Dual-Target Fluorescent Imaging of Hg2+ and Cell Membrane Stress in Live Plants.

Monitoring mercury ion (Hg2+) accumulation and its phytotoxicity in plants requires analytical methods that provide both spatial and functional information beyond simple destructive quantification. We report HBTD-Hg, a dual-target fluorescent probe engineered to anchor to the cell membrane and exhibit a selective fluorescence turn-on response to Hg2+. This design enables simultaneous in situ imaging of Hg2+ distribution and real-time assessment of membrane integrity in live plant tissues. The probe quantifies Hg2+ with a detection limit of 49.7 nM. Importantly, it allows for the nondestructive

Peculiarities of Mercuration-Iododemercuration of Propargyl Derivatives.

The mercuration-iododemercuration reactions of some propargyl systems were explored. In the presence of mercury (II) acetate, propargyl derivatives reacted facilely with iodine. These interactions proceeded by two possible pathways included corresponding bridged and linear organomercury intermediates. Short-chain alkyl propargyl ethers under mild conditions with mercury (II) acetate in an acetic acid (hexane or dichloromethane) medium with iodine resulted in a mixture of iodoalkyloxypropynes, diiodoalkyloxypropenyl acetates, diiodoalkyloxypropenes, and triiodoalkyloxypropenes. Acetoxymercurati

Spatio-temporal dynamics of water quality during and after an extreme flood event in southern Brazil.

In April-May 2024, a compound flood event in southern Brazil produced the highest water levels ever recorded in Porto Alegre, overwhelming urban drainage, sewage, and water treatment infrastructure. This study evaluates the spatiotemporal response of raw water quality in the Guaíba system-the primary drinking-water source for 1.32 million people-during and after this unprecedented event. We conducted seven monitoring campaigns (S1-S7) over one year, from the flood peak (May 2024) to post-event conditions (April 2025), across 22 sampling sites covering six water supply systems. Physicochemical

Application of Novel Patent-Based Effervescent Tablet as a Selective Filter for Removing Hazardous Chemical Materials in Hookah Smoke: Determination and Comparison of Toxic Chemical Compounds in Hookah Smoke Versus Cigarette Smoke.

A novel patent-based effervescent tablet was developed and evaluated as a selective filter for reducing hazardous chemical compounds in hookah smoke. The study combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) to identify and quantify major toxicants. Hookah smoke was trapped using cellulose nanofiber-based solvent chambers and latex puff chambers, followed by analysis of volatile organic compounds (nicotine, propylene oxide, formaldehyde, crotonaldehyde, acrolein, acetaldehyde, 1,3-butadiene, benzopyrene, pyridine, phenol, benzene) and potentially

An Easily Synthesized Fluorescent Probe with Nanomolar Sensitive for Detection of Hg2+ via a Reaction-Based Mechanism and Its Application in Tap Water, Fish, Shrimp, Soil Samples, and Living Cells.

Mercury ion (Hg2+) is a ubiquitous heavy metal pollutant that poses health risks through its environmental transport and accumulation in living organisms. To address this, we designed and constructed a chemically reactive probe, BTS, capable of sensitively and selectively detecting Hg2+. The probe displayed excellent analytical performance, including high selectivity, a fast response time (120 s), and a low detection limit (3.9 nM). Mechanistic studies, utilizing 1H NMR titration, HPLC, and HRMS, confirmed that, upon Hg2+ binding, the dithiane group of the probe is specifically transformed int

Rice-mediated mercury exposure dominates human health risks in a legacy artisanal gold mining area of Southeastern China.

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) is a major global source of mercury (Hg) contamination; however, the exposure pathways and associated health risks in legacy mining regions remain insufficiently constrained. Here, we conducted an integrated multimedia assessment of environmental Hg contamination, human exposure pathways, and health risks in a legacy ASGM area of central Fujian Province, southeastern China, where mining activities ceased decades ago but residual Hg persists in local agroecosystems. Total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) were measured in rice grains, surface wa

A Thiophilic Hg2+-Activated Fluorescent Probe for Multiscale Bioimaging: From Living Cells and Mice to Tomato Plants.

Mercury ions (Hg2+) have been demonstrated to disrupt key physiological and biochemical processes in plants, and therefore, early detection and real-time monitoring of Hg2+ concentration dynamics in plants, particularly in crops, are of critical importance. Currently, very few reported fluorescent probes have been applied for Hg2+ detection in crops, and in-depth investigations into Hg2+ accumulation behavior in plants remain scarce. To address this gap, we developed a novel "Turn-On" Hg2+-activated molecular probe, LBR, and systematically evaluated its performance. The probe exhibited high se

Struvite precipitation from source-separated human urine: mineralogical characterization, phosphorus release kinetics, and heavy metal safety assessment.

The recovery of phosphorus from human urine via struvite precipitation has emerged as a promising strategy for sustainable nutrient management. However, limited understanding of the materials' physicochemical properties, phosphorus speciation, and potential contamination by tracing heavy metals continues to hinder their safe application. This study addresses these gaps by systematically characterizing struvite precipitated from source-separated human urine collected from dry toilet facilities and stored at ambient temperature for six months, representing a scarcely explored effluent matrix in

From Coplanarity to Coaxiality: A Linearity-Oriented Design Paradigm for Ultrahigh Ultraviolet Birefringent Inorganic Crystals.

Birefringent materials capable of manipulating and detecting polarized light are indispensable to modern optical and photonic technologies. Achieving both wide band gaps and large optical anisotropy remains inherently challenging, as these properties are often mutually constrained yet essential for device miniaturization and ultraviolet (UV) applications. Although purely inorganic crystals offer superior chemical stability and mechanical robustness, those exhibiting large birefringence are rarely realized. Herein, we report a systematic exploratory synthesis of mercury halide/pseudohalide inor

Visualizing nanoplastic-metal ion co-exposure stress with an NIR biothiol responsive fluorescent probe.

Visualizing the combined toxic effects of micro(nano)plastics and heavy metal ions remains challenging due to the lack of suitable in situ imaging tools, and current co-exposure models are often simplified by simple mixing rather than using pre-formed complexes. In this work, a near-infrared biothiol fluorescent probe was developed based on a naphthalimide scaffold with an α,β-unsaturated acetyl group as a recognition site. The probe exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity toward biothiols, and the detection limit was determined to be 0.47 μM for Cys, 0.37 μM for GSH, and 0.95 μM for Hcy, re

Synergistic toxicity of methylmercury and cadmium through NRF2 suppression and mercury retention.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a potent environmental toxicant that frequently coexists with other heavy metals, raising concerns about combined toxic effects. Increasing evidence indicates that co-exposure to multiple metals can lead to synergistic or greater-than-additive effects; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying such interactions remain poorly understood. Among the tested metals, only co-exposure with Cd markedly enhanced MeHg cytotoxicity. Here, our objective was to evaluate the impact of MeHg co-exposure on cytotoxicity of various heavy metals in HeLa cells. We used cell viability as

Global Patterns of Mercury Speciation and Biomagnification in Sharks: Ecological Drivers and Food Safety Implications.

Mercury (Hg) is a global contaminant that biomagnifies in food webs, raising concerns for food safety, fisheries exploitation, and wildlife conservation. Fish, including apex predators like sharks, are the primary source of human Hg exposure, yet species-specific speciation data remain scarce. Most studies rely on total Hg (THg) as a proxy for methylmercury (MeHg), but direct MeHg measurement is essential for accurate risk assessment due to neurotoxicity and bioavailability. This study presents a comprehensive assessment, quantifying THg-MeHg in 18 species from the Mediterranean, Indian, and A

A NIR Molecular-level Framework Tracks Mercury Ions via Fast and Real-time Determination in Real Samples and Live Cells.

Bio-degradation of mercury ions and their abnormal bioaccumulation in the human body through the food chain can cause various diseases. Therefore, we have designed and synthesized a novel near-infrared (NIR) ratiometric fluorescent probe (E)-2-(3-(3-(1,3-dithiolan-2-yl)-4-hydroxystyryl)-5,5-dimethylcyclohex-2-en-1-ylidene)malononitrile (ICM-S-OH) for detecting Hg2+. Due to the Hg2+-promoted deprotection reaction of mercaptal, ICM-S-OH showed rapid response within 3 min, accompanied by a noticeable fluorescence change from yellow emission to red emission and colour change from yellow to pink. Influence of pulp industry dregs on the physical and mechanical properties of mortar.

This study examined the constituents and evaluated the effects of incorporating a pulp industry residue (dregs) on the physical and mechanical properties of mortar. The properties of the mortar constituents were evaluated using thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray Fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and tests specified in standards NBR 16605 (2017), NBR 11579 (2013), and NM 18 (2012). The hardened mortar was evaluated through mechanical testing (NBR 7215 2019), water absorption testing (NBR 9778 2005), an

Mercury bioaccumulation patterns and toxicological risk across tissues in the Black-browed albatross (Thalassarche melanophris) from the Southwestern Atlantic.

Mercury (Hg) naturally occurs in the Earth's crust, is a toxic element and the most significant sources of contribution to the environment are metallic mining and the massive burning of biomass. Hg can be transported over long distances through both aquatic and atmospheric pathways. Once biotransformed in methylmercury (MeHg), it becomes highly toxic, accumulating and biomagnifying in food chains. In this study, we provide novel data on total Hg (THg) concentrations in six tissues of the Black-browed albatross (Thalassarche melanophris), a pelagic seabird from the Southwestern Atlantic, and an

Orange Peel-Assisted GO/rGO Blended to Functionalize Ag Nanoparticles: A Sensing Probe for Organo-Hg2+ Ions in Factual Analytes.

Heavy metals such as Hg2+, Pb2+, and Cd2+ are among the most hazardous environmental pollutants due to their high toxicity and tendency to bioaccumulate in living organisms. Mercury, particularly in the form of alkylated mercury, poses a serious public health concern owing to its accumulation in fish and other aquatic life, which subsequently enters the human food chain. There are different fish species across Asia, such as Catla, Rui, Aar, Bhetki, and Tilapia, that have been reported to bioaccumulate these toxic metals in their tissues. In this study, we present a green-synthesized nanohybrid

Blood environmental chemical exposure levels among adults with chronic kidney disease: a cross-sectional NHANES study.

BACKGROUND: The kidney plays a central role in eliminating xenobiotics, making individuals with impaired kidney function vulnerable to chemical accumulation. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between kidney function and circulating levels of blood environmental chemicals in a nationally representative sample. METHODS: Data were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (2003-2016). Among 71 058 participants, 33 673 were included after excluding children, and individuals with missing kidney function or chemical measurements. Kidney function status was asce

Decoupling of cyanotoxin and mercury bioaccumulation peaks along browning and eutrophication gradients.

Many freshwater ecosystems are increasingly altered by browning (coloured dissolved organic matter enrichment) and eutrophication (phosphorus and nitrogen enrichment). Recently, Creed et al. (2018) proposed that these stressors will differentially modify microcystins (MC, produced by cyanobacteria) and methylmercury (MeHg, methylated by bacteria) production and bioaccumulation, with MC peaking under high nutrient, low browning conditions, while MeHg peaks at higher dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations. However, this prediction remains largely untested. To explore whether environmental

Synthesis of silver nanoparticles and their attachment to a zinc oxide-iron oxide hybrid structure: analyte-mediated enhanced peroxidase-like activity for colorimetric detection.

Natural and human activities, such as mining for gold, coal-fired power stations, coal burning, and different industrial processes, have contributed to the emission of mercury into the environment. This necessitates regular monitoring of mercury in the environment. The requirement of skilled personnel, high costs, and time-consuming processes make the conventional techniques used in the detection of mercury unsuitable for routine analysis. Colorimetric methods overcome these limitations. In this study, silver nanoparticle (AgNP)-loaded ZnO/Fe3O4 (ZMN) composites (AgZMN) with peroxidase-like ac
