for Mercury Speciation in Seafood: A Systematic Review.

Mercury (Hg) is of significant concern due to its toxicity, which strongly depends on its chemical forms, and organic mercury compounds, particularly methylmercury (MeHg), are considered the most toxic species. Therefore, mercury speciation analysis is essential for accurate exposure and risk assessment. The primary dietary source of mercury exposure for humans is food consumption, particularly seafood. Consequently, numerous studies have focused on developing analytical techniques for the identification, characterization, and quantification of Hg species in seafood. This review evaluates and
